Songwriter Harry Nilsson wrote the baroque pop song after calling someone and getting a busy signal. He stayed on the line listening to the "beep, beep, beep, beep..." tone, writing the song. The busy signal became the opening notes of the song. Whilst his Aerial Ballet album cut failed to chart when released as a single. However, music critics and his peers loved it, so within a year Three Dog Night had taken a cover version into the USA top 5; a feat repeated by John Farnham in Australia. Although, I rate Aimee Mann's 1999 cover version from the Magnolia OST as the best cover version.

It's Nilsson on top with his first chart-topper, and it may well be back again for it's UK run in just over a year, still a gorgeous ballad and powerful in a great movie. Straight in at 5, it's the second-to-last track off 16 Big Hits, the first album I played to death (let's ignore Winnie The Pooh for chart purposes), Aretha Franklin's greatest track, and the definitive version of Bacharach-David's I Say A Little Prayer. Johnny Nash was the first big UK reggae star - lover's rock they'd call it in later days - even though he was American, he was also the first to get Bob Marley a hit song, and recorded in Kingston Jamaica after 11 years of releasing records, starting as a teenager. Never given credit these days, but his records were the big breakthrough in rocksteady/reggae in both the USA and the UK. Hold Me Tight is fab, and in at 12.

Big climbs for Ray Stevens, and Marvin & Tammi, all into the 20, Engelbert charts another well-known (but non-hit at the time) track in Quando Quando Quando, an Italian English-language cover, The moody Blues also grab another chart entry in Voices In the Sky, not as good as Tuesday Afternoon, but nice. Fats Domino, 50's rock legend, debuts with his version of The Beatles Lady Madonna - only fair as Paul was quoted as saying he wrote it as a pastiche-Domino tribute - Smokey gets another entry, Dean martin gets another, and Aretha gets 2 debuts the same week, this one the non-classic funk workout that was the bigger US hit. No accounting for taste.....
