Average ranking for each team in the Super Bowl era.
Ranking for each team is based on their performance through the season with playoff teams ranked according to the round they reach, then by regular season record. Head-to-head is used as a tie-breaker where possible, then strength of schedule, with the team with the tougher schedule getting the better ranking.

As a ravens fan this just shows how disappointing it is to get knocked out when they're capable of much more.

The narrow field spread, and the amount of movement despite this being an average of 54 years of performance for many of the teams, just goes to show how effective the NFL's equalisation systems, especially the draft, are.
There is also little correlation between the wealth of the owners and the performance of their franchise. For example, the Green Bay Packers are a not-for-profit side owned by their fans and based in easily the smallest city of all the teams, and yet they rank 6th overall. Meanwhile, the two New York teams are in the bottom half.

There's no reason why a team can't go from worst to first in the space of a few years but some just suffer from consistently bad management and decision-making off the field. In the 55 seasons played in the Super Bowl era, 20 teams have won the Super Bowl, 8 have reached the Super Bowl but never won and 4 are yet to play in the Super Bowl, though of those 4, only the Detroit Lions have played in all 55 seasons.

Regularly one of the best teams defensively, but usually with an offence that sucks and a general manager who gets every big decision wrong but has managed to keep his job due to the team scraping into the playoffs (only thanks to them being expanded to 14 teams).

Kansas City, Detroit and Houston all matched their previous bests. A new low for New England at 31. They've been the worst team in the league before but that was back when there were 28 teams. Interestingly, Washington has the no.2 pick in the draft, ahead of New England, despite beating them this season. This is because strength of schedule is used as the tiebreaker for the draft by the NFL, rather than head-to-head, despite the latter being used as the main playoffs tiebreaker.
