HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 14th SEPTEMBER 1986

Thorn In My Side becomes the fourth Retro-Chart topper for the Eurythmics as it overtakes Don’t Leave Me This Way by the Communards.




Eurythmics edge ahead of Michael Jackson and Depeche Mode to become the act with the third highest number of chart-toppers. Sweet Dreams spent three weeks at the top in February 1983, Who’s That Girl grabbed just a week in July of that same year and There Must Be An Angel was number one for four weeks in July last year.

So, the Communards dip to number two after a fortnight at the top of the chart whilst Five Star continue their hugely successful year as Rain Or Shine rises to number three to become their fourth Top Five hit of 1986.

Run DMC, with the help of Aerosmith, move up to number four with Walk This Way, with the Human League continuing their slide down the chart as Human drops two places to number five.

This week sees the return of Cyndi Lauper as True Colors becomes the highest new entry at number 14, with The Bangles winning the award for biggest climb as Walk Like An Egyptian jumps 13 places to number 13.

It's 5 weeks on top for Human, on track to be my biggest record of 1986, and Five Star get into the top 5 with the lovely Rain Or Shine. Eurythmics get their almost obligatory top 10 in my charts, they rarely fail to make it, and Timex Social Club leap up to 10 for the first and last time with a top 10 track. Outside the top 10 things are very volatile with big drops, big climbers and loads of new entries:

Dead Or Alive continue the run of top 20's, Paul Simon leaps Al up to 13, for his highest placing in 13 years, House hits my top 20 with the Jackmaster, OMD sneak another top 20, and highest new entry at 20 is a comeback for The Monkees, or rather 2 of them with vocals from Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork, and the first Monkees tracks to chart in 6 years, but actually the first new stuff ever to make my charts - as all their previous chart-toppers were reissues of stuff I adored before I began charting in 1968. They most-recently charted with a Paul Weller/Noel Gallagher song in 2017, their best stuff since their heyday 50 years earlier. 

Big climbers into the 40 for Meatloaf, Big Country, Falco, Ultravox and The Bangles, all returning from previous hits, while the 20-year-old That'll Be The Day brings Buddy Holly back into my charts - a semi-regular event over the decades which is pretty good considering they all date from the year I was born or earlier, being as he died around my first birthday. Others extending the runs of hits: Elton John (15 years), Billy Idol (8 years), Billy Joel (11 years), Ashford & Simpson (18 years as writers). Notable newies from Black, with the gorgeous Wonderful Life, Pet Shop Boys entering relatively low with Suburbia, following on from 2 chart-toppers & a top 10 - the B side was equally as good (Paninaro) and should have been the next single instead, but in those days B sides were ineligible for my charts or else it would certainly have topped my chart.

Finally a much stronger week for new entries.

Paul Simon leads the way in them with a new song, his first hit for 6 years in my chart, the last being "Late In The Evening" which wasn't a UK hit. This one is a UK hit and not a US hit. I know Simon & Garfunkel topped my chart 3 times but have no idea how a solo Paul Simon will have got on yet. Mother & Child Reunion was just on a late playlist of mine from 1972.

Cyndi Lauper's last hit was The Goonies Are Good Enough but having seen the hits trail off she's taken a leaf out of Madonna's book and gone for a song written by Tom Kelly & Billy Steinberg, who also wrote Like A Virgin.

The next entry is surprisingly only the 3rd highest - Queen's epic "Who Wants To Live Forever" written by Brian May.

Whilst from the US, we had a solo Full Force hit earlier in the year but they're back with Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, this time a ballad, and I've listed the way it was actually credit, where they also credit Paul Anthony and Bow Legged Lou for the most number of acts credited on a hit so far, 5 different ones. (Not really different though as Cult Jam always seem to be with Lisa Lisa. Also not sure you can count Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich as 5 different acts but that also credits 5 names). Actually can anyone think of any hit that credited more than 5 different acts individually? In any case, it isn't a cover of Alison Moyet but is the same song that was later covered by Allure 112. It also contains a fantastic lyrical couplet "My body never knew such pleasure, my heart never knew such pain". Whatever you think of ballads like this I think that's a great lyric.

I didn't mention it a few weeks ago when Regina reached my chart with Baby Love either - I said it wasn't a Supremes cover but did forget Dannii Minogue later covered that song.
