In relation to previous events were we fielding weakened teams or have we declined drmatically?

Rowing receives more public money than any other sport, including cycling. Against this backdrop, 9th place in the medals table was considered a very poor performance. However, it is acknowledged that what really matters is how GB performs at the Olympics, and often we have won more medals at the Olympics than we did at the WCs the year before.

Asher-Smith's previous world class medals have come from relays - a bronze at the Rio Olympics, a silver at the 2017 London world championships, and a bronze at the 2013 world championships. Back in 2014 I remember being so excited about DAS. She'd won gold at the World Juniors with times that were even better than they looked as they were into a significant headwind. Then when I read an interview with her later that year she came across as such a down to earth girl. I'm pretty certain I posted on here in the following 12 months how she was going to be a genuine medal contender in the future, and possibly capable of winning gold, but think I was reining myself in as she could have picked up a serious injury and all that potential would have been gone. I'd never been so excited about a British sprinter, talented, down to earth and likeable, knew she was going to be special. I think injuries (and maybe her uni studies in the early days) may have held her back in the past so I'm so pleased she won the gold Got to be a strong contender to win SPOTY.

ENGLAND RUGBY TEAMRunners-up in the 2019 World Cup for the 3rd time, and a Top 4 finish for the first time in 12 years. England beat Tonga, USA and Argentina in the pool stage (points: 119-20), smashed Australia 40-16 in the Quarter Finals, and played one of their best ever games to eliminate New Zealand 19-7 in the Semi-Finals. But they were thoroughly outplayed in the Final, losing 12-32 to South Africa. Wales finished 4th, Ireland lost to New Zealand in the Q-Fs, and Scotland lost to Ireland and hosts Japan in the pool games. England's defeat in the Final does, at least, save anyone from having to decide whether or not every squad member and coach should get an MBE.

LEWIS HAMILTONOn Sunday Lewis Hamilton clinched his 6th Formula 1 World Championship, leaving him a clear second in the all-time list, one title behind Michael Schumacher. Driving the brilliant Mercedes - actually a British-built car, run by a British-based team staffed mostly by Brits - Hamilton goes from strength to strength each year, demonstrating more maturity and superior race craft as he gets older. He has become an inspiration to millions around the world, not least because of his rise to the top from ordinary roots in a sport where money and contacts still gives youngsters an enormous head start. With 2 races left in the 2019 season, Hamilton has 21% more points than his team-mate and nearest rival. He won the 2018 championship by 28%, 2017 by 15%, missed 2016 by 1%, won 2015 by 18% and 2014 by 21%, all driving for Mercedes. His first world title came in 2008, with McLaren, when he secured the single point he needed with an overtake on the last bend of the last lap of the last race. It is up for debate, because Formula 1 motor racing is very much a team sport, but Lewis Hamilton might be the best British sportsman of this century so far.
