HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 28th DECEMBER 1986

Madonna manages to scrape a third week at number one as Open Your Heart becomes her joint longest running chart-topper.




Just two points separated the Top Two as Alison Moyet narrowly fails to take over at the top. Is This Love has been knocking around the charts for six weeks and steadily growing its points tally. Can it manage a final push next week and provide Alison Moyet with a first solo number one single?


Genesis continue to yo-yo around the Top Five as Land of Confusion moves back up to number three.


The Housemartins can’t emulate their success on the Official Chart as Caravan of Love dips to number four.


And it’s another Top Five hit for A-Ha as Cry Wolf moves back up another couple of places.


The biggest climb this week comes from Iggy Pop as Real Wild Child jumps 18 places to number 16, but it’s a relatively quiet post-Christmas week for new entries with Gary Moore the highest placed of four new songs at number 30

Highest new entry is from Jack Your Body.  I remember there being a real buzz about this song at school, particularly with such a high new entry on the chart from a previously unknown act.  I'd always been (and still am) a follower of pure pop but this record was largely responsible for introducing me to dance music. 1987 was the year I ditched under-16 discos in favour of clubs.  Looking back, some of these clubs were quite seedy and drab but to my 15 year old eyes they were the height of glamour and sophistication!

All you lot charting Rosie Vela who isn't even in the top 75 and I know I'm ahead with some like Timbuk 3 but that's only when they reach the US chart first and that song was in the US top 20 around Christmas 1986 and then charted in the UK a couple of months into 1987.

This song hasn't aged well, but, for a few weeks, I thought the Ward Brothers would be the next big thing. Instead it was Curiosity Killed The Cat. The public got it wrong.

Still a top 25 whilst we're waiting for some actual new music to break in during the year. Well we have a trickle of it at the moment.

No space though for a boring dance track that has an interesting rhythm but no melody nor does it do anything particularly exciting.

Still, Fleetwood Mac have some new music coming out soon. I'll be looking forward to hearing it.

I go by the top 100 or the release date if i know that for UK songs. AS I did at the time as I read Record Mirror who published the whole chart and had a new release page. I chart US hits when they make the US top 40 normally.
