Lady Gaga - Bad Romance Well yes, she just went from great to better didn't she! This is quite possibly her signature song now, and rightly so because it is an absolute banger of the highest order. I mean some of it is nonsense really, but she manages to turn it into a five minute piece of essential listening. Much as I love Madonna, I think she would have killed for something like this at the time!

Post-1998 would mean you'd be getting a lot of songs that weren't hits in either the UK or USA. Tich is the best from them all.

Rage Against The Machine - Killing In The Name I don't really know where to start with this one... OK it was originally released in 1993 as an anti-racism and police brutality song, and reached #25. Sixteen years later and the same track was downloaded in its thousands after a campaign to make it the Christmas #1, as a protest against the Simon Cowell X-factor machine that had all but killed the race to the festive top spot - until this year that was! So, what about the song itself - well I must admit it really depends what mood I'm in as to what effect it has on me. I do like the way it builds up and takes over your brain. It just ends up consuming you and you end up with the song taking over your whole being - Or am I just talking absolute rubbish, who knows? Maybe it's helping that I've just finished work and it's been a bit of a stressful week, but this is just really welcome it my life at this very time! Let's just say I can see exactly where it is coming from!

Joe MCElderry - The Climb So little Joe didn't lose out in the end as his Miley Cyrus cover, and X-Factor winners song 2009 still managed to do what it said in the title and 'climb' to the top to become the final chart topper of the decade. I have to admit that Joe always gave a really good performance on the show and it was always really obvious he could sing - He had more charm than the likes of Leon Jackson too. That said, I still prefer Miley's version of this song. You get the obligatory choir at the end which elevates the song, but it's nothing special really.

So I was going to go straight onto the #1s of 2010 but I've decided to wait until the end of Time Machine (as I don't want to be reviewing songs that could still feature in the last 3 rounds).
In the meantime though, I'm going to start a new thread with the #2s of the 2000s to keep me occupied while I wait!

This break gives me a chance to catch-up and add in some ratings, starting off by going right back to 2000 2000Best:1. Manic Street Preachers - 'The Masses Against The Classes' 2. The Corrs - 'Breathless' 3. Eminem feat. Dido - 'Stan' 4. Eminem - 'The Real Slim Shady' 5. U2 - 'Beautiful Day' Manics a long way ahead of the field, one of my all-time favourite #1 hits. Worst:1. Five + Queen - 'We Will Rock You' 2. Mariah Carey & Westlife - 'Against All Odds' 3. Madonna - 'American Pie' 4. A1 - 'Same Old Brand New You' 5. Geri Halliwell - 'Bag It Up' Predictable I guess, dominated by crappy covers with Five + Queen, by contrast to above, being among the worst ever.

2001
Best: 1. Shaggy feat. RikRok - 'It Wasn't Me' 2. S Club 7 - 'Don't Stop Moving' 3. Afroman - 'Because I Got High' 4. Kylie Minogue - 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' 5. Atomic Kitten - 'Whole Again'
Definitely not a vintage year for #1s!
Worst: 1. DJ Pied Piper & The Master of Ceremony - 'Do You Really Like It?' 2. Westlife - 'Uptown Girl' 3. Geri Halliwell - 'It's Raining Men' 4. Atomic Kitten - 'Eternal Flame' 5. Blue - 'Too Close'
I still don't f*cking like it! Nor the parade of dismal covers behind it. One act lands on both the 'Best' and 'Worst' lists...

Some great pop and dance songs reached #1 in this year... So did some absolute stinkers.

2003Best:1. Tomcraft - 'Loneliness' 2. Sugababes - 'Hole In The Head' 3. Elton John - 'Are You Ready For Love' 4. Christina Aguilera - 'Beautiful' 5. Black Eyed Peas - 'Where Is The Love' Worst:1. Michael Andrews & Gary Jules - 'Mad World' 2. Fatman Scoop - 'Be Faithful' 3. Westlife - 'Mandy' 4. Daniel Bedingfield - 'Never Gonna Leave Your Side' 5. David Sneddon - 'Stop Living The Lie' A mediocre year for #1s, with nothing truly hitting the heights, a couple of dismal lows, and a smattering of sheer dullness. I've had a bit of a love/hate relationship over the years. At the time I thought they had totally ruined Tears for Fears' best song, and couldn't believe such a depressing record could be Christmas #1 over the festive treat by the Darkness!
My thoughts exactly. I don't have quite the burning hatred for the record that I did at Christmas 2003, but I still strongly dislike it, would rank it as one of my least favourite #1s of all time, and would never listen to it by choice.

After 2003, I no longer recognise every song on the lists and will need to take a little longer to listen to the ones I'm less familiar with...

2009 was the second of the "classic" X-Factor years. Joe McElderry though was almost just what they didn't want - a great karaoke singer who could perform all the songs thrown at him in a manner similar to the original, note perfect, and winning all the votes as that is what the public felt they were supposed to be voting for. At the time of this battle, my "Get Real Music Back Into The Charts" campaign was intended to get new music by real artists into the chart on a regular basis. But of course you have to "be someone" to start a successful campaign. My issue with RATM was that it was a song from 1993, and not a new song by a decent but ignored band they were trying to get to the top. The first song of my campaign "Light It Up" by Whitman, is an example of such a song - it was the best song on my playlist at the time. Having said that, it only had a live version on youtube at the time, although the song is on Spotify, but then I can't remember if Spotify even existed back then. Whitman never really amounted to anything, in fact the follow-up single was one of the worst I encountered that year. But what of Joe McElderry vs other X-Factor acts on the same show? Well the show also had Olly Murs who became successful and Jedward whose charm as entertainers (and being better than Chico) gave them the chance of some success, but the problem was that Joe was waiting for someone else to make his career rather than using the X-Factor win as a platform for making his own, and so in my opinion it is his own fault that he failed and nobody else's.

I actually thought Danyl Johnson was absolutely streets ahead of anybody else that year, but for some reason he left the show criminally early, like Maria Lawson in series 2.

I actually thought Danyl Johnson was absolutely streets ahead of anybody else that year, but for some reason he left the show criminally early, like Maria Lawson in series 2. In the audition he did Joe Cocker's interpretation of "With A Little Help From My Friends" and then did the song again after reaching an early sing-off which he survived. He finished 4th when there was no sing-off. However just like Joe, it was an opportunity to make something of his career but instead of he expected someone else to make it for him.

I've decided to revive this thread, but I don't know how far I'll get this time - We'll see...!
Iyaz - Replay Well I had completely forgotten this song (and singer), but it was instantly recognisable on 'replay'! A quick look on the ever reliable Wikipedia reveals that he also had a #3 hit with 'Solo' (me neither!), but not much else. This was #1 for 2 weeks in January 2010, and it really doesn't seem that long ago - I really like it actually, it's one of those that you hear and go "Oh yeah!"
