I have various playlists on my spotify account, I decided on decades when transferring my music over from itunes. My 60s list only has 43 songs on it, and I'm sure I'm missing some gems, so please suggest some well known classics as well as hidden gems, and I'll give them a listen and add them or not Thank you for your musical expertise and knowledge.

Well seeing what is on BBC2 tonight in less than an hour... Here is the hit collaboration between Irish musician Patrick Campbell-Lyons and Greek composer Alex Spyropoulos taken from their second album The Existence Of Chance Is Everything and Nothing While the Greatest Achievement Is the Living of Life and So Say All Of Us, 1968:

Well there's all those Beatles songs, Rolling Stones, Kinks, The Who, Manfred Mann, The Tremeloes, The Animals..
And don't forget Bob Dylan, various Motown artists like The Miracles, Supremes, Martha & the Vandellas as well as Marvin Gaye (often as part of duets) and early Stevie Wonder.
From the early years there's Elvis Presley of course and Cliff Richard - you would know you were his mentor in Haven Factor. Also the Shadows without Cliff made some great instrumentals. Also pre-Beatles there was doo-wop Rock & Roll as well as artists like Chubby Checker and some gems from Joe Meek including "Johnny Remember Me".
You can look at the UK charts, at my retro charts, at the combi retro charts (albeit that's only the last 3 years of the 60s), the US billboard charts...
My big playlist has over 6000 songs on it, of which I think there are at least 750 from the 1960s.
At the end of it all, this is the song I reckon as my #1 of that decade

I have Spotify playlists by each year when I did my Retro Rewind Charts a few years back. I then compiled them into a Top 100 / Top 125* playlist for each year. The thing about the 1960s is there are an awful lot of UK hits which were covers of US R&B or country tracks: One such example is this 1963 release which peaked at USA #43 (R&B #2) early in 1964 ....
which was within a year a UK #1 hit cover by the Denny Laine led Moody Blues:

Earl Purple has come up with some fantastic suggestions. My 60 birthday number ones thread from last year includes some great ideas from a decade of Septembers. I would add obvious ones such as A Whiter Shade Of Pale and Eve Of Destruction as well as quirky instrumentals such as Nut Rocker and Telstar. Richard Harris's gloriously OTT MacArthur Park has to be included, as well as the Righteous Brothers' definitive version of Unchained Melody. Twenty-five years before Britpop, we had this under-appreciated classic.

Thanks everyone, I'll have a listen tomorrow, I only just noticed that spotify does that useful listen to these based on the playlist thing, so I added in another 20 songs by doing that (after checking if they were indeed 1960s), a few were suggested that I dont know but like. And a few suggested here I know I dont like, but thanks all the same. Nice to know my listening is sorted for tomorrow, and I know Earl P, I could look at the charts, but I thought I'd see what my Haven Friends would suggest as they have good musical tastes (generally)

Here is a list of Simon and Garfunkel's 1960s hits.
Homeward Bound I Am A Rock Mrs Robinson The Boxer
They also had the Mrs Robinson EP which included Scarborough Fair and The Sound Of Silence. That's hard to beat.
Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit (that has absolutely nothing to do with drugs) also has to be added to the mix.

I'd suggest though that we consider Phil Spector's many productions of the decade, including of course "River Deep Mountain High" and the aforementioned Righteous Brothers but with "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling".

You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling is just as brilliant as Unchained Melody. The work of Dusty Springfield should also be added to the list.

Crikey, where to start? Has anyone mentioned Nina Simone? Many of her best songs are from the 60s I think, although I’m not sure precisely which. Also The Velvet Underground And Nico is an incredible album, if you’re after individual tracks I’m Waiting For The Man and Sunday Morning are glorious, and Heroin is totally mad and will seriously challenge your perception of what 60s music was like.
The Beach Boys were brilliant too, just search their singles on the OCC website I guess, I’ll never tire of hearing Sloop John B. For some real mainstream American chart stuff check out the Dirty Dancing soundtrack too, stuff like Be My Baby by the Ronettes, Stay by Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs, Big Girls Don’t Cry by Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, wonderful because they’re such glorious productions but very accessible too.

I have a playlist called BNERadio swinging 60s, it mostly concentrated on the latter half of the 60s, the psychedelic stuff especially but I have never got round to quality controlling it may have that odd 1970 song as well but it is pretty all encompassing

A long, long time ago I made my came up with a Top 5 for every year. If I did it again today, it would change a little, but not a huge amount. Here are the 1950s and 1960s lists. I would say the 50 tracks from the 1960s are essentials for any collection, although I'm sure you have many of them already.

There are so many absolute classics from the 60s that I don't know where I'd start. I'd say you're probably got enough to be getting on with for now though
I've often thought we should start a Hall of Fame song list for each decade, like we do with artists, but I'm not sure how we'd go about doing it.
