HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 1st MARCH 1987

Mental As Anything lead the way again this week as Live It Up has a comfortable second week at number one.   With just one solo artist in the Top Ten, it’s all about the groups at the moment…



Level 42 equal their previous best as Running In The Family matches the number 2 peak of Lessons In Love.


A-Ha are back in the Top Three with Manhattan Skyline to become their biggest charting single since The Sun Always Shines On TV gave them a second number one a year ago.


It’s a similar story for Duran Duran as Skin Trade becomes their biggest hit since their last number one, A View To A Kill in 1985 and Westworld complete the Top Five as Sonic Boom Boy continues its rapid ascent of the chart.


Mel and Kim follow up their number 10 hit Showing Out with this week’s highest new entry as Respectable crashes into the chart at number 8.


Joint biggest climbers come from Erasure as It Doesn’t Have To Be climbs to number 7 and Alison Moyet as Weak In The Presence Of Beauty lands at number 16, both songs jumping 20 places.

I did chart "I Get The Sweetest Feelng" in 1987 in fact it reached #2 in my chart behind A-Ha, but as I made it at #1 in 1968 I'm not charting it again, along with all the other re-issues that I charted in the 1960s thus no "Stand By Me" or "When A Man Loves A Woman" either.

Looking back I think "Everything I Own" has to be the most surprising UK number one of 1987. It's not like Boy George was in any way still popular in March 1987 and he hadn't had a #1 with Culture Club since Karma Chameleon, and it was just an ok cover of a song that had already had a reggae cover in the 1970s get to number one.

Freddie Mercury did a lot more with his cover version and so I'd have expected his to do better, if anything.

I was also rather shocked that A-Ha, with their best song since their first two, didn't reach the top 10 for the first time, and Duran Duran failed to reach the top 20 with one of their better songs for a while.

Looking back I think "Everything I Own" has to be the most surprising UK number one of 1987. It's not like Boy George was in any way still popular in March 1987 and he hadn't had a #1 with Culture Club since Karma Chameleon, and it was just an ok cover of a song that had already had a reggae cover in the 1970s get to number one.

Freddie Mercury did a lot more with his cover version and so I'd have expected his to do better, if anything.

I was also rather shocked that A-Ha, with their best song since their first two, didn't reach the top 10 for the first time, and Duran Duran failed to reach the top 20 with one of their better songs for a while.

The charts were just full of re-issues and covers in early 1987 and Boy George was just another one, Mums in Woolies were just lapping them all up. The main reason I started my own chart was to filter out all of that. Although a few more obscure ones sneaked through.

I see 2 covers in your chart, Respect Yourself was obviously a cover version, the Kane Gang had charted with it just 3 years previously even if you didn't know the Staple Singers original. Less known as a cover version was Eric Clapton which was originally a Fleetwood Mac song. Alison Moyet's song isn't in your chart but was also lesser known as a cover version of Floy Joy.

Huey Lewis's hit was written by Bruce Hornsby but don't think he ever recorded it. I don't know if Cyndi Lauper is a Marvin Gaye cover or her own song of the same title.
