I have an idea for a future contest. It's called Haven World Cup. The structure would be the same as a 16 or 24 team football tournament (32 participants is highly unlikely). Participants would be drawn into groups of 4 and would have head to head matches against each other, with 3 points being awarded to the winner. Participants would pick a different song for each match so a minimum of 3 songs would be required. The top 2 in each group would go through to the quarter-finals (using a 16-participant contest as an example) where they would choose another song and so on for the semis and final.
For each set of matches, you would be voting on all 16 songs and scoring accordingly. Each song's score would be used to determine the outcome of their participants' matches. Who chooses which song wouldn't be revealed until the scores are announced for each round, and we wouldn't know which songs were going head-to-head in each match, apart from the final.
So for example: The first set of matches in Group A sees Smurfie taking on Shireblogger and Roo facing greendemon. Smurfie's song does very well, finishing top of the leaderboard with 245 points while Shireblogger's finishes 6th with 180 points. That's a win for Smurfie and 3 points. Meanwhile, greendemon's song is 9th with 146 points but Roo's can only finish 13th with 102. So even though greendemon was below Shireblogger and Smurfie, because her match was against Roo, she takes the win and the 3 points. In the event of a tie in the table after 3 matches, total points given to their songs would be used as a tie-breaker.
Assuming one week per round of matches, the whole contest could be done and dusted in 6-7 weeks, with participants needing to pick a maximum of 6 songs based on a 16-player field.
I hope all this makes sense. Any questions, please ask. Any suggestions, please add them below.

I like this concept, it might be a good idea to run it when the actual Football World Cup starts towards the end of the year.
An alternative might be to play a Round Robin League Format. Whilst it would obviously last much longer, you are not restricted by the number of players. Hence if 19 want to play, then there would be 18 games across 19 weeks (with one player having a rest week). But maybe have it that they "manage" a Year in Music, and are only allowed to use a maximum of one song per artist.

So a different song AND a different artist each round, or a different song AND same artist? Sorry I’m not very good at reading rules.
Sounds interesting….
Do we get to name our Haven World Cup team name - eg Smurfletown United? And team flag!.

I haven't really thought about the rules around the songs themselves but I'm thinking a free choice for each match. I think same artists would make it too similar to Haven Factor.

ooh, could we pick a few artists then? A bit like picking your own fantasy football team?

ooh, could we pick a few artists then? A bit like picking your own fantasy football team? Pretty much, yes. Just a free choice of songs for the entire tournament - no set theme in terms of years, decades, genres or anything. Just whatever you want. Of course, it might be a bit boring (or it might not) if everyone is picking massive no.1 hits but the rules can always be reviewed for future editions.

Looking at the calendar, I'm thinking the start of June would be a good time to have it if people are interested in it taking place and it should be finished in time for Rock Idol beginning.

I think that contest was fine as a one-time thing but I'm not sure there are enough decent options left to make it viable to do a second time around.

I think doing the same format as the days of the week one, but for months, could be fun. But not an actual contest.

I'm not sure I could think of a song for every month though. January and December would be easy, but I'm struggling to think of one for March .

We could extend it to songs that mention various months in the lyrics. I can think of a song with March (in the sense of the month) in the name though, April is harder...
