HAVEN COMBI RETRO-CHART W/B 6th MARCH 1988
Another closely fought battle at the top, with the record at number one moving about as the week progressed. In the end the ultimate victor was Belinda Carlisle as she becomes just the third woman to achieve a second Retro-Chart topper, following the trail previously blazed by Madonna and Bonnie Tyler.
With I Get Weak following just seven weeks after her previous number one vacated the top spot, this is the fastest turn-around of chart-toppers since the Pet Shop Boys added this to their tally of records when What I Have Done To Deserve This followed It’s A Sin to the top in the space of just four weeks.
The points still remain very scattered, meaning that Belinda’s lead is extremely tenuous, with just four points separating the top four records. Next week’s number one is very much up for grabs.
A late surge propelled Eighth Wonder to the number two spot, just two points behind Belinda Carlisle. Written by Retro-Chart favourites the Pet Shop Boys, it could still give them a hand in yet another number one song.
Joint third place is split between The Primitives with Crash, who were unlucky to only move up a single place this week, and last week’s number one, Joe Le Taxi by Vanessa Paradis. The Primitives, along with Eighth Wonder and Belinda Carlisle are serious contenders for next week’s number one.
This week’s biggest climb is from Erasure as Ship Of Fools sails 15 places to number 7.
Highest new entry is from Whitney Houston as the fourth single from her smash album Whitney, Where Do Broken Hearts Go, enters at number 17.
And here’s this week’s Retro Chart in full….
