For the first time there were no UK Top 40 singles inside the top 10. The number one came from an act who'd never appeared in my chart and was previously the guitarist and mandolin player in Crash Test Dummies. His solo work features a completely different musical style and he reached a brand new audience with an appearance on Later... With Jools Holland in 2005, performing the song that topped this year's chart.
This was my last end of year chart for a few years. I stopped compiling my monthly chart midway through 2010 for various reasons and apart from an aborted attempt at the start of 2013, I didn't begin again until 2014. That meant no end of year chart either. For 2009, it was a similar story to '08, though there was one top 40 hit in my top 10. The chart was topped by a band who should have done so two years earlier and who continue to have a presence in my chart today.

9. AIRBORNE TOXIC EVENT - Sometime Around Midnight
After a hitaus of several years, both my monthly chart and end of year chart returned. This year's chart was topped by the first new song I heard at the beginning of the year.
So this is the last flashback as it was the last year I compiled an end of year chart until this year. However, I didn't actually finish compiling the 2016 chart until this year. There was a lot going on at home at the time and although I'd managed to compile positions 11-100 and decide the top 10 songs, I never actually got around to choosing the order for the top 10. This year, I finally revisited it and decided to redo the whole top 100, whilst still using the same 100 songs. Women dominated this year's top 10, with 9 of the tracks featuring female lead vocals. The one that didn't almost ended up becoming the greatest James Bond theme ever recorded. The top 10 ended up like this:
