HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 12th APRIL 1987

Madonna gets a surprisingly comfortable second week at the top of the Retro-Chart. La Isla Bonita tops four individual charts and greatly extends its margin at number one.




Madonna’s nearest rival is Terence Trent D’Arby with If You Let Me Stay, swapping places with last week’s runner-up, U2 who dip to number three.

Starship were providing the biggest challenge for number one early on but fell away as the week progressed. They’re still able to move up to number four and could still go all the way next week.

Highest new entry is from Five Star with The Slightest Touch, entering the chart at number 21.

Biggest climb is from Bon Jovi, who are up 19 places to number 10 with Wanted Dead Or Alive. Their third single from the Slippery When Wet album has a lot to live up to as both previous singles topped the Retro-Chart.

Highest new entry is from Johnny Hates Jazz, who are now just one week away from making their Top 40 debut following their long and slow climb up the chart with Shattered Dreams.  I've always thought of them synonymously with Wet Wet Wet, I hadn't realised their chart-runs were so aligned with their debut hits, so maybe that's part of the reason. 

I always imagined that JHJ would eclipse and outlive WWW, particularly when they went on to have early success in the US.  Shows what I know.  Such a shame that there was only ever one, albeit brilliant, album from JHJ....from this original line-up anyway.

I don't know whether to trust that biography.

According to Morrissey's biography, he and Johnny Marr had worked hard to get a deal with EMI as they felt they were underachieving at Rough Trade, and Rough Trade told them they were under obligation for one more album.

Thus they had to work hard instantly on producing Strangeways Here We Come, which Morrissey himself felt was the best things they'd yet done, but Johnny Marr was simply exhausted and quit because he needed a break. He then never returned, as the band never toured the album.

With Johnny Marr having quit, EMI then came to the rest of the members and said they had an obligation to record for them, or to be more precise, Morrissey did as the others were never formally members when it came to contracts. Morrissey claims that is why he and Johnny Marr deserved to earn more than them, because all the "risk" was theirs.

Apparently the song Sheila Take A Bow was intended as a duet with Sandie Shaw, with whom Morrissey still had a close association (in spite of his autobiography, but they did according to hers) and her album Hello Angel contained a song he had written and not recorded as part of Viva Hate.

It's a first week on top, and straight in, for 1964 oldie Move Over Darling, Doris Day's classic theme to the movie of the same name, of her best and areal feel-good fave of mine as a boy, adult, and right now too. Tracey Ullman had a hit with it a few years earlier too, but Doris' original is the best and charted all over again thanks to an advert. Living In A Box rocket into the ten, along with Wet Wet Wet and Terence Trent D'Arby all getting a top 10 debut.

Crowded House enter with the top-notch classic Don't Dream It's Over, not the last time it would chart for the former NZ Split-Enz brothers, who had a few top 10's in the early 80's. Irish Rover is an old song, brought back by The Pogues - the presence of The Dubliners put me off, as they were responsible for one of the records of my childhood that used to annoy me (Seven Drunken Nights), but it's not bad and also into the 30.

Down the bottom end 60's legend Tom Jones is back with a theatrical big ballad, and three country girls join as a Trio for a cover of the 50's song To Know Him Is To Love Him. The late Warren Zevon is in with his fab Werewolves Of London, and Latin Quarter keep on being right on again with another newie.
