97 Pearl Jam - Ten
I still remember the first time I heard Pearl Jam. I was listening to the top 40 and they announced a new entry by a new rock band and they were grunge and I was like 'Who the f**k are these chancers? where have they come from?'. I was not a fan at all. I knew a good bit about grunge but I had never heard of them and thought they were some record company cash in band, a bit like Bush who were still to come. Of course they weren't they had been making this music for years in other bands. It has taken a few years to appreciate 'Ten' without that bandwagon attitude and I did eventually become a fan, I could not resist 'Jeremy' at the time eventhough that was the name of my wifes ex! A grunge classic yes completely. The album reached #2 in the US and #18 in the UK and has sold over 15 million, 13 in the US alone!

96 That Petrol Emotion - Chemicrazy
Now a band who made a bit of a comeback in the early 90s. After one brilliant single in 1987, they never really followed the potential until they made this album. Maybe a case of too little to late as these sometimes baggy and other times punk influenced pop were just not quite the sound of the time. 'Hey Venus' comes the closest to finally giving them a top 40 hit but its nowhere near the best song on the record and has dated badly. The album only made a very disappointing #62 in 1990.

95 Pulp - Different Class
A mere twenty places higher than 'His N Hers' I really couldn't separate them. This is probably a better more consistent album than their previous but as I said earlier , there are too many songs that I am sick of on this record. I think Pulp are very of that time and unlike many records in this top 100, I would be very unlikely to choose to listen to the album myself without a list like this. It gave them their first number one in 1995.

94 The KLF - The White Room
Firstly I don't own this record sadly, it was my flatmates but I love it like it was my own. KLF never did things they way other pop groups did and any other band would have reissued this record with the new single mixes but not them, if they did it wasn't for many years and maybe just before it was deleted. The original album is great as a piece of music but it would have been even better if they had updated it. The album reached #3 in 1991. Luckily I bought most of the singles and have obtained a copy of this now.

93 Gomez - Bring It On
Some bands you just got from first listen. I was loved Gomez as soon as I heard '78 Stone Wobble', their quirky indie sound placed them next to acts like Beck and Eels but they were our version. The album had a lot of critical acclaim and won the Mercury Music Prize in 1998. There area coupel of tracks that are a bit too weird and annoying but in general, its total class. I always loved the folky voice of the guitarist Ben Ottewell just made them different. The album reached #11 in 1998.

92 Supergrass – In It For The Money
There is a case for saying this was their best album. They were better musicians, more experimental and generally more solid but the youthful exuberance of their debut keeps it on top this time. This more than their debut is a pure Brit Pop album with lots of 60s influences like Beat pop and psychedelia. NME's 10th best album of 1997, it reached #2 in the UK.

91 Curve - Doppleganger
Curve were an awesome band and this maybe should be higher , the one negative I always had with Curve was their production on this was a bit too muddy, maybe why Butch Vig did a better job with Garbage than Flood did with Curve. Maybe Alan Moulder should have produced himself as now he is one of the best alternative producers since leaving Curve. Also the very best of Curve didn't make the debut record and remained on EPs. But we still have a great great record with so many goth pop anthems and for a time she was the most beautiful women in rock The album reached #11 in 1992.

90 Manic Street Preachers – This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours
The Manics run of brilliant albums continues, this is another alt rock album filled with anthems and in a very similar if even more poppy way than 'Everything Must Go'. It is my most played Manics album and I know even the albums tracks of by heart, I was a bit obsessed with them. I could easily have just filled my upper chart with Manics albums but I have tried to spread them out hehe. The album gave them another UK number one in 1998.

89 Alice In Chains - Dirt
I will admit I was late to get into Alice In Chains, they were a bit too metal for me at the time but the power of MTV2 over the years made them one of my favourite rock bands ever. This album is just a total classic for me now. If you just want an hour of riffs, tunes and angst then this is the record for you. They just have such a great sound, epic band. Jerry Cantrell is probably in my top 10 rock vocalist ever. Thsi album is so good I am struggling to choose a feature song 5 brilliant singles. This grunge classic reached #6 in the US and just #42 in the UK and has sold over 5 million worldwide, thought it would be higher to be honest.

88 Goo Goo Dolls - Dizzy Up The Girl
If that was all a bit much for you, the gentler sound of post-grunge alt rock is what you need. Regarded as Goo Goo Dolls best album and their worldwide breakthrough thanks to worldwide super hit 'Iris'. An albatross round their neck as there is so much more to those guys than that one song, its not even the best ballad on this album never mind their whole catalogue. Another staple of MTV2 and VH1 these songs nearly all give me chills. Damn this should be in the top 50!! They even have a cooler image now with a kind of new romantic influence. Its not all power ballads and radio rock though as they still have that punky edge on many of the songs. The album only reached #47 in the UK but reached #15 in the US in 1998. This is their best ballad!!

