39 Pixies - Trompe le Monde
Their fourth album and I didn't buy this at the time, in fact this is a big hole as apart from 'Doggerel' it is the only one I don't own now, need to see if I can get it cheap somewhere. The reason I didn't buy it at the time was the singles "Planet of Sound" just didnt do it for me at all, just too shouty and a Mary Chain cover really. So it didn't hold me much hope. It is a much better record than I thought, though I did always like "Alec Eiffel". But so many songs I do really love now 'Letter to Memphis', ;U-Mass' and 'Motorway to Roswell'. Basically, the aforementioned singles and 'Palace of the Brine' are the weakest. The record only reached #92 in the US and #7 in the UK. 4/5

Glam Metal Detectives totally passed me by, I vaguely recognised the song. Still didn't watch a lot of TV in 1995.

40 & 41 Guns n' Roses - Use Your Illusion I and Guns n' Roses - Use Your Illusion II
I tried to split them up, as I do kind of prefer 'Use Your Illusion II'. But it just didn't seem fair to do. Why? well I don't know about you but I listened to Use Your Illusion 1.5, which was the best songs of both records on one side of a cassette. Thing is my 45 mins, may sound different from yours or someone else's hence why we ended up with all this. It is actually insane 150 mins of music. Anyway here goes 1. Civil War 7:36 2. Knockin' on Heaven's Door 5:36 3. So Fine 4:09 4 You Could Be Mine 5:48 5 Right Next Door to Hell 2:58 6 Dust n' Bones 4:55 7 Live and Let Die 2:59 8 Don't Cry (Original) 4:42 9 November Rain 8:53 10 Coma 10:08 That is a 10/10 album! Ok that is maybe not fair, both albums are pretty solid overall but c'mon just release one record with the 15 best songs and it would have sold 30 million. In the end, they both reached #1 and #2 respectively in the US and UK and sold 7 million each in the US alone. But dunno about you in 1991 but I couldn't afford to buy both of them so I copied it from a mate, so there was one or two lost sales already! 4/5 and 4/5

42 EMF - Schubert Dip
A gap was in the market to push indie dance rock to teenage girls. They were already starting to follow bands like Jesus Jones and PWEI but EMF took that to another level. Their debut single is without doubt one of the best debut singles ever, certainly of the 90s anyway. 'Unbelievable' was an instant hit propelling them to fame in the UK and US. Sadly, they don't have anything else in their catalogue which came close to that song. I love most of this album especially 'Lies' and 'Children'. I was so into this scene already so I lapped it up but they just didn't have the creativity of Jesus Jones. So in many ways this is the reverse of the Carter album, you can take almost any song of this album and enjoy it but as a 40 minute record, it can be a bit tiresome. Which is why it falls short of the big boys on this list. The record reached #3 in the Uk and #12 in the US 4/5

43 Kingmaker - Eat Yourself Whole
Staying with the British indie rock, we have the debut album from the band from Kingston upon Hull. Very much in the Wonderstuff vein they have been releasing some great EPs but this is their first album. I didn't actually buy this but I dp have all their singles from "Two Headed EP" through to their final single "In the Best Possible Taste (Part 2)" in 1995. So only missing the first 2 EPs . Many of their best songs made the album but quite a few didn't. It is quite patchy when it's great its brilliant 'Really Scrape the Sky' but then it can be a bit generic as well. So a solid album but not a classic for me, it reached #29 in the UK 4/5

44 Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine - 30 Something
Their second album and one that really works more as a complete piece than just tracks. Personally I feel it just never lent itself to singles and 'Bloodsport for All' especially was not a good one. But that is Carter, they are very much an album band still and that is just the way it is. You either like Carter USM or you don't, if you like any of their stuff, check out this album in one go, it is the fairest way. '101 Damnation's may have stronger parts but this is arguably a stronger whole. As for my favourite track, if I had to pick one. "A Prince In A Pauper's Grave". The record reached #8 in the UK. 4/5

45 World of Twist - Quality Street
The debut album from the band from Sheffield. They really did not sound like anyone else in 1991 mixing psychedelia and indie pop. I guess Super Furry Animals kind of took over where they left off. Most famous for their nearly hit "The Storm" but my favourite was "Sons of the Stage" which was a great little indie anthem. The whoie album pretty much keeps up the erm quality, just one or two strawberry creams. They even show how you do a 60s cover with an awesome version of 'She's a Rainbow'. The record reached #50 in the UK. 4/5

