21 Dig for Fire – Pixies
The highlight of 'Bossanova' and one of the catchiest songs Pixies ever did. Maybe this sound can actually sell a lot of records maybe a charismatic rock band should push the big choruses and keep this grungey sound, it might work?? Sadly that band aren't The Pixies but we love them for that. It reached #62 in the Uk.

20 Kill Your Television – Ned's Atomic Dustbin
Ok story time, I bumped into my wife to be again in March 1991 by pure luck and she was dancing with her friends to this on the student union dancefloor, this made me even more sure I cant let her go. So we all pogoed onto the dancefloor and that was the real start of everything, most of those girls are still friends as well. So thankyou Neds for your infectious moshy rock music. It would never have worked the same if they had been playing something like Zoe at the time, she is still to come btw. This reached #53 in the UK. Also 'I don't know sh*t because I have never been there' became a flat catchphrase.

19 Baby, It's Tonight – Jude Cole
Sometimes a song just comes along that is somehow out of time but is a total gem of the genre it comes from. 1990 AOR was really a dying sound but this awesome single came along and reminded me why I loved it so much. Sounding like a lost track from 'Reckless' this song still gives me chills. The fact I got it for about 49p in a bargain bin just made it it all the better. It was a radio hit in the US but apart from being one of the guys behind Lifehouse not much is really know about him.

Everything from this track onwards is a bonafide classic and songs that will always remind me of 1990
18 The Only One I Know – The Charlatans
Us Stone Roses fans were very cynical about The Charlatans even their name made us worry they were just out to copy the Stone Roses but then they release a single which is every bit as good as the best of The Stone Roses, we just could not deny them their cheek. Also they are still around today, you cant say that about many of the bands on this list. Just a perfect song for its time. It reached #9 in the UK.

17 Kinky Afro – Happy Mondays
Probably my favourite of the big Happy Mondays hits, I did tend to prefer many of their deeper cuts. It really was so overplayed at the time. Thing is as soon as that intro kicks it it still stands up as an indie pop classic today. It reached #5 in the UK.

16 Right Here Right Now – Jesus Jones
It was very understated for Jesus Jones which may explain why it wasn't the huge hit it deserved to be here but in the US, the lyrics really resonated with them and gave them a US number one. Like many songs at the time it was about the Berlin wall coming down and the end of the Cold War. It reached #31 twice here. I probably play this more today than any other Jesus Jones song.

15 Perfume (Loved Up) – Paris Angels
For me in 1990 there was a few indie dance floorfillers and this was definitely one of the best. Especially in its remixed form, this New Order esque track was a total banger. There are so many different versions but this video captures the best of the dance mix and the standard version. Honestly it and two other songs to come, I had to dance to everytime they got played at Indie club nights. It peaked at #55 in the UK.

14 Groove Is In The Heart – Deee-Lite
I can not start to say how awesome this track is. A brilliant mix of funk and soul samples with a super catchy new song sang by Lady Miss Kier. Everything about it is brilliant the Bootsy Collins bits and the brilliant rap from Q-Tip. Just a perfect party dance record. Only thing stopping this being top 10 is it doesn't have a particular special memory for me and it again was played so much. A controversial number two hit which was held of number one in a draw with 'The Joker'. It reached #4 in the US.

13 Epic – Faith No More
Yes it really was an epic. For me this is the best song ever by Faith No More, it combines everything that makes them great, its heavy, its catchy and just generally awesome. Also a very memorable video with the band just generally freaking out. Their biggest hit in the US reaching #9 and it got to #25 here.

12 Obscurity Knocks – Trashcan SinatrasNow something a bit different. We haven't had much sophisto pop in 1990 but it still is very much a thing in Scotland. This brand new band from Scotland release their debut EP led by the brilliant 'Obscurity Knocks' which has echoes of the early Postcard era , Aztec Camera especially. It was s huge song on Scottish radio at the time hence why it finishes so high here. It reached #86 in the UK but did well on US radio as well. They are still going today btw. www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfsSSa-3ROw

11 Sunshine on a Rainy Day - Edit – Zoe
I see Zoe has taken a bit of a panning over at the top 10 1991 thread but this was a huge huge song for me. It was played for months on white label in indie dance clubs and it was one of those songs I was desperate to buy and for it to be a huge hit. It only managed a disappointing #53 in 1990 but like many songs in 1991 it was reissued and remixed and became the hit it deserved, it reached #4 in the UK and finished the 18th biggest song of the year.

