-- ( -- ) My Unfinished Symphony - David Whitfield
Finally a number of new entries, quantity not quality. The highest entry is a very twee comedy song, a minor hit in the UK for Alma Cogan.
David Whitfield had another song "My Son John" that was so bad it can be joined with the other list of terrible relative songs. (Up there with No One Quite Like Grandma..)

Anne Shelton gets her second number one. The song was a minor US hit for the Chordettes. This version was produced by Joe Meek, who in the early 60s would go and produce a lot more great hits. This song also reached #1 in the UK. According to SheriffFatman it is one of the 50 worst number ones. I've invited him here to explain why. It's the 3rd NM #1 of 1956 so far that was also a UK #1, and the second UK #1 of 1956 to be an NM #1 although it hasn't got there yet by 8th September. Vic Damone's "On The Street Where You Live" was an NM #1 in 1956 but didn't top the UK chart until 1958. The other song to top both charts is Doris Day "Whatever Will Be Will Be (Que Sera Sera)" which was still UK #1 this week and was eventually replaced by Anne Shelton. Neither of Elvis's NM #1s of this year topped the UK charts.

No change at #1 but Johnnie Ray's UK #1 has a chance of matching that on this chart as it leaps up to #2. The highest new entry sees Georgia Gibbs replace herself in the chart. Razzle Dazzle: your song is in the chart.

Poor old Johnnie Ray... well if he never gets to #1 at least he was mentioned in a #1. And maybe one day I'll go back even further than near the end of 1955 he had older music then. Actually I once played a chart from early 1952 in which he was #1 with Walkin' My Baby Back Home. Not sure if he was walking her back in the rain.
And now, well I've always claimed great music is always great and doesn't date, but when Green Door was covered by Shakin' Stevens in 1981 I wasn't exactly excited by it, in fact I was rather disappointed it knocked the Specials off and then kept Stevie Wonder off the top. Not that it was a bad song.. it was, well just dated... I guess in 1956 it "belongs".
So next week will be a bettle between Anne Shelton, Johnnie Ray and Jim Lowe but there is also a classic new entry coming.

11 ( 7 ) Song For A Summer Night - Mitch Miller (#2[2]) 12 ( 9 ) In The Middle Of The House - Vaughn Monroe (#8) 13 ( 8 ) Don't Be Cruel - Elvis Presley (#1[4]) 14 ( 13 ) When The White Lilacs Bloom Again - Helmut Zacharias (#13) 15 ( 11 ) Donkey Cart - Frank Chacksfield (#9)

Jim Lowe's "Green Door" (or "The Green Door") has climbed to #1 keeping out "Just Walkin' In the Rain". In the UK chart, Frankie Vaughan's version of Green Door peaked at #2 behind Johnnie Ray, and was in the UK the best known version of the song. When Shakin' Stevens recorded his version my mum told me it was originally a Frankie Vaughan song. Or at least that he had recorded it in the 50s. Jim Lowe's version would reach #8 in the UK too, whilst there was no competing version of "Just Walkin' In The Rain" thus helping Johnnie Ray I guess. (His was not however the original, which was done by the Prisonaires in 1952, and was actually written by two people who were in prison at the time).
As for Green Door, we won't know what actually was happening behind there as nobody would tell us or let anyone in. A lot of conspiracies. But in any case it's just a song. Probably had there really been such a party they may have been taking drugs.
The highest of 4 new entries meanwhile is Fats Domino's most famous song, entering at #6 pushing his own song down a place in the process.

Yet another classic song enters the chart this week, Elvis Presley's ballad. I'm generally not that keen on his slow stuff but this one is the exception. Yet I foresee it may not make it to #1.
Entering at #25 we have a song that was later covered by Elton John & Kiki Dee. The interesting thing about the duo performing it is both have been namechecked in the titles of NM #1s. Grace Kelly by Mika and Bing Crosby was the intended subject of "Christmas With Bing" by Poncho Pirates, Christmas #1 in 2011. (Unlikely they were singing about an inferior search engine).

