Surely Match Of The Day's greatest episode took place on 15th April 1989 when Desmond Lynam and Jimmy Hill accurately told what occurred and what was seen ...... before Murdoch newspapers; the South Yorkshire police; & the Conservative Government of the day put a different fake news narrative slandering Liverpool supporters & Merseyside in general:
The truth of all events of this magnitude are always there BEFORE those with a vested interest in covering their hides take control of the narrative.

Pleased MOTD won, would have been happy with Only fools and horses as well, as that is iconic.

For those who don't follow football or even sport, it might just seem like it's just "the football" but Match of the Day (along with Grandstand) brought televised sport into people's homes in a way never seen before in this country, in the same way Top of the Pops did with music. Whilst it may have disappeared from our screens on and off with contractual changes, it still remains an iconic part of the TV schedule and given the popularity of the Premier League nowadays and the continued embargo on live football on a Saturday afternoon, it remains as important as ever.
