Speaking of tennis players whose careers look to be blighted by injury, what is happening with Laura Robson? She's had a run of bad luck since a wrist injury way back in 2014. She underwent a hip operation last July and as far as I am aware hasn't played tennis since. Her body shape has changed so much over the past few years and she no longer looks like she has an athlete's body. In fact she looks a bit thin, possibly down to not playing tennis and working out on a regular basis. Did some digging as didn't know either. She's been doing commentary work for BT Sport while she's been out and is meant to be returning in a couple of weeks.

Bumped for Wimbledon which starts today. At some point will post a summary of their press conference, but the main news this year is the roof on Court 1. Suprisingly only 2 Brits in action today, Heather Watson at 11am on Court 12, and Kyle Edmund last match on Centre Court. Also Robbie Laura Robson is out with her hip again...

Laura attempted another comeback since my last post. However, as sad as it is, I think she needs to accept that she's never going to be competing at the highest level any longer. Indeed she was playing minor tennis tournaments earlier in the year but even those are seemingly beyond what her body can comfortably cope with.

Just as she did after losing to VenusW in the Wimby semis a couple if years ago, after storming to the semis at RG a cuple of weeks ago and then losing a horror match in straight sets in which she had 3 points for the first set and the first one would have been funny if it wasn't so serious, then serving for the second set Johanna Konta's game has goe to the mixers again.
Not getting overexcited about AndyM's return yet but cautiously optimistic -seems to be pain free.

Two good results for the Brits so far today
Harriet Dart (never heard of her before) has reached R3 beating B Haddad Maia 7-6(4) 3-6 6-1 taking complete control in final set.
Dan Evans tried to do an Edmund leading the 18th seed Nikoloz Basilashvili by 6-3 6-2 5-2 lost 2 match points and a further two then being taken to a tie-break but pulled himself together to win it 7-2 and reach the 3rd round.

Speechless - absolute bummer from Konta.
Leads 4-1 40-15 and loses 7-6 6-1.

Was going to update this during the tournament with thoughts on those matches I've seen (only the first week - only seeing Today at Wimbledon this week), plus the pre tournament press conference etc,but not sure I'm ever going to get round to it now.
Thanks for the replies anyway.

I was rooting for Federer yesterday (as was most of Centre Court) and he came so close with two Championship points. However he was poor in all three tie breaks and Djokovic won through in the end.
It was quite fitting that in the year that a tie-break was introduced for the final set that the match was won on that tie-break. It's also the longest men's final in Wimbledon history at 4 hours 57 minutes.

The rules are that a set won on a tie-break is equally a set to one won 6-1 or 6-4 so Djokovic won 3 sets to 2 according to the rules. I guess you have to raise your game for tie-breaks and he did.
I'd be interested to see what would happen if, instead of having a tie-break, they would drop the second serve until the set is decided. Thus players would get just one serve and there would be more chance of a break. That would only happen after 12 games played the classic way. The final set could do the same rather than run to 12-12 first.

Happy days.
I was praying Djoko would beat the boring old fart - should have retired years ago - inflated ego.

Harsh! So did Murray and Serena win the mixed doubles? I'm thinking not as I've not seen loads of media coverage, but it could have got lost amongst the other sports?

Nope, went out in R3 to the top seeds. Wanted Federer to win and not really a fan of Djokovic either... Sadly can see Djok passing both Fed and Nadal's number of grand slam titles now.

What does everyone else think of Djokovic's ball bouncing? Watching the fifth set live and the highlights of the rest, plus his match against Kyle Edmund last year, I've noticed it seems to be worse the more pressure he's under. In the Edmund match in particular it was so frustrating, when I think he was also affected by the heat (got a feeling he wasn't wearing a cap, at least to start with anyway).

She's not having much luck at all. She seems determined to get back to playing tennis once again but her body just doesn't seem to be able to take the strain. It looks like she's got some big decisions to make in the next few months.

Andy Murray has decided not to compete in Australia because of a lingering niggle in his pelvic injury - intends to enter his next event in France in February.
I personally now can't see him coming anwhere near to his former ranking.
As for Laura Robson - she's chasing rainbows. Sadly I can't ever see her being competitive at the top of the game again.

I can't see Murray participating in the clay court season. It would be too grueling, so his next grand slam is likely to be Wimbledon assuming he's fit enough.

Was also interesting to read that the start time for the qualifying for the Australian Open was actually put back by an hour today because the air quality wasn't considered good enough.
In other news, last month 12 year old Ben Gusic-Wan became the first Brit to win the Orange Bowl since Andy Murray (he was 6th seed I think)! And he plays at Canterbury I know of a few of the kids that have played there in recent years so it's great that one of them has gone on to make a name for themselves! I'd read in the local paper that he had won a tournament earlier in the year but when I read in one of the nationals that he had won the Orange Bowl it came as a shock! Having read quotes from him and his coach he seems to have fighting spirit and tactical awareness so will be following his career with interest.

Couple of big Wimbledon announcements in the last couple of weeks.
First, there's been speculation for at least the last couple of years about long term plans to buy the golf club site and move qualifying there so that everything is on site and it seems its now happening but more extensive than I thought. 39 new courts (guess some may be practice courts) with an 8000 seat show court with a moveable roof. They want to start construction next year and completed by 2026 with qualifying moving there in 2028. Does make me keen to go to the qualifying before it leaves Roehampton as I've thought about going to the qualies for years.
And today saw an announcement that came out of nowhere. From next year there will be no rest day on the middle Sunday so play on 14 days! All because of better grass court maintenance.
