Sad to learn that Gordon Banks, England's goalkeeper during the 1966 World Cup, has died aged 81.
He played 73 times for England, and pulled off the save that many consider the best ever recorded on film, from Pele during the 1970 World Cup. Opinions are divided as to whether Banks or Peter Shilton was the best British goalkeeper of all time.
He started his career at Chesterfield. He was at Leicester City during the World Cup win, and then joined Stoke City for the remainder of his English career, before winding down in the North American Soccer League with Fort Lauderdale Strikers.

RIP to one of the greats of football.
My second ever game I ever attended at St James Park was in May 1972 when Newcastle played Stoke. It was the last game of the season and my Auntie took me to see the game, both of us wanting to see Gordon Banks play in goal for Stoke. Sadly Gordon missed the game due to injury he'd picked up in training the day before so I never got to see him play. Ironically the last game he did play for Stoke was against Newcastle, in October 1972, when at their ground Stoke won 2-0. A few days later he suffered the car crash which ended his top flight career.

Stoke's 'keeper will wear a green jersey with no name, badge or sponsor for their match this weekend. Nice touch, reminds me of Utd and City wearing old-style kits on a Munich anniversary a few years back.