Apparently Mitchell Torok is still alive, and is now aged 90. The song got to #6 in the UK chart making him one of the oldest UK Top 10 artists still alive.
He also wrote another song about Mexico, Mexican Joe, which was a hit for Jim Reeves

-- ( -- ) I Don't Care - Liberace
Second week at number one for Fats Domino, whilst the classic "Singing The Blues" is the highest new entry for Guy Mitchell.
For Guy Mitchell this is his 2nd hit of the year and the first reached #1 with the little known "99 Years (Dead Or Alive)". He was one of the artists in the first "official" UK chart and the 1940 - 1952 chart book shows him having several more number ones, but in the official UK chart it's his second of three number ones, with "She Wears Red Feathers" being #1 for him in 1953.
One of the artists leaving the chart this week is Mitch Miller, the man who "discovered" Guy Mitchell and is the main band-leader behind him and also behind Johnnie Ray.
The "king of swing" who is Frank Sinatra has also a history going back way before the "official" chart era with several number ones in there. His band-leader is Nelson Riddle, who also works with Dean Martin. He hasn't yet had a #1 in 1956.
However Gene Vincent did top the chart a few months ago with "Be Bop A Lula".
Tony Chrombie's hit is a double A-side with the classic "Shortnin' Bread", but I chose to chart Teach You To Rock.

Among those who enter this week is Johnny Cash.
The highest new entry is Joe Valino with Garden Of Eden, and Frankie Vaughan is not going to chart with this, nor with Green Door as Jim Lowe has already taken that one, and Gene McDaniels got "Tower Of Strength" in 1961. If only Frankie Vaughan hadn't built so much of this part of his career on performing songs that were already released by his US counterparts he may have ended up with more hits in my chart. My grandmother did know his family though.
Tommy Steele does get a new entry and had more hits later, but obviously Guy Mitchell is the only one who will have a hit with Singing The Blues at this point in time.

As Guy Mitchell gets his second #1 on this chart, I actually took some time to check Guy Mitchell's back catalogue and unlike many of his contemporaries he seems to have done mostly charming uptempo songs. Not surprising he had so many number ones even prior to the chart era. If I did go back that far he'd potentially be on of my top artists of the 1950s pre-Elvis (and seems to be doing ok post-Elvis too). Actually I had previously done an old-chart playlist from earlier in 1952 when he was in the chart with "There's a Pawn Shop On The Corner In Pittsburgh Pennsylvania". The other surprising thing I found was there are actually a couple of Guy Mitchell videos - one of him performing Singing The Blues, one of She Wears Red Feathers (a UK #1 for him in 1953) and one with Feet Up (official #2 but #1 pre-chart-era) after which he then also performs She Wears Red Feathers.
There is a video of Fats Domino performing Blueberry Hill but that was a live performance much later on.
On the new entry side, there is actually a shortage of great songs this week. Patti Page gets the higher of two entries but this is nowhere in the class of Allegheny Moon which reached #2 for her.

When this playlist came out I foresaw it was nowhere near as good as the previous one, and that Singing The Blues would probably get a lengthy stay on top. Singing The Blues was actually my top song from that playlist above Blueberry Hill.
Teresa Brewer's single was a relatively minor hit. Very bubblegum pop.

With Elvis it's often a numbers game - he recorded and released so many singles that some of them are good and do well but there are many others that don't. His version of Blue Moon is rather dull (but then I've always liked the Marcels version and never liked it done slow) and he also had another song out called "Love Me" (not Tender..) which was dropped from the playlist but a rock-a-billy song gets him the highest entry.
The second highest entry is his contemporary for "king of rock and roll" Bill Haley, who has charted this year with a lot more songs than you probably knew. I've saved "Rip It Up" for Little Richard though.

1 December 1956:

As Guy Mitchell keeps Teresa Brewer off #1 this week, Singing The Blues becomes the 3rd hit this year to manage 5+ weeks on top. Guy Mitchell himself has amassed 7 weeks at number one this year now equal to Dave King and Anne Shelton, with Elvis Presley leading the way with 10 weeks, and by climbing to #3 he may well make it 11 weeks on top next week.
The highest new entry is a familiar song: The second hit on this chart for the duo, who are at this time aged just 14 and 11 and are actually both younger than Viola Wills who would have a hit with the song 23 years later (aged 40 at the time, aged 17 now). Trini Lopez is older than all of them, and as of 2019 all of them are alive except Viola Wills.
Sonny James gets a hit with "The Cat Came Back". His version of Young Love, rather than Tab Hunter's, is on the playlist for the last week of the year. So he can look forward to a bigger hit soon.

