It's back! It's the return of the World Cup Qualifying thread because the draw for the first round of qualifying for Asia takes place tomorrow. Asia appears to be using the same format as 2018 with the 12 lowest ranked teams playing in the 1st knockout round, with the 6 winners joining the top 34 seeds in Round 2. If the same format is used as last time, Round 2 will consist of 8 groups of 5, with the winners plus best 4 runners-up progressing to Round 3. Round 3 would consist of 2 groups of 6 with the top 2 qualifying for the World Cup and the 3rd place teams going into the playoffs. Although they qualify for the World Cup automatically as hosts, Qatar will still be involved in Round 2 as it doubles up as Asian Cup qualifying. Seeds 1-34: (bye to 2nd round): 1. Iran 2. Japan 3. South Korea 4. Australia 5. Qatar 6. United Arab Emirates 7. Saudi Arabia 8. China 9. Iraq 10. Syria 11. Uzbekistan 12. Lebanon 13. Oman 14. Kyrgyzstan 15. Jordan 16. Vietnam 17. Palestine 18. India 19. Bahrain 20. Thailand 21. Tajikistan 22. North Korea 23. Philippines 24. Chinese Taipei 25. Turkmenistan 26. Myanmar 27. Hong Kong 28. Yemen 29. Afghanistan 30. Maldives 31. Kuwait 32. Indonesia 33. Singapore 34. Nepal Seeds 35-46 (start in 1st round): 35. Malaysia 36. Cambodia 37. Macau 38. Laos 39. Bhutan 40. Mongolia 41. Bangladesh 42. Guam 43. Brunei 44. East Timor 45. Pakistan 46. Sri Lanka

Wow. We've only just started qualification games for the 2020 European Nations competition, and already some countries can see their departure from the next World Cup on the horizon. Presumably, with Qatar playing in the tournament, it will make the requirements for qualification quite complicated ? If Qatar get knocked out in Round 2, then X happens. If Qatar qualify for Round 3, and then finish as one of the 5 best teams, then Y happens. And if Qatar qualify for Round 3, and then don't finish as one of the 5 best teams, then Z happens. Anyway, the one thing we can be sure of is that Panda will be here to explain it to all of us. As I've said before, this thread is always my default go-to site for up-to-date information, clear explanations, and a concise summary of what is happening. Thank you very much.

My understanding reagrding Qatar is it's a bit more simple than that as only Round 2 doubles as Asian Cup qualifying. So if Qatar finish in a qualifying position for Round 3, their spot goes to the next best team, depending on whether they finish 1st or 2nd in their group. In addition, there are 24 places available at the Asian Cup so teams can still have something to play for, even if they can't qualify for the World Cup.

FIFA has announced the 2022 World Cup finals will have 32 teams after scrapping plans to bring forward the expansion to 48 teams by 4 years. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/48373886It does mean we should start seeing the qualifying format for the other confederations confirmed soon, ahead of the draw on 17th July.

ASIA1st round, 1st leg: Mongolia's Norjmoogiin Tsedenbal had the honour of scoring the 2022 World Cup's first goal as he got his side's opener in their 2-0 win over Brunei. Macau's win over Sri Lanka was their first in the World Cup since 1997. Bhutan's win over Guam is something of a surprise, though Guam are much better at home and will still be favourites to progress.

ASIA1st round, 1st leg: A crushing win for this round's top seeds as they scored four goals in the first half before cruising to a 7-1 victory. East Timor's only previous World Cup wins four years ago were later annulled due to them fielding ineligible players.

ASIA1st round, 2nd leg: Bangladesh progress with a goalless draw. For the second World Cup in a row, Brunei win a leg of their 1st round tie but lose on aggregate. East Timor lost heavily again their "home" leg, which was actually played in the same stadium in Kuala Lumpur in which they lost 7-1 last week. Guam made home advantage pay once again, with Jason Cunliffe scoring a hat-trick in their 5-0 win over Bhutan. Pakistan's awful World Cup record continues, while FIFA will be forced to make a ruling on the Sri Lanka-Macau tie after Macau opted not to travel to Colombo due to security concerns, having won the 1st leg 1-0.

Apparently there will be no global qualifying draw as there has been for previous World Cups due to the varying timescales being used between the different confederations (eg, European qualifying won't begin until early 2021) so there will be a series of separate draws. The draw for the 2nd round in Asia takes place on 17th July. The teams will be drawn into 8 groups of 5. The winners plus the best 4 runners-up will go forward to Round 3. Also, CONCACAF and CAF have revealed how their qualifying system will work.
For CONCACAF, there will be two separate paths - a top-seeded round and a lower-seeded round. The top 6 seeds, determined by the June 2020 world rankings will play in the top-seeded round, consisting of the so-called "hex" group, which usually acts as the final round. The top 3 in that group will qualify for the finals. The other 29 teams will play in the lower-seeded round, consisting of 5 groups of 4 teams and 3 groups of 3. The winners will progress to a knockout stage, consisting of quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, all played over two legs. The winner of that knockout phase will face the 4th placed team from the top-seeded round, with the winners going forward to the intercontinental playoffs.
In Africa, they are reverting to the format used for the 2014 World Cup. Seeds 27-54 will play in the 1st round, which will be a knockout over two legs. The 14 winners will join the top 26 seeds in the 2nd round, where they will be split into 10 groups of 4. The 10 winners will progress to the 3rd round, which will be a two-leg knockout round with the 5 winners qualifying for the finals. The draw for the 1st round is due to be made on 27th July.

Eswatini ? !
I had to look that one up. Turns out I know it as Swaziland. I guess I should have been able to work that out.
