As John Miles gets a 6th week at #1 on the week of his birthday, the question is what will replace this song at #1, and will 10cc even climb up in 2 weeks time when Music has had its 7th week? The other contender may be Silver Star, which could go where December 1963 failed. In the UK this had a strange chart run where it climbed to #6 then fell to #9, then leapt up to #3 and then fell back to #21. In the USA it was also a #1 for them. Frankie Valli also has a solo hit in the chart but that one isn't doing very well.
Also entering this week are Pratt & McClain's theme from the TV series Happy Days and a song by Jimmy James & The Vagabonds that was written by Biddu whose own instrumental is 2 places lower.

Two singles stayed at number one for 7 weeks in the 1950s (albeit that was just 4 years of charts), only once did it happen in the 1960s. In the 1970s there have now been 5 singles that have stayed at the top for 7 weeks. Staying an 8th has never happened as it has been a long-standing NM chart tradition that 7 is the maximum number of weeks a song may remain at #1.
So next week there will be a new number one. Will the Four Seasons manage to do so here what they oculdn't do with "December 1963"? I can't promise that, but I will assure you it won't fall all the way to #21.
No other single has ever spent 7 weeks at #2. But after all this, will I'm Mandy Fly Me get a week at #1? Where will it finish in the chart of the year? - never mind on points, in reality it's the #2 of the year, with Music as the #1.
The other singles this decade to have been at #1 for 7 week have been:
Question - The Moody Blues American Pie - Don MacLean Jarrow Song - Alan Price Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
and those are all classics.

-- ( -- ) Manchester United - Manchester United FC -- ( -- ) Baretta's Theme - Rhythm Heritage
I suggested that might happen and it has, and so "I'm Mandy Fly Me" won't be the single that spent the most weeks at #2 without reaching #1.
Cliff Richard gets the highest entry and if that can break through the top 2 and get to #1 it will mean a number one in 4 different decades for him, and also mean his total number of NM #1s would be 8, which quite a decent number really.
Robin Sarstedt is the brother of Peter Sarstedt and also Eden Kane who both had UK #1 singles. This song dates back to around the 1930s I think, and 1976 is seeing a retro-revival, with "The Continental" by Maureen McGovern also on my later playlist.

Cliff Richard isn't number one this week. Back in 1976 I'd probably have made the Wurzels number one, as I loved it (as an 11-year old). By entering at #10 this week it's already peaked higher than Convoy GB, and it's probably mostly on sentiment.
Convoy GB is a total parody, this one is a funny song with the same tune as Brand New Key and mentions a key in it too, but otherwise doesn't actually copy phrases from the original. (That Brand New Key has some stalker-aspect to it is possibly a subject of parody. And incidentally that song reached #2 in my chart).
In addition the chart was far stronger a few weeks ago than it is now. These weeks have a few good songs interspersed with an enormous amount of chart fill, mostly in the name of "disco" songs or "funk". The current playlist is pretty much the same. I would say I could happily reduce my chart down to a top 30 at this point.

Never overkeen on La Ross's Hangover.
With disco big and coming off a successful tour I'm surprised it didn't do better in the charts. (#10).
EarlP's even less keen on it.

Cliff Richard gets to #1 with "Devil Woman". It does of course help that it's a relatively poor time and not huge competition - this wouldn't have got to #1 2 months ago. However, now my chart is covering his entire career, this is his 7th, and the first of those that was not a #1 in the UK chart. The previous six were "Living Doll", "Travelling Light", "The Young Ones", "Bachelor Boy", "Summer Holiday" and "Congratulations". He will have one more #1 in his career with "All I Ask Of You". I think 8 number ones is quite a decent total... Time to enter him in Haven Factor?
Gallagher & Lyle get the highest new entry with their 2nd hit of the year, following "I Wanna Stay With You" and Eric Carmen's second hit which was covered by Dana in the UK and her version was a smaller hit in my chart. I thought maybe the Bay City Rollers had had their last hit but actually they release different singles to the US market and "Saturday Night" was a #1 there, and this one was released there rather than "Love Me Like I Love You".
David Bowie: not one of his most popular songs. He does like to do some off-beat music and it doesn't always work for me, or others. This wasn't a big hit in the UK either.
Brothers Johnson had a top 5 hit in the USA with this. They'll eventually chart with "Stomp".
Hardly surprising the Billy Paul song of that title failed in my chart. It also goes on far too long. "Me And Mrs Jones" did reach #3 in my chart.

But then I was totally wrong about Diana Ross - i didn't think she could last long and I was amazed at her finishing positions in the first few rounds.
She could have gone a few rounds further if her mentor hadn't thrown in the towel with the poor Gaye duet, even You Are Everything would have probably seen her squeeze through.

