The draw for the European section of qualifying for the 2023 Women's World Cup was made today so I thought I'd start a thread for it. The tournament is being played in Australia and New Zealand - the first World Cup to be staged by two confederations. It will take place in July and August 2023 and will be the first Women's World Cup to feature 32 teams. The allocation of places is as follows: Hosts: 2 Europe: 11 (+ 1 playoff slot) CONCACAF: 4 (+ 2 playoff slots) Asia: 5 (+ 2 playoff slots) Africa: 4 (+ 2 playoff slots) South America: 3 (+ 2 playoff slots) Oceania: 0 (+ 1 playoff slot) The final three qualifiers will be decided through a 10-team intercontinental playoff tournament to be played in early 2023. Europe has its own separate qualifying competition just like the men's World Cup. Other confederations have their own continental championships double up as World Cup qualifying. Europe features 51 teams (Andorra, Gibraltar, Liechtenstein and San Marino haven't entered), drawn into nine groups. The nine winners qualify for the World Cup. The nine runners-up go into a somewhat over-complicated multi-round playoff tournament with the best three runners-up starting in Round 2 and the other six starting in Round 1. After the Round 2 matches, the three winners are ranked based, combining results in the group stage and Round 2 of the playoffs. The best two qualify for the World Cup, the other team goes into the intercontinental playoffs. The draw: * = qualified for 2019 World Cup (UEFA coefficient ranking in brackets) GROUP A Sweden * (5) Finland (16) Ireland (21) Slovakia (28) Georgia (44) GROUP B Spain * (6) Scotland * (14) Ukraine (20) Hungary (29) Faroe Islands (43) GROUP C Netherlands * (1) Iceland (13) Czech Republic (19) Belarus (30) Cyprus (42) GROUP D England * (3) Austria (12) Northern Ireland (27) North Macedonia (34) Latvia (45) Luxembourg (49) GROUP E Denmark (9) Russia (15) Bosnia & Herzegovina (26) Azerbaijan (36) Malta (38) Montenegro (46) GROUP F Norway * (7) Belgium (10) Poland (22) Albania (33) Kosovo (39) Armenia (unranked) GROUP G Italy * (8) Switzerland (11) Romania (24) Croatia (31) Moldova (41) Lithuania (47) GROUP H Germany * (2) Portugal (17) Serbia (25) Israel (35) Turkey (37) Bulgaria (unranked) GROUP I France * (4) Wales (18) Slovenia (23) Greece (32) Kazakhstan (40) Estonia (48) The first matches will be played in September.

While we were all distracted by Euro 2020, the draw for Asia's 1st round took place. It features 4 groups of 4 and 4 groups of 3, with the winners progressing to the Asian Cup, which will act as the remainder of World Cup qualifying. The top 3 from the last Asian Cup: Japan, Australia and China, plus hosts India qualify automatically for the 2022 tournament. The first round qualifying matches will be held at a single location for each group with teams only playing each other once. * = group host GROUP A Chinese Taipei * Bahrain Turkmenistan Laos GROUP B Vietnam Tajikistan * Maldives Afghanistan GROUP C North Korea Singapore Iraq Indonesia * GROUP D Myanmar * United Arab Emirates Guam Lebanon GROUP E South Korea Uzbekistan * Mongolia GROUP F Philippines Hong Kong Nepal * GROUP G Jordan Iran Bangladesh * GROUP H Thailand Palestine Malaysia The Group H hosts are still to be decided as none of the teams drawn in the group had stated their intention to be a host.

Caroline Graham Hansen and Lisa-Marie Karlseng Utland both scored hat-tricks as Norway started their campaign by putting 10 past Armenia. Norway are one of only seven teams to have qualified for every World Cup (the others being the USA, Japan, Sweden, Germany, Nigeria and Brazil) and lifted the trophy in 1995. Valentina Limani's goal with 19 minutes remaining earned Kosovo their first ever World Cup point against Albania.

South Korea begin their bid to reach a third consecutive World Cup with an easy win that saw them 7-0 up by half-time. All the groups in this round feature the teams playing each other just once (apart from Group E, where only Singapore and Indonesia remain after the withdrawals of North Korea and Iraq, and they will play each other twice). That means South Korea will just need a draw in their final game against Uzbekistan, unless Uzbekistan manage to match South Korea's result against Mongolia on Monday.

2019 runners-up Netherlands needed a late equaliser from star player Vivianne Miedema to avoid a shock defeat at home to the Czech Republic. Juventus' Andrea Staskova put the Czechs ahead early in the second half before Arsenal striker Miedema levelled with seven minutes remaining. Belarus take an early lead at the top of the group after beating Cyprus, who were making their Women's World Cup debut.

England won their first game under Sarina Wiegman, putting eight past the second-lowest ranked side in Europe, though it should've been a lot more. Ellen White scored twice to take her international tally for England to 41, just five behind all-time leading scorer Kelly Smith. Beth Mead's stoppage time goal at St. Mary's meant England are top of the group on goal difference, ahead of Austria, who came from behind to beat Latvia 8-1. Northern Ireland also started with a win against Luxembourg and will be hoping to achieve back-to-back tournament qualifications after reaching next year's European Championship. England travel to Luxembourg on Tuesday while Northern Ireland are at home to Latvia.
