The first of three of possibly the least predictable chart-toppers this year. Reaching a respectable number 8 on the Official Chart, we proved that this gorgeous song has enduring appeal and took this all the way to the top. Wonderful Life was another single week number one in September.

1987 was a huge year for Fleetwood Mac, with three Top 5 singles including a number one, which features a bit later on in this countdown. Big Love peaked at number two on the Retro-Chart in May, narrowly beaten by Shattered Dreams, but still easily outperforming the relatively low number 9 peak of the Official Chart.

We were a bit divided on this record. Four of us didn’t award any points to this 80s anthem, with four of us compensating by scoring over 100 points each. You’re The Voice hit number two in May, unfortunately coming up against Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and unable to progress any further. Still a much higher position that the number 6 placing it achieved on the Official Chart.

And here’s another surprising chart-topper. Making their Retro-Chart debut in April, Johnny Hates Jazz took Shattered Dreams all the way to number one for a fortnight in May. Peaking at number five on the Official Chart, it went one better here than the number two peak it achieved in the US. As we creep closer to the 1,000 points barrier, there’s a huge gap opened up between this song and those that have featured before.

Just six points short of joining the 1,000 points club, Whitney’s first (and to date, only) chart-topper. This perfect piece of pop spent four weeks at number one during May and June.

Another act making their Retro-Chart debut this year, Don’t Dream It’s Over gave Crowded House a number 3 song in May. We couldn’t quite match the number two position it achieved in the US, but easily eclipsed the disappointing Top 30 peak it achieved here on two separate occasions. Its lengthy 14 week chart-run has seen it outperform some big chart-toppers, although it’s still a long way off being the biggest song of the year that didn’t actually reach number one on the weekly charts.

13) GEORGE MICHAEL AND ARETHA FRANKLIN - I KNEW YOU WERE WAITING (FOR ME) (1,051 POINTS) POINTSAndy 0 Cool Christie 94 Darkstar 4 Earl Purple 112 Kingpin 75 Mark 105 Pop Chart Freak 168 Raliverpool 69 Rubcale 89 Shireblogger 92 Smokeyb 66 Thorney 44 Whitneyfan 78 Other points 55 TOTAL POINTS 1,051
This collaboration between two absolute legends provided a four week chart-topper early on in the year, becoming the biggest song for both of them on the 80s Retro-Chart. George had previously hit number one as part of Wham! with I’m Your Man and as a solo act with Careless Whisper, but this is the first time he’s generated over 1,000 points from a song. This picked up some big points during its time at number one but fell away quite quickly, managing only a seven week chart run in total.

The latest of Madonna’s seven chart-toppers, La Isla Bonita spent three weeks at number one in April. This will be the first time in three years that Madonna hasn’t placed a song in the Year-End Top 10, and with 1988 looking like it’s gong to be a quiet year for her, it may be a while before she’s back on this countdown.

True Faith provided New Order with a long-overdue second number one, spending three weeks at the top in August. It’s been a long four years since Blue Monday hit the top, becoming one of the biggest songs we’ve had on here. Another of the five songs this year that have featured on every individual chart.

They’d been around for years in their native Australia, but Live It Up, with a bit of help from Crocodile Dundee, proved to be a breakthrough in new territories across the world for them. Live It Up was a two-week chart-topper back in February, unfortunately they haven’t been able to come close to replicating that success with any of their subsequent releases yet.

Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now saw a welcome return for this US rock act, having made the Top Five in 1985 with We Built This City. It first hit the top of the chart in April and looked set for a lengthy residency, however they were prematurely displaced by Johnny Hates Jazz. Three weeks after they first hit the top of the chart, Starship managed to recover their chart crown….for one more week at least. Nine weeks in the Top Ten has helped Starship to the seventh biggest song of the year.
