So we're almost at the end of another year and December will mean I start to compile my end of year chart again. I first started to compile an end of year chart in 1998, inspired by ITV's Record of the Year Show and the fact and didn't think any of the contenders were worthy of the title. I compiled one every after until 2010. After a gap of a few years I compiled charts in 2014-16, then started again last year. I've also compiled retrospective end of year charts for 1994-97 so this will be the 21st end of year chart I've compiled. It is a bit annoying that I have those gaps but given they would feature very little, if any music from the actual chart, it would be far too time consuming to go back and compile them now.
Anyway, on to this year. Unlike many other peoples', my end of year chart is a completely stand-alone chart. Positions in my monthly chart stand for nothing, meaning it's possible for songs that don't chart particularly high to do very well after they've grown on me. You could even get a song that didn't reach my monthly chart featuring in the end of year chart, though this is less likely since the monthly chart expanded to a top 40 this year.
It's been an excellent year for music once again, despite the singles chart suggesting otherwise. There is still great music out there, you just have to know where to look. I make a monthly playlist that uses multiple sources, those being 6Music, Radio X and more recently Amazing Radio plus John Kennedy's weekend show on Radio X. I also sometimes look through personal charts here at Haven for songs by acts I already know who don't feature on those previously mentioned. The result is a playlist that is getting towards 200 songs, which is whittled down to just over 100 after first listen and it is from that list that I compile my monthly chart. This year I started making a countdown video in the style of early 90s Top of the Pops to announce the chart. Also, because each chart has a completely different set of songs with no songs going up or down, I decided to compile a revisited chart for each month, three months after it was originally published. My monthly chart is really all about instant appeal, while my end of year chart is more about lasting appeal so the revisited charts seem like a good halfway house of those two factors. Of the seven I've compiled so far, four have seen a different song at no.1. Posting the revisited charts here is a lot of fun as it allows me to make a countdown video in the style of those seen in the very early days of The Chart Show on Channel 4 in the mid 80s.
I am considering compiling a top 200 for the first time this year. Usually, I whittle my shortlist down to 200 and post it here in alphabetical order but don't assign positions beyond the top 100.
So who will feature this year? Well those who follow my charts will have noticed a few names popping up on several occasions. It's rare that an act gets more than two songs in my end of year chart these days but there are a couple of acts that are in line for four in the form of Sorry and Fontaines DC. The latter also spearhead one of the other stories of this year's chart and that is the resurgence of Irish music. No act from the Republic made my top 100 last year but Fontaines DC are likely to be joined by Columbia Mills and Inhaler, among others.
We may also see some acts returning after a long absence from the chart with Doves returning with new music this year and possible appearances for the Pixies and Badly Drawn Boy.
I will begin compiling the chart early next month once I've got November's chart and the revisited chart for August out if the way. My plan is to reveal the top 100 using Chart Show style videos like those described above, with a separate video for each group of 10 songs. Hopefully they won't be ruined by songs being blocked by labels. Only one has been blocked so far out of the 70 that have featured in my videos (so obviously I replaced the audio with fart noises).
There will be further updates once I get started in a few weeks so watch this space...

Now whittled down to 120 songs.
The two acts who had four songs in the last 200, still have all four songs in contention.
Of the four acts who had three, one still has all three in contention, one has two but the other two acts are down to one song each.
Of the final 120 songs, 60 have male lead vocals, 53 have female lead vocals and 7 have both. No instrumentals are still in contention (there were 3 in the final 200).
I've counted at least 16 different nationalities in the final 120. There may be more if I research further.

So here is the start of the countdown. Give the video a look if you have time - I put a lot of time into them and they're great fun to make. Plus it saves clicking on the links to hear the songs - you can hear a little sample and see what takes your fancy. Below is the text version, which includes the information from my monthly chart, showing the original and revisited positions, plus each act's history in my end-of-year chart (though there are a lot of debutants this year). PART 1 (100-91): 100. JAMIE LENMAN - The Future Is DeadHamster Hits positions: 17-20 Chart debut. 99. LOTTERY WINNERS - Love Will Keep Us TogetherHamster Hits positions: 14-19 Chart debut. 98. Need to know how you make those videos would love to do that. Out of this lot Spyres, Asylums and DMAs made my chart. Only other one I have heard of is Lottery Winners I use 4K Video Downloader to get the videos from YouTube. The graphic overlays I make myself in Photoshop and are based on the early Chart Show ones from the 80s. I edit it all together using a program called Lightworks then upload it to YouTube. Then you just have to hope the video doesn't get blocked for copyright reasons - so far it's only happened with one song but that song is in the next part of the countdown..! There's so much music around now and so many different places to find it, there's going to be a lot of stuff people don't know in many people's charts on here. Jamie Lenman was the front man of Reuben back in the noughties.

WYTCHES - A Love You'll Never KnowHamster Hits positions: 3-5 Chart debut. As I feared, the Stereophonics track was blocked again so I replaced the audio with the theme from Steptoe & Son. I've listed Miro Shot as English but the reality is they're a multi-national music and art collective with over 450 members in total. The music element is based in England but I know nothing about the members apart from frontman Roman Rappak. I suspect there may be American and French members, maybe other nationalities too but I haven't managed to find confirmation of this.

Love that Deftones track but I think that Bee song is the worst on the album, not a fan of her bedroom pop stuff so much.

I don't mind Beabadoobee but most of what I've heard by her has been "OK/good" rather than "great". This however, is a beautiful track which grabbed me right away, though I would like to hear how it sounds recorded with a full band.