10 December 1956:
1 ( 2 ) Mutual Admiration Society - Teresa Brewer < 1st #1 > 2 ( 1 ) Singing The Blues - Guy Mitchell (#1[5]) 3 ( 3 ) I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine - Elvis Presley 4 ( 8 ) Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now - Patience And Prudence 5 ( 5 ) Rudy's Rock - Bill Haley And His Comets

11 ( 18 ) Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody - Jerry Lewis 12 ( 7 ) Garden Of Eden - Joe Valino (#2[2]) 13 ( 19 ) Confidential - Sonny Knight 14 ( -- ) Christmas Island - Dickie Valentine 15 ( 11 ) Mama From The Train - Patti Page (#9)
16 ( 9 ) Hey Jealous Lover - Frank Sinatra (#3) 17 ( 14 ) Blue Moon - Elvis Presley 18 ( 21 ) The Cat Came Back - Sonny James 19 ( -- ) That's Right - Deep River Boys 20 ( 10 ) Rock With The Caveman - Tommy Steele And The Steelmen (#5)
21 ( 17 ) Since I Met Your Baby - Ivory Joe Hunter 22 ( 15 ) A Rose And A Baby Ruth - George Hamilton IV (#13) 23 ( -- ) Friendly Persuasion - Pat Boone 24 ( -- ) Join In And Sing (No 3) - Johnston Brothers 25 ( 16 ) The Bus Stop Song (A Paper Of Pins) - Four Lads (#6)

So this week Teresa Brewer takes over at the top from Guy Mitchell. Teresa Brewer's song "Music Music Music" spent 12 weeks at #1 in the UK according to the 1940-1952 charts book, which also has a number of earlier Guy Mitchell chart toppers, so both very successful prior to the UK official chart era (in which Guy Mitchell was in the first chart but Teresa Brewer wasn't).
Harry Belafonte gets in the chart with Jamaica Farewell. His famous Christmas song was actually on the list this year too but rejected. His most famous song (well in my opinion) is on the first 1957 playlist.
Dickie Valentine had the UK Christmas #1 of 1955 with "Christmas Alphabet". In my chart that flopped but "That Old Pianna Rag" was a top 5 hit. His new song reached #8 in the UK and is better in my opinion than Christmas Alphabet.
I hope to finish posting the charts of 1956 by the weekend in time for me to make a "chart of the year". Will be interesting to listen to that.

It's been a custom that when a retro chart reaches date of the year we are on at the time I make a playlist of the chart and listen to it. So 15 December 1956 chart is being posted on 18 December 2019 and I guess it's either this one or 22 December 1956 on 19 December 2019.
Only one new entry though, and that's only because I didn't choose Bill Haley's version of Rip It Up.

The penultimate chart of the year but it has a surprisingly high number of entries. Betty Johnson gets the highest with an uptempo swing song. It even has a video.
Among the other new entries is a Christmas song by Dave King, who signficantly has what will probably turn out to be the #1 single of the year with his previous hit.

-- ( 24 ) Blue Moon - Elvis Presley (#17) -- ( 25 ) Mama From The Train - Patti Page (#9)
The final chart of 1956 and I can now compile my chart of the year. These are always based on points and therefore doesn't have any weighting attached, in particular where there were stronger periods than others. Up to the week "Singing The Blues" entered there was a short period that was very strong, and after that only Teresa Brewer stood out as a #1. It took a while to get to the top as I wanted Singing The Blues to get at least 5 weeks.
Still it will be enjoyable that I can now play a playlist of the best of 1956, which was the primary reason for doing retro charts when I started the project.
The main reason for picking this period was to get Elvis Presley in, but now having become more acquainted with Guy Mitchell and Teresa Brewer there is a temptation to go back further. (Prior to doing this I probably knew about 2 songs by each of them).
