Depends which league you're talking about. 😁
We're starting our league season at home to Cleethorpes.

Stags beat Retford 9-1 in a pre season friendly and then lost 1-0 to Matlock, sums Mansfield up really! We do have 7 players self isolating though, so a lot of youngsters playing which is not ideal if they aren't up to it! Also two guys playing that Clough has transfer listed, shows how desperate we are for players to play the friendlies as he's said he doesn't want either at the club this season! (and one has been loaned to Walsall)

Yeah the 26th of December is on a Sunday this year so our game is on the 27th. We've also got games on August Bank Holiday, New Year's Day and Easter Monday.
Home draws in the cups too. Pickering Town in the FA Cup and Glossop North End in the FA Trophy.
Our preseason is underway. We were supposed to play Blyth Spartans last Saturday but it was called off the day before due to a positive Covid test so we had our first friendly on Wednesday, winning 5-0 at Guisborough Town, then today we beat West Auckland Town 6-0. Thornaby up next on Tuesday, then playing in a two-day tournament next weekend, facing Redcar Athletic on Saturday then either Guisborough or Redcar Town on Sunday.

The usual pre-season chaos has hit Newcastle United. Our first team goalie has contracted covid and so has to isolate for 10 days. Or reserve keeper has a foot injury and is currently out. 3 of our other 4 goalkeepers have had to isolate because they are in the same support bubble as our main goalkeeper...
Our first pre-season game was today. Needless to say the result wasn't going to be great...
York City 1 Newcastle 0
The embarrassment here is most of our first team were playing today. The intention had been to mix the first team squad and the under-23s to give a mix of experience and youth. However due to the covid outbreak the under-23s had to stick to a game against Harrogate. The under-23s goalkeeper was drafted in to the main squad though - and was given the Man Of The Match award by local paper The Chronicle. It says it all really...
The under-23s fared no better, they were beaten 2-1 by Harrogate.
My take is that early pre-season games matter little anyway. It's more about getting the players out there and getting them running around for 45 minutes. My main concern is the usual: we need some quality signings and a better manager. We aren't likely to get either.

I follow York and this is being classed as first game in new stadium... Great result following some years of misery at York.

York need to get back in the conference where they belong, and then hopefully back in the league, I want to do their ground, but will have to look into how to get there through train and bus maybe?

It's next to the new uni campus (the one I lived at in the first year it was constructed) i think. So train station to ground should be uni bus. Although Hull bus may be quicker if it goes that direction.

Reading 0-3 West Ham
A strange team (though I'm wondering if we had still had players isolating as our friendly last Friday was cancelled due to a few positive cases). A couple of triallists, a couple of youngsters, one of whom may have been credited as scoring an og in the first half, and no recognised striker (John Swift played up front in our usual 4-2-3-1 formation).
Then loads more youngsters came on 2nd half, some of whom I've never heard of, so can't say I'm surprised by the final score. I'm sure our team will be stronger by the start of the season, Liam Moore is with Jamaica at the Gold Cup atm for example, but doesn't change my feeling that its going to be a difficult season ahead unless we can bring in some experienced players even if our transfer embargo makes things harder. Just shows how thin our squad is currently.
Also, didn't see it but apparently the game was shown on West Ham website and on their social media.

Why would anyone in their right mind pay £8 to watch a friendly against a team that's in your division anyway?

I dont think Newport and Forest Green will go up automatically in div 2, and I think Northampton and Rochdale will be higher, unless they have financial issues? And if Swindon have sorted the takeover they should do well, if they haven't then yes they could go down, but I think Sutton and Hartlepool will struggle, the latter because they seem to have lost their better players and the former just because. But who knows Sutton could keep that upwards momentum and be challenging in the playoffs. I'd love us to make the playoffs, but I just dont see it. I'd rather be a pessimist and be wrong than an optimist and have that hope dashed!
