Johanna Konta sneaks back into the top 40 at #39.
Little movement for British men.

AndyM loses in 1st round of Cincinnati Masters to Frenchman Lucas Pouille.
The Telegraph was quite scathing about this defeat but personally I don't think in the circumstances it is that bad.
Pouille is now #17 in the world and the finak set looks tight enough.
Given that it's only Andy's 4th tournament back and the exhausting matches he had in his last event I'm not overworried.

Johanna Konta sneaks back into the top 40 at #39. Little movement for British men. Katie Boulter also up 8 to 106 after she qualified for Montreal. US Open qualifying starts on Tuesday and i'm hoping she can make the main draw. Slightly concerned about Heather's chances as she's in the women's challenger final in Vancouver tonight and that won't give her much recovery time, and it's also on the other side of America (well Canada but you know what I mean).
Dan Evans also in the Vancouver final.

Dan Evans won Vancouver with a 3 set win over Kubler ranked 99 in a match that lasted almost 3 hours, while Heather Watson lost in 3 sets to Doi a qualifier ranked 163 in almost 2 and a half hours.
Evans up 84 places to 226 with Watson up 17 to 116. Evans is a bit unfortunate not to make the US Open qualifying. If he hadn't made such a slow start to his American hard court season he might have sneaked in.
WTA New Haven today
Konta 46 beat Siegemund 146 6-2 7-5 in about 1hr 45.

Any win for Johanna Konta s welcome at this stage - I don't really knw anything about her opponent.
Djokovich is beginning to look like he is back near the top of his game.
Cincinnati has always been a good hunting ground for Federer but a 6-4 6-4 win for Djoko in the final there is pretty telling.

Also Djokovic created history by becoming the first man to win all the Masters titles.
First day of US Open qualifying today with a surprising lack of Brits in action (there is one later but its scheduled so late it will probably be near enough a Weds finish our time). 1 result already in.
Naomi Broady 155 beat 2nd seed Katie Boulter 103 (Career high) 6-4 4-6 6-1 With so many British women in the draw I had thought there may be an all-Brit match at some point. It is a shame though that the two men we have in the draw are also facing each other (Jay Clarke v Liam Broady). I thought and hoped that Boulter would win this one, hence the disappointment (and bit of a shock). Hope Naomi Broady can go on and qualify now.

Busy 48 hours.
US Open qualifying
overnight Tues
(9) Ons Jabeur 114 beat Katy Dunne 223 6-2 6-1
Weds
Liam Broady 239 (so pretty fortunate to get in) beat Jay Clarke 174 career high 6-3 6-1 Was absolutely gutted about this last night, even more disappointed than Katie Boulter's defeat the night before. I've mentioned about Clarke having top 100 potential and thinking he had a chance of qualifying here, but also I've never been convinced that Liam Broady will make the Top 100 and i'm certainly not expecting him to qualify here. I hadn't realised his ranking was so low, it was well inside the Top 200 at Wimbledon.
(11) Heather Watson 116 beat 14 year American and junior no 1 Gauff 6-4 6-1 Had Heather not won this in straight sets then questions would have been asked!
Katie Swan 179 beat Chiesa 180 3-6 6-4 6-4 Good comeback win.
overnight Weds
Harriet Dart 173 lost to Fourlis 199 6-2 7-5
Gabi Taylor 178 lost to (3) American Madison Brengle 105 6-1 6-1 A very tough draw but I thought it would be a bit closer than that.
Will mention the Thursday results (there are 4 matches, 1 of which has finished, 2 probably overnight) hopefully tomorrow. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Elsewhere in the Winston Salem event 3rd seed Kyle Edmund (who was given a wildcard presumably because he entered late) ranked 16 has won a couple of matches. Tues overnight beat Mayer ranked 41 6-3 6-3 in just under an hour and a quarter. Then yesterday evening beat Carballes Baena 89 7-5 7-5 in about an hour and a half. He plays his quarter final this evening.

Agree, it's a pity the Brits are coming up against each other but I too would have preferred to see those regarded as the "future" winning.

US Open qualifying Thu
Naomi Broady 155 lost to Garcia-Perez 154 6-4 7-6 (7-3) The positives from her first match completely wiped out with this result. She actually served for the 2nd set at 5-1..
Liam Broady 239 lost to Ignatik 208 4-6 6-2 7-6 (7-3)
Overnight Thu
Katie Swan 179 beat (17 from Japan) Nao Hibino 124 6-1 6-4 Brilliant looking result!
(11) Heather Watson 116 beat Shimizu 220 6-1 6-2
And with 2 of the 4 Brits winning that means that Katie Swan plays...Heather Watson! I actually thought if they faced each other who would I want to win and decided it was Heather. There's pressure on her to qualify here and I hoped she would qualify at the start of the week whereas I didn't think Swan would get this far. As to whether Heather is playing well enough, that remains to be seen. I wouldn't actually be surprised if Swan won. Starts around 7.30pm tonight, at least we're guaranteed a qualifier as I expected us to get at least 1 this week.
Winston-Salem QF yesterday
Johnson (US) 34 beat (3) Kyle Edmund 16 6-1 6-2 in about an hour

A reasonably comfortable win for Heather 6-4 6-2.
Continues to disappoint - she has the game to be a much higher ramked player top 30 at least but as with so many of the Brits doesn't appear to have it mentally.
Can't really see much joy against Makarova her 1st round opponent who is a former top 10 player and is somewhere around the 50s.
Tough loss for Liam Broady.
I haven't heard of any problems but Kyle Edmund is starting to show signs of inconsistency. Not so much the two recent defeats but the size of them.
A year ago she would have been in with a chance against Caroline Garcia (#6 seed) but it's hard to see anything other than defeat even if it is a match she could win playing at her best.
Dare to hope this where she could turn things around?..............................