The comeback song of Thin Lizzy - they hadn't intended making this a single but after having had no commercial success after "Whiskey In The Jar" this song just got discovered by a DJ and played - or something like that.
Candi Staton also gets an entry in the top 10. I was surprised actually that "Moonlight Feels Right" was never a UK hit. It's one of those songs I know because they played it on the radio and thought it had probably charted but whilst it did in the USA, it didn't in the UK.
In the battle of the boy-bands, the awful hit by Our Kid fails to get in but Scottish group Flintlock, who wrote their own song and play instruments, and sound a bit like a cross between the Bay City Rollers and Status Quo (at least I think the do).
Seattle band Heart make their chart debut this week. They actually had quite a few US hits before they made it in the UK.

Queen are back and enter inside the top 10 this week. As Rod Stewart climbs into the top 10 with "Tonight's The Night", America enter at #23 with "Today's The Day". Above them we have a classic cover by Bryan Ferry, the original being Wilbert Harrison but better known in the UK for Canned Heat's 1970 cover. both of those as "Let's Work Together".
Much lower down, Tammy Wynette's latest country re-issue (originally out 1968) scrapes in, but there's no room for John Travolta's US top 10.

This year has a fascination with old music and in particular the Beatles who themselves get a hit now, and will have another one next month, the one I was definitely expecting. T Rex enter just below that. We are only one year and a few months now until Marc Bolan dies.

"My Sweet Rosalie" is my favourite Brotherhood of Man song and # 2 in Year-End chart of 1976.

I think the lower end entries show what I've said about the year as both "Forever And Ever" and "A Little Bit More" make it into the chart in spite of the fact I'm not that keen on either song. "A Little Bit More" is a bit better but given they reached #2 in my chart with "Cover Of Rolling Stone" in 1973, I have to ask what happened to this band?

As we are halfway through the year, it's time for the sporting thread.
Football
Liverpool were League Champions, the first time for 3 years but this is the start of the really big period for them, as from this point until 1990 they never went 2 years in a row without winning it and they would win 10 such titles in these 15 years, missing out only in 1978, 1981, 1985, 1987 and 1989. They would then have to wait 30 years for their next one.
QPR were the underdog team that nearly won it though, and fell just one point short.
Liverpool also won the UEFA Cup, beating Brugge on aggregate, drawing 1-1 away and winning 3-2 at home.
Southampton were the underdog team that did win though, when they beat Manchester United 1-0 in the FA Cup Final.
In the League Cup it was Manchester City who were victorious 2-1 against Newcastle.
In the European Cup the winners were Bayern Munich who beat Saint Etienne 1-0. This was a knockout competition and only Champions (and the previous year's winners) got to play in it back then. Derby County looked like they might beat Real Madrid in the second knockout round when they won 4-1 at home, but then lost 5-1 in the Bernabeu.
In the Cup-Winners Cup, West Ham made it all the way to the final, but were defeated 4-2 by Anderlecht
In Scotland, the top division was now called the Premier Division and Rangers won 6 points ahead of Celtic. They also beat Celtic 2-1 in Scottish League Cup Final (1976-77 season as it completes in 1976) and Hearts 3-1 in the Scottish Cup Final, so a domestic treble.
The European Championship was hosted in Yugoslavia and the other teams were West Germany, The Netherlands and Czechoslovakia. It was a straight knockout and every game went to extra time. The final also went to penalties, where Czechoslovakia beat West Germany.
Tennis
Björn Borg defeated Ilie Năstase in the Wimbledon men's singles final, 6–4, 6–2, 9–7 Jimmy Connors defeated Björn Borg in the US Open men's singles final, 6–4, 3–6, 7–6(11–9), 6–4
Note that the US open had tie-breaks at 6-6 whereas Wimbledon did not.
Chris Evert defeated Evonne Goolagong Cawley in the Wimbledon women's singles final, 6–3, 4–6, 8–6, and also in the US Open by a more convincing scoreline of 6-3, 6-0
American Football
In January 1976 the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Dallas Cowboys 21-17 in Superbowl X.
Baseball
In the World Series of Baseball, which is the first to 4 matches, the Cincinatti Reds won all 4 games against the New York Yankees.
Snooker
Ray Reardon beat Alex Higgins 27-16 in the World Snooker final.

