Wow what a video, 23 million views in 5 or 6 days, it takes some breaking down to understand some scenes if your not familiar with German history, firstly the black lady throughout every scene represents Germania, the personification of Germany, notice she dresses in red and gold throughout the video to represent the national flag of Germany and it jumps between points in time that define German history. There has been calls to ban the video which I find baffling, its an artistic look at history done beautifully imo, maybe watch the video first before reading my notes below on what I think each scene represents
*The first scene is the aftermaths of the Varusschlacht (Battle of the Teutoburg Forest) when Arminius (Germanic commander) destroyed 3 Roman Legions
*Germania in the wheelchair represents Germany after WW1 being crippled with her banded with a golden collar = the Wersal treaty holding the severed head of a German
*The brass knuckle boxers are from the golden 20s in Germany, Nazi's and commies
*The explosion in the background of the next shot is the Hindenburg going up in flames, the airship was intended to be designed for helium, but the United States held (and still holds) dominance over helium reserves, and enacted the Helium Control Act of 1927, preventing export to Germany so they filled it with hydrogen instead, BOOM
*The Knights are the Holy Roman Empire (the German proto state) and they are fighting each other because the German states were basically in constant conflict for a couple of centuries with each other, the golden armour she's wearing has a double-headed eagle, the sign of the Holy Roman Empire (the sort of Germany from 800-1806). The soldiers rise again after she slams the spear on the ground. She is in a way reviving them
*The monks/clerics are feasting on Germania while the peasants under her are suffering, they appear to be eating Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages off of Germania and she appears to enjoy it
*Throughout the video there are astronauts who appear to be simply scanning the whole German history which explains the red beams in each scene
*In the prison scenes Germania is dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet
*The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) is a technical triumph of the German spirit...but they were built by WW2 prisoners and dropped on London
*The concentration camp inmates being hanged had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses
*Before the Jewish person was hung Germania was blind on the right eye, then afterwards she was blind on the left eye, not sure if it is a continuity error or a very clever political message about being blind to right wing politics, now they are blind to the left?
*The scene with the car and hostage taking is theRote Armee Fraktion, a left wing communist terror group from the 1970s to the 1990s) taking Germania hostage from a time Germany suffered under leftwing terrorism
*The book burning of the Nazis and the burning of the witches by the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is loads going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis for example when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man
*Germania then gives birth to dogs, I think they are a particular German breed (Leonbergers) that nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII, so repopulation Germany with Germans?
*We then see tanks rolling in with huge statues of what I assume is Karl Marx in the background, it all kicks off, The Romans are slaughtered, the Nazi prison guards are shot in the head, their are riots which I assume is modern day and in the end Germania is dead floating through space in a coffin
I did read the line "Deutschland, Deutschland über allen" is a reference to the banned verse of the German national anthem "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles". Which I think translates to Germany above everything
