OK, this week 50 years ago, I "published" my 2nd official chart of my fave 20 songs within the UK top 30 singles, 11 years old, and seriously starting to get into noting songs down in notepads, including this chart. That's it at the bottom of this 75, I can only excuse myself for loving Cliff & Des at 2 and 3 by virtue of being not even a teenager! That said, Glen Campbell, Chicken Shack, Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel & Sinatra show a bit of sophistication for Primary School young John.

This week in 2019, it's yet another classic on top as The Ballad Of John & Yoko gives The Beatles a 6th chart-topper in this retro run. In my actual charts of the time it had to wait until 1976 and 1989 to top my charts. That, for the moment, keeps off my 3rd-single-bought-ever at 2, and first album and first EP ever bought at 6. Mama Cass gets a 2nd top 10 solo, and Marmalade a 2nd top 20. The Youngbloods get a leap into the 30, and highest new entry is Neil Diamond's signature song, the one that regularly recharts in the 21st century in the UK as a steady download/streaming classic that everyone knows. Back in '69 I had never heard of it: I had to wait until 1971 when it's UK chart success crossed-over onto radio in Singapore, at which point I taped it and went mad on it. So to me, it's 2 years early and is indelibly linked with nostalgia for '71! Sweet Caroline, take an early bow!

The Impressions get a big climb into the 40, and new songs are thankfully low in number to give my packed charts a bit of a breather. The Grass Roots goodie is one I bought on a greatest hits CD of theirs in Florida around 20 years ago after hearing it on oldies radio, I didn't wait a million years to hear it, it was a mere 30 years or so. Ray Stevens at 66 is another of his novelty songs which is actually amusing still, some 44 years since I bought his Greatest Hits on vinyl: Along Came Jones is a sort of homage to the early movie westerns, gently taking the Michael at the cliches. Key moment: Ray as tied up heroine on the train tracks snapping at her hero to shut up cos she's trying to sing. It's funnier in his voice, trust me. Joni Mitchell gets a 2nd Clouds track, Steppenwolf re-chart 6 months on, Procol Harum get a 3rd entry, and Flying Burrito Brothers a second.
