This starts on Friday 7th June in France. The USA are the defending champions after beating Japan in the final in Canada four years ago. England finished 3rd in that tournament after beating Germany for the first time ever and hopes are high under manager Phil Neville, with the Lionesses winning the SheBelieves Cup in the States earlier this year. Scotland have qualified for the first time and will face England in their opening game, just as they did at Euro 2017. They will be hoping to become the first Scotland side, male or female, to reach the knockout stages of a major tournament. GROUP A (world ranking in brackets) France (4) South Korea (14) Norway (12) Nigeria (38) GROUP B Germany (2) China (16) Spain (13) South Africa (49) GROUP C Australia (6) Italy (15) Brazil (10) Jamaica (53) GROUP D England (3) Scotland (20) Argentina (37) Japan (7) GROUP E Canada (5) Cameroon (46) New Zealand (19) Netherlands (8) GROUP F USA (1) Thailand (34) Chile (39) Sweden (9)

^ Yup, an easy win for France, 4-0. Would have been 5-0 if not for VAR.

Group A: The hosts open with a comfortable win that saw them score 3 first half goals and add a late 4th. Wendie Renard scored twice to take an early lead in the top scorers table.

Group A: An easy win for Norway but not quite enough to match hosts France's score yesterday. Pos | Team | Pld | GD | Pts | 1 | | 1 | +4 | 3 | 2 | | 1 | +3 | 3 | 3 | | 1 | -3 | 0 | 4 | | 1 | -4 | 0 |

Group B: Spain came from behind to beat debutants South Africa, thanks to 3 goals in the last 20 minutes, 2 of which were penalties. South Africa also had Nathando Vilakwani sent off. Former champions Germany had an unconvincing win over China. Pos | Team | Pld | GD | Pts | 1 | | 1 | +2 | 3 | 2 | | 1 | +1 | 3 | 3 | | 1 | -1 | 0 | 4 | | 1 | -2 | 0 |

Group C: The first upset of the tournament as Italy come from behind to score a 95th-minute winner against the fancied Australians. Brazil had a much easier day with Cristiane scoring a hat-trick as they beat debutants Jamaica 3-0. Jamaica's US-born goalkeeper Sydney Schneider saved a penalty and was the main reason the margin of victory wasn't more. Midfielder Formiga started for Brazil, becoming the first woman to play in 7 World Cups and at 41, is the oldest outfield player in the tournament's history. Nikita Parris puts England 1-0 up against Scotland after 13 minutes through a very soft VAR penalty given for handball.

My understanding of the laws as they apply today is that it was a clear penalty. The defender's arm was a long way from her body.

My understanding of the laws as they apply today is that it was a clear penalty. The defender's arm was a long way from her body. They did make that clear in the commentary. It was more the fact the arm was already in that position prior to the cross and didn't move at any point. And Scott Booth made a very good point about balance.

Ellen White doubles England's lead on 40 minutes. Aside from an early surge in the opening minutes, England have dominated.

It certainly wouldn't have been given before they started tinkering with the law and its interpretation.

Group D: England win their opening game at the World Cup for the first time since 1995 but Scotland ran them very close. Nikita Parris's penalty and Ellen White's strike put England 2-0 up at half-time and they had another disallowed for offside 30 seconds into the second half. Scotland performed much better after the break and got a deserved goal through Claire Emslie 11 minutes from time but couldn't find an equaliser.