Dare to hope this where she could turn things around?.............................. The score for Heather was actually 6-2 6-4. I'm surprised it was as comfortable as it was, expected it to be close, but maybe playing someone she knows (Swan has played Fed Cup before) may have helped? I have a feeling that if she's not top 100 by the end of next year, maybe even this year, she may become a doubles specialist. She's high enough ranked to get into the US Open doubles directly, I was surprised at Wimbledon there was such a clear difference between her singles and doubles rankings, and that's only increased since Wimbledon ended. I'm not really sure I expected her to beat anyone in the main draw given her US Open record. You can't even gauge too much from how she's played in the qualifying given that that there was a clear ranking difference between her and all her opponents.
Was there a sentence between your comment on Kyle Edmund (don't know what's happening with him) and your penultimate paragraph? Talking about Konta at the end there of course I'm not actually worried about her. Yes it is a tough draw, but I think she can thrive playing against one of the top players early on and she hasn't got any wins to defend from last year there. Also being unseeded means less pressure generally. Tbh, im looking for her ranking to improve more after the US Open, although the US Open could be massive for her if she was able to produce the upset.

There was but I can't remember what it was now.
Also deleted that I think on playing ability Heather is top 30 at least.

Can only be described as sad - Johanna Konta beaten 6-2 6-2 by Caroline Garcia in USO R1.
The least said the better.
Personally don't see her going back up the rankings much.
Today should be a good indicator of what position AndyM is in -the heat may prove to be factor.
Although he has beaten Fernando Verdasco 13 out of 14 times after his struggle through R1 and in the current circumstances I can't really see Andy winning here especially as Verdasco is seeded.
If he did manage a victory it would be a massive stride in his rehabilitation.
Edmund very worrying - claiming he is suffering from a recurring viral infection.

Murray 382 lost 7-5 2-6 6-4 6-4 to 31st seed (ranked 32) Verdasco in about 3 and a half hours Possibly a bit closer than I expected. It was 38 degrees!
Cam Norrie 67 (just off new career high reached last week) lost to Lajovic 62 (half a dozen places off career high reached in June) 6-2 2-6 6-4 6-4 in 3 hours Bit disappointing as I thought this was a winnable match. Both matches finished within minutes of each other just before midnight, think Murray's finished first.
That ends the British singles representation with Edmund, Konta and Watson all losing in R1. Hope Kyle can get over this viral infection. He could do with winning some matches before the end of the year as atm he's not going to be seeded for the Australian Open next year (when they're reverting back to 16 seeds) and so can see him losing a lot of the points he got at the AO this year.
Will post tomorrow about any doubles wins we get today. There weren't any yesterday (or any particularly notable defeats, though it was disappointing that the Skupskis lost in 2 tiebreaks.).

Doubles results
Naomi Broady and Danielle Collins (American) beat 16th seeds Kato/Ninomiya 6-3 6-4 I actually thought with the fact that Naomi had an American partner this was winnable, but an impressive win.
(4) Jamie Murray/Bruno Soares beat Pella/Ramos-Vinolas 6-2 6-3 Expected win and the score didn't surprise me either.
(16) Dom Inglot/Skugor beat Lindstedt/Ram 6-4 7-6 (11-9) Possibly a bit closer than I expected.
A couple of notable defeats.
Heather Watson and Tatjana Maria lost 6-3 6-3 to Han/Olaru - bit of a shock - and Cam Norrie/Diego Schwartzman lost to Lajovic/Tsitsipas 3-6 6-4 6-1 - very disappointing after winning the first set comfortably.

JamieM & Soares are so unpredictable - they could win the whole thing or lose in the next round.
Is Jamie playing Mixed Doubles?
Mainly positive reacion to AndyM's defeat - much as expected but disappointing in that he led 4-2 in the 1st set.
If he can get a few good matches under his belt in the next two months I'm quite hopeful for next year.

Yes, I meant to mention at the end of the post that the one doubles match today (which I think will be a late finish) is Jamie and Mattek-Sands against an American pair who I presume are wildcards. Would like to think they'll win in straight sets.

Sun Mixed Doubles Jamie Murray/Mattek-Sands (US) beat (8) Abigail Spears (US)/Juan Cabal 6-4 7-6 (7-2) Great win!
Busy day for Jamie Murray. He's just started his men's doubles 3rd round match on Grandstand and then plays his Mixed Doubles QF in the late match on Louis Armstrong. Dom Inglot also plays his mens doubles 3rd round match too.
