HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 10th JANUARY 1988

The Pet Shop Boys appeared to have an almost unassailable lead last week with a 58 point margin, looking pretty secure at the top and on course for another six week chart topper. All that changed this week with a spectacular collapse that saw them lose 70 points and relinquish the top spot as Belinda Carlisle takes over at number one, mirroring her ascent on the Official Chart.




Belinda is top on six individual charts, taking over at number one on her tenth week on the chart. Heaven Is A Place on Earth looks to have plateaued though, registering the same level of points as last week. So although Always On My Mind is still registering points on more charts, Heaven has benefited from retaining strong support across a narrower section of charts.

With the Pet Shop Boys dipping to number two, there’s a big climb for Terence Trent D’Arby, with Sign Your Name up to number three. If this goes no higher, TTD will have had records peaking at numbers two, three and four over the last year.

Krush are down to number four as they make room for Terence Trent D’Arby, as George Michael moves up to number five with Father Figure, the third single from the Faith album.

It’s already been number one in the US and has flown into the Official Top 20 this week as Tiffany makes a re-appearance on the Retro-Chart at number eight with I Think We’re Alone Now. It featured briefly on the chart at the end of last year but is back in style this week.

There are a number of double digit climbs up the chart this week, the biggest of which comes from the Beatmasters and the Cookie Crew as Rok Da House leaps 20 places to number 17.

Belinda Carlisle topping the combi chart is all the more impressive considering a few of us are counting it via their USA chart runs should they happen first.

The Liverpool born sophistipop singer/songwriter should have had a greater success with this UK #67 "slipped disc". But perhaps we can blame it's lack of success on Brexiteers as it peaked at Germany #11 & France #7, and made #8 on the Euro chart.

My policy of charting them when they hit the US top 20 will hurt Debbie Gibson too on this chart. And Tiffany but less so as those were much smaller hits for me anyway.

The proper Shake Your Love video has only just been added. When I charted that, there was only an extended remix which I didn't like that much. Having said that it also didn't do that well in my chart, stalling at #8 even one place lower than it got in the UK chart.

Well that is shocking call yourself a Debbie G fan, her first 2  singles were number ones in my chart originally not sure if they both still are in my remakes, yes they are and Foolish Beat made #2, #8 in my remake
