61 Hey Venus – That Petrol Emotion
And like Blue Aeroplanes we have another rock band where the single version and remix were getting equal play. I think the album version is much less dated though. 16 singles in their career but never made the top 40 sadly this again was another clos ecall peaking at #49. www.youtube.com/watch?v=kI72ihBIoAo

60 Real Real Real – Jesus Jones
Jesus Jones return with a standalone single between their first and second albums and wow, they have gone so pop. I'm not sure if we will ever get another 'Info Freako' but they are still great. It reached #19 in the UK but woudl give them their 2nd top 10 hit in the US where I think radio programmers were using them as a band to play alongside EMF, as they never really got the Madchester thing there, it got to #4 there!

59 Close To Me - Closer Mix – The Cure
Really should have missed this out as we have already had this song on a past list but its a nice remix. It reached #13 on re-issue and #97 in the US.

58 Like a Daydream – Ride
Taken from their 2nd EP, Play which I would say is the weakest of their pre 'Nowhere' EPs but i guess this song is kind of a bridge from their punky sound to shoegaze. It went straight in at #32 in the UK.

57 Vision of Love – Mariah Carey
Haven't had any US pop for awhile and what a song we have. I remember the first time I heard this it put chills right through me, it was the best vocal I think I ever heard in my life. It also helped she was very beautiful. Pop Rnb is not a genre I would normally buy but I rushed out and bought this. For me she never bettered this. First of many US number ones for her and reached #9 in the UK.

56 Lover – Dan Reed Network
The polite side of 90s funk rock was led by Dan Reed, lacking the aggression and silly humour of other funk bands they were maybe a bit bland for some. At this time Dan Reed committed commercial suicide by shaving of his fantastic hair and going bald, saying he didn't want to be a teen pinup and have success on merit. As we can gather this may have given him kudos but they never really broke big remaining one hit wonders in the US. Back to the song this was a total earworm for me at the time and it still pops into my head at random moments. It reached #45 in the UK.

55 Nothing Compares 2 U – Sinéad O'Connor
Well we just had an amazing vocal performance here is another in a completely different way. At the time I did prefer her rockier songs but can't deny this is a total classic now. This was a worldwide number one topping the chart in over 20 countries. Oh just realised that her and Dan Reed have a thing in common regarding hair decisions, its all connected.

54 Velouria – Pixies
First single taken from their new album 'Bossanova' and although its good, there are much stronger tracks on the album including the second single which is still too come. This was their first UK top 40 hit though and reached #28.

53 Everything Flows – Teenage Fanclub
More indie and the debut single from Teenage Fanclub from 'A Catholic Education'. This is probably in my top 5 TF songs and was a Indie top 10. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ctYYFETItUc

52 (Can't Live Without Your) Love And Affection – Nelson
We return to the US charts again, with an AOR rock epic from the sons of Ricky Nelson. These two were certainly not scared to use their hair and looks to sell their music. This their debut single was a US number one and reached #54 here.

51 Half-Life, Remembered – Pale Saints
Back to the Indie charts and probably Pale Saints most well known song. A very underrated shoegaze band that had so many brilliant singles. My wife introduced me to this band early in 1991 so they will always have a special place in my memory. Taken from their top 40 album 'The Comforts Of Madness'

We will kick of the top 50 with the second best single by this band
50 Sensitize – That Petrol Emotion
Its just one of those songs that always made me feel happy whenever I played it. If any song they did deserved to be a top 20 hit, it was this one. Maybe if it had a better video that would have done it, we will never know. I think it should have been the first single of the album then maybe it woudl have done better than #55.

49 Love Shack - Edit – The B-52's
Its hard to look at this song with fresh eyes, I knew the B52s already but they were a bit odd and this was by far the most accessible single from them but it was absolutely everywhere this summer, really think Atlantic 252 played it 100 times a week. So yes we all got a bit annoyed by it and the cool thing is to say , i preferred 'Roam' well I do but mostly as it wasn't overplayed. It reached #2 in the UK and #3 in the US. To be fair the charts today could do with a bit of this although I think 'Shotgun' is a very similiar vibe can imagine B52s covering it.

48 Move Away Jimmy Blue – Del Amitri
Now something downbeat from Del Amitri, not the most obvious single choice from 'Waking Hours' but it is total quality so I don't care. Why this was a hit and 'Kiss This Good Goodbye' wasn't totally baffles me though, this reached #36 in the UK.

47 Crazy - Seal
The only song in my top 50 that I didn't buy at the time, I really have no idea why, as I loved it. I do have now on 7" though. Brilliant followup to 'Killer', it reached #2 in the UK and #7 in the US.

46 It Must Have Been Love – Roxette
Another staple of Atlantic 252 that was played so so much. Its a brilliant ballad but I have to be in the right mood to listen to it. It was a US number one and reached #3 in the UK.

45 Suicide Blonde – INXS
The last brilliant song from INXS which was basically 'Need You Tonight' remixed to be about Kylie. Great video as well. It reached #9 in the US and #11 in the UK.

44 Blue Sky Mine - Midnight Oil
I am realising now that I was much more into albums in 1990 as I am being very frivolous with these songs and I should be loving them. Thank goodness for this then as Midnight Oil keep up the momentum set by 'Diesel & Dust' with another brilliant political anthem. It only got to #47 in US and #66 in UK though.

43 From Out Of Nowhere – Faith No More
Heaviest single yet from Faith No More and its brilliant. FNM were one of my most played bands in 1990, 'The Real Thing' was an awesome album. It reached #23 in the Uk.

42 Groovy Train – The Farm
After so many international hits we are back to the indie pop and you cant get much more indie pop than 'Groovy Train'. It and a certain Blur song that we will see next year perfected the baggy sound. It reached #6 in the UK and after what I said this was actually a hit in the US,it got to #41!
