5th January 1969

It's straight in at 1 for the most important record in my record collection - a Singapore-bought single, the first record I ever bought with my own money in October 1969. OK, it's a bit early, Dizzy hit in the USA before it topped the UK chart and I went ab fab on it for months - one of my friends had bought the single at RAF Swinderby, which made me envious as my pocket money certainly didn't stretch far enough for new records. When we left for Singapore, though, my dad's grandparents on his dad's side gave me and my brother a ten-shilling note each, which was a huge sum of money, to spend for the trip to Singapore. Some of it I spent on Adventure Comics 373, starring my other obsession, DC Comics' Legion Of Super-Heroes to read on the plane, some of it got changed into Singapore dollars and I bought 2 singles when we went to Changi Village evening market and I found a record stall. They didn't have the single I REALLY wanted (In The Year 2525), so I settled for 2 I loved from earlier in the year: Dizzy, and Elvis' In The Ghetto. So began my ongoing hobby of music collection!

Tommy Roe's Greatest Hits was also the first CD album I ever bought, appropriately enough, and my affection for the track has remained lifelong, including love for the heavily-sampled rhythms from it on Bassomatic's fab 1990 Fascinating Rhythm (that'll be William Orbit, then). Back in the 80's I also got to see ol' Tommy in concert, yay! Oh yes, and the much-played B side also charts. This all means The Move's Blackberry Way, which was a chart-topper for me at the time, is stuck at 2 for teen hero Roy Wood. 

Betty Everett has a smart climb into the 30, the song sounds like one that be could be covered quite nicely on The Voice and be given a bit of belated appreciation, while The Zombies' USA oldies radio staple, and non-UK-hit, Time Of The Season enters at 39. I saw the boys the other year, it was basically a Zombies/Argent/Colin Blunstone hits appreciation, still in good voice. Simon & Garfunkel's Mrs Robinson EP has 4 tracks, 2 of them have already charted, so the one that hasn't charted (pre-dating 1967) enters at 44: The Sound Of Silence, thankfully no Bachelors involved. 

Thanks to a reminder from Alex, Lee Hazelwood & Ann-Margret enter with two tracks from their single, taken from the Cowboy & The Lady album which is in my collection. I love Lee Hazelwood, best with Nancy Sinatra, but Ann-Margret is also fab, she was a fave from US TV variety shows, guesting on The Flintstones as Ann-Margrock, and films like Bye Bye Birdie: a long-forgotten musical with a great cast including Dick Van Dyke - who is on a few tracks elsewhere in the chart! Lee Hazelwood is pure poetry, evocative imagery and a soundscape to match.

Dorsey Burnette, brother of the late Johnny Burnette, enters with a Joe South song (his second on the chart), and an MOR pop ditty from female-vocal-led Peppermint Rainbow enter at 75 - from the same folk who went on to write movie songs like The Morning After for The Poseidon Adventure, and some musicals.
