HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 8th FEBRUARY 1987

George and Aretha get a third week at number one but with a severely depleted margin at the top of the chart. Unable yet to become the first act this year to break through the 200 weekly points barrier, they register a minor dip in points, suggesting that I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me) may have plateaued on the Retro-Chart.




After their spectacular 29 place climb last week, the Blow Monkeys are only able to move up a further place this week as It Doesn’t Have To Be This Way climbs to number two, swapping places with Pepsi and Shirlie's Heartache.

Carly Simon is back in the Top Ten for the first time in almost five years as Coming Around Again climbs to number four, beating her previous best with Why, which peaked at number 8 in 1982.

Eric Clapton remains anchored at number five with Behind The Mask but this week he gets to share it with Five Star. Stay Out Of My Life climbs eight places to become Five Star’s fifth Top Five hit in a year as they put the relative disappointment of the number 19 peak of If I Say Yes behind them.

Highest new entry is from Man 2 Man meets Man Parrish with Male Stripper, in at number 17.

Biggest climbs are from Mental As Anything with Live It Up, which leaps 13 places to break into the Top Ten at number eight, and The Damned with Gigolo, up to number 26.

I am going to feature this song as we didn't realise how ahead of its time this song was. It really was the first INXS hit before they had one here. An underrated Duran classic. The video is even like a 'Kick' video. Was this an influence on 'Kick'? I assume that album was practically made by this point but still..

Pepsi and Shirlie get the longest running number one on my chart since Into The Groove topped the chart for nine weeks in 1985.  A slow week for new entries, but a few big climbs, including this for Mandy.  I didn't hear this until it appeared on a Stock Aitken and Waterman compilation album a few years later, such a shame this wasn't a hit for her, still nice to hear even today.

It's 3 weeks on top for Aretha & George as The Blow Monkeys reach number 2 again, copying Digging Your Scene - always the Bridesmaids! - and then there are 2 classic 60's soul oldies from an advert (Percy Sledge) & a film of the same name (Ben E. King). When A man Loves A Woman had long been popular on Radio One Top 100 Singles lists, and Stand By Me had already topped my charts in 1975 for the cover by John Lennon which was almost as great as Ben's version.

Mental As Anything finally make the top 20 months after first charting, Duran Duran get a big climb for their relatively floppy single, and the camp Male Stripper exposes itself at 36, a good 20 years ahead of me getting grabbed by the first of three strippers on different occasions. I think it's my grinning not leering that makes me a target, oops! Simply Red are back and well into a long run of future success, clearly onto the Right Thing, Level 42 also return, and World Party pop back with possibly their best record, Ship Of Fools, in at 68.

It's a rap! The Beastie Boys fighting debut was bad news for Volkswagen owners across the country, including my mate who got fed up with his car badge getting nicked, and white rappers became the new thing - if one discounts Debbie Harry, Adam Ant, Billie Davies in the 60's, and any number of other music acts who'd already dabbled as opposed to making a career out of 80's urban rap. Talking of Debbie harry - she's back at 75, Iggy Pop has a second current chart entry at 73, and View From A Hill get a follow-up entry.
