Pool A: SCOTLAND 34-0 SAMOA An easy win for Scotland to revive their World Cup hopes and the vital bonus point keeps alive the impending head-to-head with Japan. With Ireland's last 2 games against Russia and Samoa, they should finish on 16 points. Japan and Scotland will both expect to pick up bonus point victories in their next games, putting them on 14 and 10 respectively going into the final game. That means the most likely scenario is Scotland needing either a bonus point win or a win by 7+ points over Japan to reach the quarter-finals. Table: 1. Japan 2-9 (+27) 2. Ireland 2-6 (+17) --------------------------- 3. Scotland 2-5 (+10) 4. Samoa 2-5 (-9) 5. Russia 2-0 (-45)

England 2-10 (+70) 2. France 2-9 (+26) -------------------------- 3. Argentina 2-6 (+14) 4. Tonga 2-0 (-48) 5. USA 2-0 (-62)

Argentina are only the 2nd team to reach the semi-finals in one tournament then fail to make it out of the pool stage 4 years later, the other being Wales who reached the semis in 1987 but went out in the pool stage in 1991.

Pool A: SCOTLAND 61-0 RUSSIA Scotland keep their hopes alive with an easy win over Russia. There is a chance Sunday's crucial showdown with Japan could be called off due to the typhoon. Should that happen, Japan would progress and Scotland would be out (unless Ireland lose to Samoa) Table: 1. Japan 3-14 (+46) 2. Ireland 3-11 (+52) ------------------------ 3. Scotland 3-10 (+71) 4. Samoa 3-5 (-28) 5. Russia 4-0 (-80)

Pool D: AUSTRALIA 27-8 GEORGIA In tricky conditions, Australia overcame a stubborn Georgia XV to confirm their place in the quarter-finals. Australia took 22 minutes to get off the mark and the score was only 10-3 at half-time before the Wallabies managed to extend the advantage in the second half. Australia will play England in the quarter-finals as long as Wales don't suffer a shock defeat against Uruguay. Georgia's defeat means they miss out on automatic qualification for the next World Cup. Fiji finish 3rd despite their earlier defeat to Uruguay. Table: 1. Australia (Q) 4-16 (+68) 2. Wales (Q) 3-14 (+45) ---------------------- 3. Fiji 4-7 (+2) 4. Georgia 4-5 (-57) 5. Uruguay 3-4 (-58)
