HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 18th JANUARY 1987

Just two points separated the Top Two this week, with Alison Moyet managing a third week at the top of the chart with Is This Love.



Robbie Nevil provided this week’s greatest challenge for the top as C’est La Vie moves to within touching distance of the number one spot.

Curiosity Killed The Cat climb to number three with Down To Earth, up five places from number eight.

The Pretenders have to settle for a second successive number two record as Hymn To Her dips to number four.

Iggy Pop and Swing Out Sister meet in the middle as they share the number five spot, with Real Wild Child down a place and Surrender up one.

There’s a huge climb of 21 places for Siouxsie and The Banshees, up to number 12 this week as This Wheel’s On Fire become their biggest hit since Dear Prudence reached number 6 in 1983.

Eric Clapton is this week’s highest new entry with Behind The Mask, in at number 15.

I only discovered Los Lobos during the summer of 1987. Their "By The Light Of The Moon" LP was released in January 1987, and entering the my chart are two tracks from that released. They formed the A-side and B-side of a non-charting single in 1988.

It's 2 weeks on top for Hot Choc as Aretha gets her highest chart position since 1971, and her highest to date, and George almost makes it his 5th chart-topper. Dead Or Alive grab yet another top 10 single, having not missed at all since Spin Me Round, and Iggy Pop gets his first ever. Siouxsie adds to her long list of top 10's over 9 years, and Steve Hurley jacks it up to 14, surprising me at how much I liked it when I thought I didn't rate it. Memory is such a fickle thing!

Lots of big climbs this week from the rush of new entries last week, and before, including UB40 into the 20, Style Council, Curiosity, Phil Lynott, Rosie Vela into the 40, while new entries from China Crisis, Heaven 17, Red Box and Stevie Winwood extends their runs of entries, but more interesting are the debuts from Georgia Satellites, and Timbuk 3, both goodies. I was clearly into a rock frame of mind when it comes to spinning singles in my bedroom, especially the Wishing Well remix which I'd not charted, having missed it when it came out, but which is fab Free at their best.