46 Milltown Brothers - Slinky
The debut album from another hotly tipped UK indie rock band. Most famous for their hit "Which Way Should I Jump", they are a very underrated band. Very little I didn't like on this record, if you know the hit, you know exactly what you are getting. It is pre-Brit Pop in the Cast, Seahorses vein. The record reached #27 in the UK. 4/5

47 The Blue Aeroplanes - Beatsongs
The fifth album from the Bristol band. Although 'Swagger' has a higher placing in 1990, this record is probably just as good and in many ways even better. It feels more coherent and the record is so immaculate in its production and music. The band's songwriting is probably not bettered either. Again they are a band for R.E.M fans but this one is much softer in sound, it is just a great listen. The record reached #33 in the UK. 4/5

48 Richard Marx - Rush Street
His third album and eventhough I had been a huge fan, that seemed like so long ago. I was pretty much done with him and then he goes and releases 'Hazard'. The lead single 'Keep Coming Back' I pretty much ignored. 'Hazard' is though incredible, even if it borrows a little (a lot) from 'Circle In The Sand'. So I was interested again, I bought 'Take This Heart' as well but it was not enough to get me to buy the album. So this is the first time I heard it in full and I love it. It is a bit long which stops it being up with the first two but it is more varied and interesting than 'Repeat Offender' in many ways. The clue was in the title, to be fair. So maybe if I play this album more it could be a top 20 record but it is too soon. The record reached #7 in the UK and #36 in the US, what a turn of events. 4/5

49 Flowered Up - A Life With Brian
Their debut album and very sadly the only album they released, they were really getting very good. 'It's On' was a decent start but in my head I filed it next to low grade Madchester bandwagon acts like Candyflip. But then they just got better and better, yes they are very Happy Mondays but they managed to make their own style and by the time they released 'Take It' they were a great band. What they could have done with their second record, judging by 'Weekender' could have been one of the records of 1993. But back to this record it was way better overall than I expected. It reached #23 in the UK. 4/5

50 Senseless Things - The First of Too Many
Quite nice having a duality with retro charts at the moment as a song from this record made the chart this week in 1991. 'Got It At The Delmar'. This is the second album from the UK pop punk band. Missing some songs I would have expected but otherwise it fires along at some rate, this is pop punk very much UK style. It just has so much energy, you can just imagine the crowd all pogoing and moshing away. Nothing groundbreaking at all, and 'Easy To Smile' would have given it a boost. The record reached #66 in the UK. Love the Jamie Hewlett art on the cover. 4/5

Not sure about Blink 182, it will start low for me I know it is hard for me to be not biased. There is so much nostalgia and meaning in this song but in the end it is a lazy rehash of 'I Miss You' with too much auto-tune and missing Travis which is one of the best things about that song. It is still Blink though. The new Sum 41 is how it should be done though.

This is showing Blink 182 how it is done, shame this is the end for them rather than a new start. Even the video harks back to their debut.

We have had the Maccabees returning in a way so let's have the band that I always associate with that time as well. This must be their best single in a very long time.

51 Northside - Chicken Rhythms
Another new band this time from Manchester and of course they are very associated with the Madchester scene. Not sure if they had a great start with their almost novelty indie dancefloor hit 'Shall We Take a Trip'. There was much more to them, there was the epic 'My Rising Star' and my favourite and US radio hit 'Take 5' which basically steals 'More Than A Feeling' for its intro, how can you fail. Just don't take them too seriously, you maybe had to be there. This was their only album and it reached #19 in the UK. They had a second all ready but was never officially released due to the Factory records collapse. Again I think you can find it on some old music blogs. 4/5

52 The Real People - The Real People
Now a very fine new band from Liverpool and once again it is that Brit Pop sound before it's time. Basically picking up where The Las left off, we have a mixed of baggy and classic college indie rock. The best track by far is 'The Truth'. One of the best indie rock songs of the year. It really should have been huge but the time was just not right. The more baggy singles 'Window Pane' and 'Open Up Your Mind' (Let Me In) are great as well if not groundbreaking. It is a pretty straightfoward indie rock record which will be ten a penny in a fewe years but they are doing it brilliantly now. The record reached #59 sadly their only chart appearance. 'The Truth' cruelly peaked at #41, there was 17 entries above them so pretty harsh week. 4/5
