The top two songs both have the word "Fandango" in them.

Never heard of them before but looks to be 60s orientated with some 70s.

Looking at some of those in the top 40, I find it hard to believe there were "thousands" of votes...

You only need 5 Boom Radio employees and 20 of their mates to submit a Top 40 to reach 1,000 votes. And it looks like Clifford T Ward rounded up 10 of his relatives to join him in voting for himself, so that only means they needed the dj, the producer, the station manager, the cleaner, the pizza delivery person and Mark, and they'd almost be there.

I am not familiar with this version, but I love Annie Lennox and Sarah Brightman's versions of the song.

You could only vote for three songs, i did vote but mine didn't make the list and i wasn't expecting to. I went for songs that don't get a lot of exposure instead of predictable ones. One was a Billboard hit from the late 80s (You Got It All by The Jets) and another was from a song from 1996 that should have done better which was Lemon Tree by Fools Garden. I can't remember my 3rd choice. I just picked three that came to mind at the time.
Interesting how most of the songs were from the 60s and 70s only a few 80s ones and from the early part of the decade. Surprised Careless Whisper wasn't there, it's usually a staple of these charts.

Well at least it's different to Heart FM and Crapital same old songs on constant rotation. A lot of the music you hear is stuff you don't normally here. And it is mixed decades. Some recent stuff that suits the station too. Heard Gabrielle played.

I am not familiar with this version, but I love Annie Lennox and Sarah Brightman's versions of the song. I hope this has at least got you listening to the Procol Harum one - it is one of the most iconic songs of the summer of love, perhaps even more so than "All You Need Is Love".

He must have done it via a seance...

As the above chart contains a number of 60s and early 70s songs, as a comparison here is Radio 1's "the nations all-time Top 100" chart which was broadcast in the run up to Christmas 1976 and which was published in Record Mirror in January 1977.
Procol Harum are down at number 19. The Bay City Rollers fanbase (which by late 1976 was shrinking) could still muster enough votes to vote for their then current single, 'I Only Want To Be With You', which lands at number 40. The link below is to a PDF version of the top 100.

I remember Radio 1 did another all-time top 100 in the early 90s. Possibly 1992. My sister had a poster of it that you could send off for. I'll have to see if I can find it online.

Boom Radio is basically Radio 2 for listeners who are now too old for Radio 2 since they've moved for a younger audience in the past few years. Hence their DJs include David Hamilton (82); Graham Dene (72); Roger Day (76); Nicky Horne (70); David "Kid" Jensen (70); & Dame Esther Rantzen (80).
They are aimed at the Baby Boomer audience who love late 1950s to 1970s pop music; and easy listening standards from Frank Sinatra & Doris Day through to Adele & George Ezra .... who thought popular music started getting too edgy in the early 1980s when new acts appearing on TOTP were borrowing their mums/sisters makeup & clothes, & using synthesizers is not "real music".
Curiously, when I had that station on last Saturday when Radio 2 was in Prince Phillip funeral mode; they played two acts entered in Haven Factor 9 back to back. I'll laugh my head off if both songs appear in the same round.

Amazing how popular Diana Ross' I'm Still Waiting was in the 70s - #10 here.
Radio One actually used to do these top 100's regularly (every few years) and ISW used to finish high right into the 80s.

Back in the 70s it was still being played as an oldie right up to the end of the decade. I believe Tony Blackburn played a large part in getting the label to release the track as a single so it wouldn't surprise me if he and his producer chose to play it quite frequently.
I've just read a 1988 Radio 1 all time list and this time 'I Owe You Nothing' by Bros is at number 1. Numbers 2 to 5 are 'Bohemian Rhapsody', 'Careless Whsiper' and 'Stairway To Heaven'. Number 5 is 'Nothing's Gonna Save My Love For You'... worse still, number 6 is 'Drop The Boy'
This 1998 list shows how the listening audience to Radio 1 then changed in a decade
1 Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy 2 Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit 3 Verve - Bittersweet Symphony 4 Underworld - Born Slippy 5 Radiohead - Creep 6 REM - Everybody Hurts 7 U2 - With Or Without You 8 John Lennon - Imagine 9 Oasis - Live Forever 10 Stardust - Music Sounds Better With You
Not a bad list , I might make a Spotify playlist out of that.
