Group D: A first ever World Cup point for 500/1 outsiders Argentina and a very disappointing result for Japan, who are looking to reach their 3rd final in a row. Japan had 3 players booked, which means Argentina sit in 2nd place for now. The draw boosts England's chances of winning the group and potentially opens things up more for Scotland as well. Group E: Kadeisha Buchanan scored the only goal as group favourites Canada saw off Cameroon.

Interestingly, when Argentina and Japan were in the same group in 2007 (England were also in that group), Japan needed an injury-time goal to beat Argentina, who lost their other games 11-0 (to Germany) and 6-1 (to England).

Group F: Sweden scored 2 late goals to see off Chile after the game had earlier been suspended due to lightning. Defending champions the USA got their defence of the title off to a spectacular start, breaking the record for the biggest ever win at the World Cup finals. After going in 3-0 up at half-time, the US scored 4 goals in just over 6 minutes after the break and added 6 more in the final 16 minutes. Alex Morgan scored 5, matching the record set by Michelle Akers at the first World Cup in 1991. Last 16 line-up as it stands:
Norway v Italy England v New Zealand France v Australia Germany v USA Brazil v China Canada/Netherlands v Argentina Spain v Japan Sweden v Canada/Netherlands
Plenty of time for things to change (particularly in terms of Germany's position) but as it stands, the top 4 in the world rankings (USA, Germany, England, France) would all be in the same half of the draw in the knockout stages. At 5th, Canada would be the highest ranked team in the bottom half of the draw.

I would say it was men against boys in the US v Thailand game, but it quite clearly wasn't. First half US were not that good, some of the passing and crossing was shocking for the holders, but 2nd half they improved and got the goals, that we all knew were coming.

Some of the goalkeeping in the games I've seen has been attrocious. That Thai GK would struggle to save a word document

Hey leave her alone, she did catch the ball (once) from a corner, she was also rumoured to have caught a cold, but she dropped it and feels loads better now...

Group A: Nigeria pick up their first points with victory over South Korea, who will probably need to win their final game convincingly to stand any chance of progressing. France and Norway was settled by a VAR penalty 18 minutes from time. Pos | Team | Pld | GD | Pts | 1 | | 2 | +5 | 6 | 2 | | 2 | +2 | 3 | 3 | | 2 | -1 | 3 | 4 | | 2 | -6 | 0 |

I think VAR got it wrong again in the Oz v Brazil game, long ball over the top, Oz striker offside behind the defender, who therefore believes she has to head the ball, putting it past her own gk! Linesman flagged and it should have stayed as offside, because she is interfering with play. If she's not there the defender doesn't head the ball! I love the new offside rule apart from times like this, also sometimes in the box where a defender only heads the ball clear because there's a player behind him in an offside position, he heads it to an attacker, who puts it in the net, goal, it shouldn't be.

Certainly a controversial one. I can only assume it was given because the defender couldn't see the striker but as you say, her presence forced her into heading the ball.

Group C: In the match of the tournament so far, Australia came from 2-0 down to beat Brazil thanks to an own goal that was initially ruled out for offside but subsequently awarded after a VAR review. Marta's 1st half penalty for Brazil was her 16th World Cup finals goal, matching Miroslav Klose's record for the most by anyone, male or female and she is the first player to score at 5 World Cups. Tonight's results mean that Germany and France are definitely through to the last 16 - Germany will definitely finish in the top 2 of their group, and in the unlikely event that France do not finish in the top 2 of their group, they will be one of the 4 best 3rd-place teams.

I can’t believe some of the garbage I’m hearing about how nasty the U.S. were to keep scoring goals and then to celebrate scoring them. How contemptible!

It might have been the point to play some fringe players though in the 2nd half? And I expect if the US were ever on the end of the 13-0 hammering, you'd be criticising the other team for scoring and celebrating... And great achievement by Marta, but it has to be seem separately from Klose's record, they are two different sports/competitions.

England dominating against Argentina but just can't find a way through. Nikita Parris has missed a penalty.