87 St Etienne - Foxbase Alpha
The highest placing for St Etiienne on the list even though the lead track tops of best singles of the 90s. A great dance album and again with fun samples dotted through it. Just a special and fun record with their best two songs on it for me. They were just very inventive and unique. The album reached #34 in 1991.

86 Metallica - Metallica
The heaviest album in the list maybe but also one of the most beautiful and emotional. As you may know I have never been a metal fan as such but I like the odd band and album but this record is pretty close to perfection in its genre. From the heavy tracks like 'Enter Sandman' and 'Wherever I May Roam' through to the ballad 'Nothing Else Matters' , this is a band who know who they are and are at the height of their powers musically and lyrically. The heavy songs make you smile and the slow ones cry, what more do you want!! Wait for the stats on this one , number one in ten countries including UK & US and sold 17 million in the US alone in 1991.

85 Jesus Jones - Doubt
This was a very special album for me and it was definitely one of my most played of 1991. Yes they aren't as innovative as they were on their debut record but somehow they have become a huge pop band especially in the Us with this record, helped mostly by the theme of 'Right Here Right Now' which resonated with Americans and the rest of the world as well at the end of the Cold War. Just so many big tunes on this record and that's not just the singles. The album reached #1 in the UK and #25 in the US.

84 Eels - Beautiful Freak
A staple of MTV2 the two huge hits on this album were just so different from anything else around. Similar to Beck maybe but bleaker and more personal. I actually own more albums by Eels than any other band. I actually have them all apart from the 2018 album which makes 11 albums. The album was a big success in the UK where Eels have remained a pretty big act but in the US they only have a cult following, I guess they can be a bit depressing for radio. But anyway this album is brilliant all the way through. We will see much more of Eels if I do a 00s list. The album reached #5 in the Uk in 1996. A future Haven Factor maybe...

83 The Stone Roses - Second Coming
How do you follow up the arguably best album of the 80s or maybe all time. Well they couldn't could they but taken on its own merits, this is still a really good indie rock'n'roll record. Yes there is nothing on here that touches the very best songs on 'Whats The Story' for example but overall as a listen I still prefer it. The riffs are great, plenty songs you can dance to and even some gems that people have forgotten that really maybe should have been singles, I think 'How Do You Sleep' for example is one of the best Stone Roses songs ever, you can hear the magic in there still. Its not quite the album we wanted sadly but for me it was good enough overall. The album reached #4, not even number one !! in 1994,

82 Leftfield - Leftism
Their classic debut album, one of the best electronic records ever made. Almost every song on this was either a single or played a lot boosted by the pop crossover hit with John Lydon 'Open Up' , the rest of the album is much more laidback but perfectly constructed. If you have never got into dance music ever, check this album out it may change your mind its that good. We still have a few more dance/electronic albums to come mind you. The album reached #3 in the UK in 1995. I just cant choose a video, the singles are all so amazing!! Lets go for this as it kinda defines the album.

81 Juliana Hatfield Three - Become What You Are
Julian Hatfield back on the list, this time with a band. For some reason this album isn't on Spotify when its her best record all her other music is! I do have it on vinyl but was a pain getting it onto my Spotify. This is a brilliant alt rock album but because of her image, it was never taken as seriously as an album as maybe records from 4AD females. She was my big crush at the time and I just loved her voice and her sound which is very like Lemonheads, part time member, especially on this. It also has one of the saddest and brilliant singles ever on it, 'My Sister' which I was willing to cross over. I could listen to Juliana all day and if you listen to this you can hear her influence in bands like Wolf Alice today. Released in 1993, it did not chart

80 Oasis - (Whats The Story) Morning Glory)
Yes as mentioned those big songs just put this album ahead of 'Second Coming'. I don't really like Oasis when they sound like The Beatles normally but there are some exceptions like the brilliant 'Champagne Supernova' and I really enjoyed hearing some of these songs that I haven't heard in years like 'Shes Electric' and 'Cast No Shadow'. It is completely deserving of its classic staus but we still have another Oasis album to come. The record was a worldwide smash even in the US where it reached #4 and of course number one here in 1995. It has sold over 22 million records worldwide.

79 Filter - Title Of Record
I have always liked Industrial music but never loved it, I always wanted a band that were maybe more accessible, which are more electronic that could write anthems and that and for me were Filter. Filter someone took the sound of bands like Chemical Brothers and mixed it with industrial alt rock. I think I just loved teh voice of Richard Patrick so much and I still buy their albums today , they will have a huge presence in the 00s list. I really wish I had seen them live as I think they woudl be awesome. They even scored a top 30 hit of this record with a total MTV2 Anthem, the massive alt rock ballad 'Take a Picture'. This their 2nd album reached #30 in the US and #75 in the UK.
