BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS - ExodusRelease Date: June 3, 1977
Exodus is a 1977 album by Jamaican reggae band Bob Marley and the Wailers, first released in June 1977 through Island Records. The album's production has been characterized as laid-back with pulsating bass beats and an emphasis on piano, trumpet and guitar. Unlike previous albums from the band, Exodus thematically moves away from cryptic story-telling, instead it revolves around themes of change and religious politics. The album is split into two halves: the first half revolves around religious politics, while the second half is focused on themes of sex and keeping faith. On 3 December 1976, an assassination attempt was made on Bob Marley's life in which his chest was grazed and his arm was struck with a bullet, but he survived. Following the assassination attempt, Marley left Jamaica and was exiled to London, where Exodus was recorded. The album was a success both critically and commercially, it received gold certifications in the US, UK and Canada, and was the album that propelled Marley to international stardom. In 1999, Time magazine named Exodus the best album of the 20th century. In 2001, the TV network VH1 named it the 26th greatest album of all time. In 2003, the album was ranked number 169 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, maintaining the rating in a 2012 revised list, re-ranking at number 71 in a 2020 revised list. 1. Summary Bob Marley's best selling studio album features a good chunk of the songs you can find on his Best Of "Legend" album, "Jamming", "Waiting in Vain", "One Love/People Get Ready", "Three Little Birds" and "Exodus" have all gone down as classics since he lost his battle with cancer aged 36. "Exodus" is quite a unique record in that Bob Marley was in self imposed exadus when he recorded this album with the record written and recorded in London after an unsuccessful attempt to take Marley’s life at the end of 1976 when a group of people attacked him and Rita at his house in Jamaica and shot them both, despite the assassination attempt, both Bob and Rita appear on the Kingston stage two days later at an event to unify Jamaica, after the show Bob Marley leaves his beloved Jamaica and leaves for London, England. He wouldn’t set foot on Jamaican soil for 18 months. So this album was recorded well outside the usual reggae scene which only adds to the solemn feel of the album, but that uniqueness only adds to the appeal. "Exodus" is everything you may and can expect from a Bob Marley album, political statements, a smooth reggae sound, poetic lyrics and beautiful arrangements, if you are looking for a gateway Bob Marley album to sink your teeth into you cant go wrong with this varied and beautiful Bob Marley album 8.65/10

I agree, it is the ultimate hipster album and it was pretty obscure outwith the US when it came out, I never knew about it until Pitchfork raved about it years later. But yes it’s very good but maybe not as good as critics think it is. It's a typical "Rate Your Music" darling. 28th place in their all-time list.