Blur - She's So High
Its not every year that a band I will love forever comes along but it certainly seems like it right now. A new band signed to Food Records releases their debut single which is a weird Madchester shoegaze hybrid, it isn't super brilliant but it is a real statement of intent. These guys are going to be something special. Some of the ingredients are already there in the great guitar work from Graham Coxon and Damon already looks like potential pinup. It reached #48 in the UK.

An Emotional Fish - Celebrate
An another debut single this time from a rock band from Ireland. One of teh most played songs on the radio in 1990 but it just doesn't manage to break the top 40. I am guessing that times are a changing and its just a bit too 80s and they didn't make a cheap dance remix. But for me AEF are one of the best bands to come out of Ireland loved their debut album so much and this track is a perfect example of Celtic rock as fine as the best from U2. It actually was a number 10 hit in Ireland.

EMF - Unbelievable
The debut singles keep on coming and there has been very few that made the same impact as this one. Taking the sounds of the time and wrapping it almost into a boy band, 'Unbelievable' blends Jesus Jones/PWEI sampling, acid house, Madchester , rock and throws in a killer chorus. It peaked at #3 here but would go onto be massive number one in US in 1991.

***********************NUMBER 7************************Ride - Taste
I have been following this band for awhile but this third EP was when I totally got on board. Now with a more shoegaze sound and catchier songs in general, they are really looking like a band that could be huge, Mark Gardener was my guru at the time and I had my hair just like him. Also on this EP was the epic 'Dreams Burn Down' as an immense a tune as anything by My Bloody Valentine, that was not a deliberate pun hehe. the Fall EP reached #34. www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsmHP3ce010

The Railway Children - Every Beat Of The Heart
Another Manchester band who have been on the fringes of success for many years. This time in 1990 they write the song of their life a proper indie pop classic. Again it has a bit of a Joy Division feel but also the classic pop sound of bands like Deacon Blue or Aztec Camera. I loved this song so much I think I bought it twice as I was so desperate for it to be a hit on re-issue which it was reaching #24 in the UK.

Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence
Into the top 5 and things are getting serious. I have to say I wasn't actually big on this at the time I found it a bit lacklustre for them but over the years I have caught up with public opinion and its probably in my top 5 Depeche Mode songs. It was also one of the songs that confirmed their stadium status in most of the world. It was a top 10 hit all over the world reaching #6 in the Uk and #8 in the US.

The Shamen - Progen
Another massive indie dance anthem and they were probably the most played band in our flat where my flatmate had just about every 12" they released. This is the original release which still features the late Will Sinnot who tragically died soon after making this video. It is also the first time Mr C made an impact to The Shamens music, hopefully he wont take over now.... This original relaese reached #55 but the track will be re-issued as 'Move any Mountain' in 1991 and be a huge hit reaching #4 in the UK.

The Sundays - Here's Where The Story Ends
Deciding the order of this top 3 was very hard. I almost didn't include this song as it was not a UK single but since I have included Us hits before, it seemed only fair. It was only not a single due to the collapse in Rough Trade records. This is the highlight from the perfect debut album 'Reading, Writing and Arithmetic' which is one of my top 5 albums of all time. I actually feel bad making this #3 when 'can't Be Sure' was #1 but when you see the two songs left you will understand. From this beautiful shoegaze pop song to an absolute perfect example of the genre.

My Bloody Valentine - Soon/ Soon ( Andy Weatherall Remix)
Possibly the best shoegaze song ever but also one of the best indie dance club songs ever. I had more amazing times in 1990-1991 dancing to 'Soon' than just about any other song, really who needed drugs, well sometimes hehe. I just cant say how amazing both these songs are so I will just link them and let them speak for themselves. It peaked at #41 in the UK.
And here we go!! possibly the best remix ever !!
