Sam Fender is back and thankfully no major change of direction, its another Springstreen esque stomper. Is he the best solo artist in the UK right now. I say yes!! It gave me chills from the first few seconds and just got better!!! Sam describes the new album as like being the soundtrack to an 80s coming of age movie. I was already sold before he said that but now .

Sounds like a b side to me, or a continuation of one of his earlier songs The Borders, which isnt a bad thing I guess.

Sounds like The Borders part 2 to me too, which isn't a bad thing. It's my second favorite song by him and I really wasn't a fan of Winter Song or Hold Out so I was worried he was going down the minimalistic, stripped back route
All male solo artists go 1 of 3 ways after a few albums, they either think they are a 1 man Sigur Ros and start releasing really abstract arty music, stripped back and not very commercial, continue to release the same album over and over or get bored like Ed Sheeran and Jake Bugg and beef up their sound with synths and make a dance record, there's not much opportunity to experiment or evolve if your just 1 man with a guitar, I glad he opted for the least worst option although I'm thinking maybe his follow up album is going to be just his debut again but not as good

The difference with Sam Fender is his band are hugely important . You can take away the vocals and they are just brilliant musicians, in some ways I wish he was The Sam Fender Band as I think that would say more about them. You can’t say the same for many of his contemporaries which do sound more studio. He isn’t a solo artist in the absolute sense like Sheeran for example.
Many of our favourite artists have managed to make the switch between having a band and bring solo, such as Ryan Adams and not to mention Bruce Springsteen himself who is just a different level when he has the E Street Band.
Oh and I think those tracks from last year that we weren’t quite so keen on were songs he made without his band in lockdown. He actually admitted on the radio last week that he is not a big musician, you leaves that to the band, he sings, has ideas that they bring to live for him and he writes the songs

Chaps like Joe in his band really help to cement his sound. daz, Joe was part of Lisbon so I've had the pleasure of hanging out with him too!
