38 Marty Wilde - Abergavenny AUS #8
The late 1950s UK teen heart throb scored his last UK hit single in 1962, had reinvented himself as a rather good songwriter co-wrote hit singles for others including the Casuals' "Jesamine", Lulu's "I'm A Tiger" and Status Quo's "Ice in the Sun". However, he recorded this single with his co-writer Ronnie Scott and whilst it flopped in the UK (which is a real pity as it is incredibly catchy, despite Radio 2 playing it a lot), it was a modest hit in the USA #47; and a big hit in Australia #8, & the Netherlands #6.

34 Madeline Bell - I'm Gonna Make You Love Me USA #26
The New Jersey born, UK based backing singer for Dusty Springfield, (and future female vocalist of Blue Mink) cover of the Dee Dee Warwick minor US hit. Despite being produced by Dusty Springfield, who also sang backing vocals alongside Lesley Duncan this failed to chart in the UK. Of course the Supremes/Temptations duet version had no such problems a few months later.

31 David Bowie - In the Heat of the Morning DNC
The London aspiring pop star's final single on Deram records (you might know this via The Last Shadow Puppets cover) was surely his finest of that pre-hit career. Originally released in December 1967, the chord progressions so shifting & melodic (sounds like they inspired Blur's For Tomorrow"), not to mention a beautiful string arrangement by Tony Visconti. The first time he worked with David Bowie, but my goodness me certainly not the last.
The failure of the debut album titled: David Bowie and its singles, as well as not being able to produce anything with his subsequent material felt worthy of release, resulted in Bowie's departure from Deram in May 1968. It would be 18 months before he next released a single which was significantly more successful so being the true beginning of the Pop/Rock icon.

45 The Cowsills - The Rain, The Park, and Other Things USA #2
The family singing group from Newport, Rhode Island, six siblings noted for performing professionally and singing harmonies at an early age, later with their mother.
And the inspiration for the Partridge Family. By the time that was being made for telly though they were considered too old for the roles. Drummer Barry was a victim of Hurricane Katrina.
It did top one of the US charts - and their other Billboard no. 2 topped two of them...

04 Lulu - To Sir With Love USA #1
The much covered theme from James Clavell's 1967 film To Sir, with Love.
Based on the memoir by E. R. Brathwaite, albeit transplanted from post-war Britain to the swinging 60s, and with the entire dating-a-Jewish-girl plot excised.
The film was a labour of love for Sydney Poitier, who took a risk in accepting a low fee - by this time he was an Oscar winner and was in two of the biggest films of the year - but a percentage of the box office, given the studios had no faith in it making money. Within a year the film made him a multi-millionaire.
