Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski also through in the doubles after saving a match point. Long for a doubles match including a match tiebreak, over 2hr. Won the match tiebreak 13-11. I think J Murray/Skupski were down a set and a break so they did very well to win that match.
Great win for A Murray / Salisbury too, I watched the 2nd set highlights and they were dominant throughout. I don't want to tempt fate just yet, as Andy's fitness with him playing singles in challenging conditions will be key I think.

VIRTUAL MEDAL TABLE PREDICTION:
Gold: Jade Jones
Silver: Bradly Sinden
Bronze: none
We have GB's first predicted medals of the Games, with Jade Jones projected to complete an Olympic hat-trick. She is seeded 1 and has a bye to the last 16. Bradly Sinden is predicted to win taekwondo silver and is seeded 2 in his weight class.
Elsewhere, Lizzy Deignan goes in the road race, having finished 5th in Rio and 2nd in London.
In the pool, Aimee Willmott goes in the 400m IM final, having qualified 2nd fastest. The race is due off at 3:12am UK time (the swimming finals are taking place in the morning in Japan to appease US broadcasters). That's followed by the women's 4x100m Freestyle relay, in which GB qualified 4th fastest in a new national record time. Max Litchfield scraped into the final of the men's 400 IM with the 8th quickest time, though the top 8 were separated by less than a second. Litchfield finished 4th in the event in Rio.
GB go in the women's team archery but if they beat Italy in the 1st round, they face top seeds South Korea in the quarter-finals.
Grace Reid and Katherine Torrance are in the Synchro 3m springboard diving. They finished 5th at the last World Championships.
Chelsie Giles goes for GB in judo and is seeded 7.
GB's women begin their defence of their hockey title with a group game against Germany.
Andy Murray begins his attempt to complete a hat-trick of singles tennis titles but has a tough 1st round match against Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime. Liam Broady faces Argentina's Francesco Cerundolo.

A shock 1st round defeat for Jade Jones during the night but Bradly Sinden is through to his final, guaranteeing GB at least a silver medal. Sinden is in with a good shout at the Gold since the favourite got dumped out early.
His second bout was weird - he won the first round something like 15 or 16-0 but then was routed in the second and at the beginning of the third the gap closed to just 1 point.
However the GB team appealed a decision which was then overturned and he then ran away with the match.
Just a pity Chelsie Giles had the misfortune to get drawn against the hot favourite in the quarter final.
Jades Jones' odds for SPOTY certainly will be changing.
Apparently the coach of the Refugee team was formerly with GB and Jones was out-foxed tactically when her opponent spent the match protecting her head.

Silver for Sinden after a back and forth final. He led with 16 seconds remaining but a late flurry from his Uzbek opponent proved decisive.

Djokovic and Medvedev has been critical to the organisers over the timing of when the matches are being played. Arguing they should be played in the evening, not mid afternoon. Djokovic has said playing in these conditions was one of the most challenging he's experienced. Could be an interesting one to monitor.
Outside of tennis, I watched the Helen Glover rowing in the early hours and can't say it was too surprising to see them finishing 3rd behind the Australian and Canadian pair. Apparently their only competition was at the European championships, which they won. So maybe a change of tactics?

I watched that Helen Glover documentary last week and they showed that European Championship race. They only just won and her initial reaction was she expected to have won by more because the Europeans aren't their main rivals. I feel that if she doesn't make the final her and GB Rowing will think her comeback wasn't worth it. Andy Murray pulled out of the singles just 2hrs before he was due to play with a quad strain injury. It backs up my view that playing both singles and doubles was too much. It would be different had he not won his doubles match and had a winnable singles match, but I'm not actually fussed that he withdrew. I was already starting to wonder how the singles match against Felix AA would affect him in the doubles. I wonder too if the heat was a factor. When he was due to play mid afternoon it was 31C. Hope the injury isn't too serious as watching the highlights show last night it seemed as though they feel that they can challenge for a medal. Liam Broady won 7-5 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 in a match that lasted over 3hr! Hadn't heard of his opponent before and he's ranked outside the top 100 but a good win. Next plays Hurkacz I think. The 2nd round singles and doubles are tomorrow.

Amazing win for Andy Murray and Joe Salisbury, 6-3 6-2 against the 2nd seeds Herbert and Mahut! Heather Watson's defeat was just awful, 7-6(7-5) 6-3 against Friedsam, who was one of the easiest draws she could have got. Only discovered this morning that the rowing started yesterday. Wasn't sure how Helen Glover would do, but a medal would have been amazing, if she went out in the heats then that would be a surprise as probably expected her to make the final. Just correcting this slightly. Friedsam was the easiest draw Heather Watson could have got as she was the last player to make the cut.

The 2nd round singles and doubles are tomorrow. Great win for Liam Broady - he looked physically spent towards the end but that's to be expected playing in 30C heat.
I too am not surprised about Murray withdrawing from the singles for the same reasons. From his performance in the doubles, I think this was his best chance of a medal especially with Joe Salisbury in top form and playing in the singles (regardless of the opponent) would affect his performance.
A day full of shocks - some other shocks in addition to Jade Jones losing in the first round - top seed Ash Barty losing in the first round in the (tennis) singles, the Tunisian teenager Ahmed Hafnaoui winning the 400m free from lane 8 and a relatively unknown Austrian rider winning the women's road race.

VIRTUAL MEDAL TABLE PREDICTION:
Gold: Adam Peaty, Amber Hill (withdrawn)
Silver: none
Bronze: Tom Daley & Matty Lee
Day 3 is already underway with the men's triathlon. Jonny Brownlee is chasing a third Olympic medal after winning bronze in London and silver and Rio. He's joined by Alex Yee is the quickest runner in the field and has a great chance if he's in contention after the bike section.
Adam Peaty should become GB's first gold medallist of the Games as he's continued to look dominant in the 100m Breaststroke. James Wilby joins him in the final. Sadly that's the only swimming final on day 3 with British interest as the men failed to qualify in the 4x100m Freestyle relay by 4/100ths of a second.
GB qualified 5th for the men's team gymnastics final and will hope to go one better than the 4th place they achieved in Rio.
The canoe slalom events are among the most exciting in the Games. The semi-finals and final of the C1 event take place on Day 3 with Adam Burgess qualifying in 3rd place.
Under-23 world champion Tom Pidcock goes in the mountain bike cross country race.
Tom Daley has a new synchro diving partner once again. He won bronze in Rio with Dan Goodfellow. Goodfellow has switched to the springboard to partner Jack Lauger so Matty Lee joins Daley on the 10m platform.
The men's team competition in the archery take place, with GB facing Indonesia in the last 16.
Both the men's and women's hockey teams are in action. The men face Canada, the women are up against South Africa.
The men's rugby sevens gets underway with GB facing Canada and Japan in their opening pool matches.
Liam Pitchford and Paul Drinkhall are both in the last 32 of the table tennis singles. Pitchford qualified automatically as one of the top 16 seeds but Drinkhall has won two matches to reach this stage, one of which was against the no.17 seeded Austrian.
