HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 19th OCTOBER 1986

It’s another easy week for the Pet Shop Boys as Suburbia extends its run at the top to three weeks.




Not quite clearing the 200 points mark this week, the boys are still over 50 points clear of their nearest rivals, which this week is The Bangles, with Walk Like An Egyptian swapping places with Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors.

The Pretenders are back in the Top Five for the first time in almost three years as Don’t Get Me Wrong makes a decisive move up to number four. This is their best showing since 2000 Miles spent three weeks at the top and Christmas number one in 1983.

It’s also another welcome return to the Top Five for another act as Status Quo’s In The Army Now moves up a couple of places to land at number five. By strange coincidence their previous best was Marguerita Time, which peaked at number two in December 1983, being kept off the top spot by 2000 Miles.

Highest new entry this week is from Erasure as Sometimes bounces into the chart at number 14, the first release from their new album, expected early next year. Their new song already eclipses their previous best performance which was their 1985 debut single Who Needs Love Like That, peaking at number 15.

Biggest climb is from The Stranglers as Always The Sun rises 12 places to number 8.

Inspired by a book of photographs from the American depression, but written about Thatcher's Britain, this song is a tour-de-force in many ways.

I knew I should have posted mine quicker as I wanted to post that video.

I was waiting to play that song in Haven Factor too but never got the chance. An incredibly strong lyric, in particular the line "Though I saw it all around, never thought that I would be affected". How true that is, a lot of people think "That won't be happen to me" but then they find their own skill-set being redundant or not needed.

That it's about someone unable to find work is made clear at the end "For every job so many men, so many men no one needs".

Kate Bush's comforting words include "Don't give up, you're not the only one..". However as someone who has been out of work at times myself, the lack of pride you have when you are not working..

There will be another very strong song on the same subject next year. I'll probably get ahead in that one.

It's 2 weeks on top for Suburbia as Quo get a 4-week run at 3 stuck behind my top two acts of 1986, The Bangles get a 3rd top 10, Red Box a second and last, and Bob Geldof a first and final solo top 10 - though the Rats had loads over the previous 8 years. Highest new entry (gasp!) is Shaky with a sweet ballad, in one fell swoop beating almost all of his previous singles, bar 2 or 3, in at 13. It's a 3rd top 20 for entering Doctor & the Medics covering Abba's 1974 chart-topper with an assist from Roy Wood, his first top 20 (barring Xmas re-entries of you-know-what) for a decade.

Anita Baker's minor hit of a couple of months earlier finally starts to sell in the UK and shoots back in at 17, Sweet Love, The Mission have a huge climb into the 30, as do Duran Duran, While Cyndi Lauper finally makes the 40 with True Colors after faffing about a few weeks. Jaki Graham gets a 3rd solo top 40, in at 39, and Madness return with their final good record for 12 years, after a non-stop-run of 7 years, in at 40 with the Ghost Train. Good for Halloween of course.

Mel & Kim start-up the SAW pop factory proper, as they debut with Showin' Out at 49, Bobby G remixes and comes back with a TV theme, Paul McCartney pulls a second single off Press To Play, and Bon Jovi return with a classic bang! Livin' On A Prayer remains a widely-known anthem, selling well into the 2010's. Also back: The Housemartins, a windy Bowie (promoting cult Xmas movie, The Snowman), The Smiths Ask for a return while they are still Panic-ing, Tina Turner is Two people, Cutting Crew get a quick follow-up, and The Real Thing sneak in briefly with a song that isn't a 70's biggie.

Ok so Peter Gabriel's one totally blew me away but this is also a great song.

A huge week for new entries into the UK top 40, but no room for either that other EastEnders hit nor that weird one from Prince, and Peter Cetera's ballad duet with Amy Grant may need to wait another week if it is to chart. Also not having charted for me was that Boris Gardiner song - not a very memorable reggae song.
