HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 12th JULY 1987

The Pet Shop Boys get another comfortable week at the top, becoming the first act to register a points tally over 200 for three consecutive weeks. It’s A Sin shows no signs of slowing down, still appearing on every individual chart and even extending its already sizeable lead at the top.



Heart spend another lonely week at number two, adrift of all other records either side of them.

A-Ha move up to number three with The Living Daylights to become their fourth Top Three hit.

Last week’s biggest climber, Black, continues to move up the chart as Sweetest Smile moves up a further four places to number four.

Highest new entry comes from Madonna, one of the most successful acts we’ve had on the Retro-Chart. Who’s That Girl debuts at number five to become Madonna’s fifteenth Top Ten hit.

This week’s biggest climb is from Banananrama, who jump 23 places to number 12 with I Heard A Rumour, closely followed by a 22 place leap at number 16 for Peter Gabriel with Red Rain.

In general this is not a great chart, there are 7 new entries, one brilliant, the others there to make up the numbers. The Beastie Boys started off great but don't really excite me anymore and well there's the rest of those.

However let's focus on the fact that, after missing out with Incommunicado peaking at #2, Marillion are back at #1 with a slow-paced song Sugar Mice from their album Clutching At Straws, the album title appearing in the lyrics of this song. You have to listen to the lyrics more carefully to really appreciate this song, and it has a similar theme to "Don't Give Up" by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush except that in this case the man who has been left out of work (blaming the government) couldn't face people looking at him and saying "what a jerk". That he's in Milwaukee (according to the lyrics) suggests the government he's blaming is Ronald Reagan's rather than Margaret Thatcher's, but either way it's clear that in the song he's married with children. In actual fact Fish has just got married recently prior to this song and has a career in music so it's clearly not about him personally. But then nor was Peter Gabriel's song. He does say on the phone where he can be found "number one at the end of the bar..."

Essentially this song goes down for me in the list of greatest lyrics of all time. I should set a topic to create a list, for people to suggest their own choices and why.

It's a first week on top for the 20th anniversary Beatles reissue, as the Summer Of Love classic tops my chart for the first time since 1976's Beatles reissues - or rather, new sleeves and formats - the catalogue numbers remained the same as they were never deleted. Madonna is denied a 4th consecutive chart-topper, at 2, and Boy George gets his second solo top 10, Billy Idol his 5th solo top 10, and George Michael guesting on a top 10 for the second time - David Cassidy's The Last Time being the first.

a-ha and Fleetwood Mac keep those top 20's going, there are big climbs for Red Box, a 3rd top 40, Jennifer Warnes, a second solo a decade on from Right Time Of The Night, and Smokey Robinson is back with his classic Motown ballad, Tracks Of My Tears, having first charted for me in 1969 - when it was already a few years old! The Gap Band revamp their 1980 hit at 51 - Oops! - and SAW debut as artists in their own right with the Northern Soul-flavoured dance-stomper Roadblock, and rather good it was too, at 53. At 59 Def Leppard return 4 years on from Photograph, with the even better Animal, a fab rocking record, even with the drummer Rick Allen having lost an arm in an accident. Technology helped him continue, with the band's help.

Sly & Robbie follow up Boops with Fire, and The B52's are back assisted by the Rock Lobster reissued hit, Wig giving them 8 years of entries. Skulking quietly in at 73, New Order are back with a bang, and a career highlight, as True Faith debuts - it wouldn't top my chart till the 90's remix, but it's still a major classic. Wet Wet Wet follow-up a brilliant debut with Sweet Little Mystery. Which is not in the same class at all. Start as you mean to go on...
