Russia haven't qualified for the World Cup since 2003 and a 2-0 win over Azerbaijan doesn't suggest that will change, though they did qualify for the Euros by beating Portugal in the playoffs. Montenegro's win over Bosnia & Herzegovina is something of a surprise. Montenegro lost all eight of their Euros qualifiers, while Bosnia finished 3rd in their qualifying group behind Denmark and Italy.

Belgium are the second-highest ranked team in the world never to have qualified for the World Cup (behind Iceland) so a draw against Poland will be something of a disappointment when they have the ever-present Norway in the group.

Good wins for all the home nations last night.
The new England manager thinks they should have won by a lot more!

Good wins for all the home nations last night. The new England manager thinks they should have won by a lot more! She's right. I watched the game and it could already have been 5-0 by the time England took the lead. Plenty of chances but not a lot of composure in front of goal. A team like the USA would've put 20 past North Macedonia last night.

In another group taking place in Uzbekistan, Jordan got off to a winning start thanks to a second half hat-trick from Maysa Jbarah, who plays her club football in the French fifth tier for Thonon Evian. Iran face Bangladesh on Wednesday before a likely decider against Jordan on Saturday.

Thailand are looking to reach their third World Cup in a row and got off to a perfect start against Malaysia, going 2-0 up inside two minutes. However, they only added two more goals after that, which could potentially be a factor, though they will be expected to beat group hosts Palestine.

Uzbekistan manage to beat Mongolia by the exact same score South Korea did, setting up a winner-takes-all showdown on Thursday. I haven't seen a definitive list of tie-breaking criteria but I would assume, with the teams having identical records, it would come down to disciplinary record in the case of a draw, though neither team has received a yellow card thus far. The main Asian Cup tournament, for which this is also a qualifier, allows for a penalty shoot-out in the group stage to break a tie between two teams playing each other in the deciding game so I would assume this is also a possibility here. Mongolia's defeat means they are the first team eliminated from the 2023 Women's World Cup who have actually played a match.

The top 3 all win again to create a six-point gap to the rest. England hit double figures (including three goals in stoppage time) against Luxembourg with Ellen White scoring twice to move just three behind Kelly Smith. Millie Bright also scored twice to record her first international goals. Northern Ireland enjoyed a second consecutive 4-0 win, though all four goals came in the second half against Latvia. Austria had another comfortable win, getting six against North Macedonia to add to the eight they got against Latvia last week. When the group resumes in month's time, England host Northern Ireland on the third matchday, before travelling to Latvia, with Northern Ireland having a crunch home game against Austria.
