Stupid name, inspired by lead singer Elaine MacFarlane having the same surname as Spanky from the silent movie shorts era. Harmony groups were quite a big thing in the sixties, but I suppose that, as we had The Seekers, we didn't need Americans with cover versions.

Some really interesting stuff in here (and some pretty grim), but I have to say that as a statistically minded professional I am extremely uncomfortable with the name of the thread. I have not seen anything in here that even has any semblance of being random, it is all very carefully considered.
Linguistically, I think random is the new literally.

The Age of Chance had two distinct periods of failing to have hit singles: the first, as a kind of surf-punk act (might one say a proto-Sigue Sigue Sputnik or a less polished and British Faith No More?), spiky and fun; and the second, with a new singer, Charles Hutchinson, when there was a slightly poppier-dancier (almost gospel at times) tinge, but still a lot of aggression.
This was the first single under the new regime, the first single from their second and final major label album, "Mecca". (This remix was I think only released on the B-side of a remix 12" of a subsequent single, but is superior to the more metallic version released originally, so...)

I kept hitting random on my MTV2 playlist until I got a non top 40 band and it through up this band. Billy Talent. 4 Hit albums and 5 top 75 hits but no top 40 singles. This emocore song was their most famous track. They are absolutely huge in their native Canada. Billy Talent - Try Honestly

I also did a random thing. Went onto wikipedia and kept clicking Random Article until I got to a song by someone who never made the top 40.
And here it is.
The Bronx had passed me by, but I note they had two charting hits here.