I thought it would be tricky as Queen and Elton John & Kiki Dee both entered the UK chart the same week, but as Queen entered the US top 40 three weeks earlier it has managed to get to number one anyway and stay a second week before Elton John & Kiki Dee turned up. With the Carpenters entering both charts this week, plus some entering one that had entered the other before and a couple of re-issues too thrown in, there are only 3 new songs on the playlist for this week, but one of them is "Don't Go Breaking My Heart".
Much in the keeping of the "retro" nature we've seen in 1976, Walter Murphy does a "funky" version of Beethoven's 5th symphony first movement, or bits of it anyway.
The top 10 contains 7 new songs, a cover of an old 60s song (at #2), a re-issue of an old 60s song (at #4) and a cover of a 1930s song (at #10)

-- ( -- ) I'd Really Love To See You Tonight - England Dan & John Ford Coley -- ( -- ) I Thought It Took A Little Time - Diana Ross -- ( -- ) Who'd She Coo - Ohio Players
Elton John seems to peak at #2 a lot, but he has had 3 previous number ones in this chart, with "Your Song", "Rocket Man" and "Crocodile Rock", and now he gets his 4th, together with Kiki Dee who herself has had a few hits like "Amoureuse" but now gets to #1 for the first time.
The highest entry by Lou Rawls is written by Gamble/Huff who also have written for Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes. This is a good song, I bet Teddy Pendergrass who had made a wonderful job of singing it too, and whilst there is a lot of disco/soul music around, this is the kind of it that I do like.
The Isley Brothers get one of their classics in the chart too, The Christians covered this song later.
And then the Beatles song I was expecting this year... it first came out in 1968 as part of the album commonly called "The White Album" simply because it had a white cover. Written by Paul McCartney to impersonate a Chuck Berry song called "Back In The USA".
It will be competing in the chart next week with Wings.
Below those comes in Tavares with one of their most classic songs. So actually quite a good week for new music inside, 4 great songs entering the top 20, 3 of them new songs.

-- ( -- ) Sideshow - Chanter Sisters
Paul McCartney's Chuck Berry tribute from 1968 climbs to #7 but his latest song enters at #9 this week. Lower down we have another Bee Gees classic. Chicago enter at #20 this week but their "big" one is due to enter next month. It will be competing with Abba and Rod Stewart though so a bit tough...
Peter Frampton's hit was a live version of an album track from 1975, and really I'm not that keen on it as a live version, but that's what was released as a single. He did write the song. The studio version isn't even on Spotify, just this and an acoustic version. It later became a hit for Wlll To Power as part of a medley with Freebird and then Big Mountain in a reggae version.
Another KC & The Sunshine hit but I don't like this one as much as "Queen Of Clubs" or "That's The Way I Like It".

A relatively quiet week for new entries and next week's list is also quiet but it gets busy in August. David Dundas has some kind of title having descended from a part of the royal family, albeit distant. This was his signature song, I think he only had one other hit.
Johnny Wakelin's second song about the same subject, the boxing match between Ali and Frazier, gets the second entry this week. (Actually this is about the match, the other hit was just about Ali).

In the UK chart "Silly Love Songs" peaked at #2 earlier in the year behind that Combine Harvester song, and "Let 'Em In" peaked at #2 in the week it moved past "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" but was caught by Abba's "Dancing Queen" which leapt from 16 to 1. As "Another Day" had also peaked at #2 for him, it meant 3 number twos for Paul McCartney without having yet had a #1 since the end of the Beatles. Finally at the end of 1977 he did get to #1, knocking Abba off the top in the process.
In my chart though it's his 5th number one since the Beatles and the 4th with Wings, with "Another Day", "Live And Let Die", "Jet" and "Band On The Run" all having reached #1 before this. That compares to John Lennon having had 3 and George Harrison and Ringo Starr none. John Lennon's have spent more weeks at #1 though, so we'll have to see if Paul can catch up with this song. (John Lennon 12 weeks, Paul McCartney 10 including this week).
"Play That Funky Music" is a bit of a classic, isn't it? There are a few big classics hitting us in the next couple of weeks (one of which I have already mentioned). Fleetwood Mac also something of a classic that was overlooked by the UK public at the time. The only hit for Little Anthony & The Imperials in the UK, who have had some hits in my 50s retro years including "Tears On My Pillow", was another of these Northern Soul re-issues, originally recorded around 1966.
Apparently "You Don't Have To Go" was the Chi-Lites' joint-highest peaking UK hit. Really? It peaked at #3 as did "Have You Seen Her" although that one spent more weeks in the top 5, this one only one week in the top 7, and "Have You Seen Her" also charted again in 1975 together with "Oh Girl" reaching #5.
Note: the next 1976 chart will be posted next week as I've reached the end of the playist. The 1960 ones will be posted every day as there is no more score-up it's simply a merge exercise now.

So far all of Wings' number ones stayed 2 weeks on top, so will Wild Cherry take over next week to keep up that run?
James & Bobby Purify had a UK hit earlier in 1976 with "I'm Your Puppet" but in my chart that was a #4 hit for them in 1966 and then they had 2 further hits in the 1960s with "Wish You Didn't Have To Go" (#31 in 1967) and "Shake A Tail Feather" (#14 in 1967), so "Morning Glory" is their first hit in 9 years and may be their biggest (but I have no idea why it isn't on Spotify).
