HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 6th DECEMBER 1987

The Pet Shop Boys end T’Pau’s five week reign at the top of the chart in spectacular fashion. Charting last week at number 38 on airplay and import sales alone, Always On My Mind leaps to the other end of the chart as it sweeps aside all opposition.



Their cover of the Elvis classic sees them move into pole position on the 80s Retro-Chart-Topper Leaderboard. In just two years they have amassed eight number one singles, maintaining their extraordinary 100% success rate.

Once again, picking up points on every single individual chart, they move a long way clear of their nearest rival, Michael Jackson, as The Way You Make Me Feel moves up to number two to become his biggest charting single to date from the Bad album.

Last week’s number one slips to number three, closely followed by R.E.M. as The One I Love continues its steady climb up the chart.

Highest new entry is from Mel Smith and Kim Wilde as their cover of Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree enters at number 13.

Biggest climb this week is obviously from the Pet Shop Boys but there are notable advances from the Pogues and Kirst MacColl as Fairytale Of New York jumps 26 places to number 8 and Wet Wet Wet, who climb 25 places with Angel Eyes.

However, the song contained the lyric "plan a mass murder" and it was banned from daytime airplay by the BBC due to the then-recent Hungerford massacre. Thus, the band decided not to release it in the UK; it was released in other regions, including North America, Europe, Australia and Japan. Mark Ronson featuring Daniel Merriweather 2007 cover version reached UK #2 (& #1 on the download chart).
