BRKN LOVE - Black BoxRelease Date: November 4, 2022Toronto-based alt-rock band BRKN LOVE released this album in November and I've been looking forward to review this one because the singles sound like a full at rock band version of Royal Blood. Their frontman says, “We couldn’t be more excited to announce the release of our new LP Black Box. This album is the next evolution of BRKN LOVE. Imagine everything you loved about our band and then turn it up to 11. It’s truly a milestone record for us. After the release of our first record and all the complications that came along with it (namely the pandemic), we really wanted to a chance to redeem ourselves. This is our redemption record. We’re back at full force and we’re not pulling any punches this time. 1. Little Black Box 9 2. Dead Weight 8.5 3. Like A Drug 10 4. Under The Knife 8.5 5. Rubber Room 8 6. Animal 7.5 7. Bad Blood 8.5 8. One In The Same 8 9. Forever's Enough 8 10. Fever Dream 7 11. Spell 9 SummaryHard-hitting, straight-up rock, this will be the shortest summary I have done, if you like Royal Blood you will love this, it is no frills rock, slightly bluesy at times, other songs get a bit funky and have a nice groove. They have just toured with Badflower and Dinosaur Pile-Up, so if you like them your in for a treat. Black Box is a rarity in that there are no bad tracks here, only good times for everyone 8.36/10

PALAYE ROYALE - Fever Dream
Release Date: October 28, 2022Palaye Royale is a Canadian-American rock band from Las Vegas, formed in 2008 by brothers Remington Leith, Sebastian Danzig, and Emerson Barrett. The brothers' surname was Kropp; each one's stage moniker makes use of their respective middle names. They formed under the name Kropp Circle in 2008 and changed their name to Palaye Royale in 2011. These guys certainly have more than a hint of emo about them, each member of Palaye Royale doubles as musician and visionary. The Pirate, The Vampire, and The Gentleman inspire a level of devotion reserved for My Chemical Romance or Twenty One Pilots. 1. Eternal Life (Intro) N/A 2. Eternal Life 8 3. No Love in LA 10 4. Punching Bag 8 5. Broken 8 6. Fever Dream 8.5 7. Line It Up (Deep End) Ft. LP 8.5 8. Toxic In You 8 9. Wasted Sorrow 7.5 10. Paranoid 9 11. Oblivion 7.5 12. Lifeless Stars 9 13. King of the Damned 7 14. Off With The Head 8.5 15. Off With The Head (Outro) N/ASummaryThis is Palaye Royale's fourth studio album and they have been growing into their sound more and more in recent albums, they mix glam rock with emo so touch on dark subjects, it's hard to write about them without comparing them to My Chemical Romance both in sound and aesthetics, "Fever Dream" could even be a MCR song, they are certainly children of the MCR years but doing it their way which is according to the band partly inspired by The Libertines. I'd probably file their sound with Badflower, YUNGBLUD and Måneskin 8.26/10

BEABADOOBEE - Beatopia
Release Date: July 15, 2022Beatopia is the second studio album by Filipino-British singer and songwriter Beabadoobee and features collaborations with singer PinkPantheress, Matty Healy and George Daniel of the 1975, Cavetown, and Jack Steadman of Bombay Bicycle Club. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalised rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album has an average score of 78, based on 16 reviews, indicating "generally favourable reviews". Peaking at #4 in the UK album chart 1. Beatopia Cultsong N/A 2. 10:36 8 3. Sunny Day 7 4. See You Soon 7.5 5. Ripples 6 6. The Perfect Pair 9 7. Broken CD 5 8. Talk 9 9. Lovesong 7.5 10. Pictures of Us 6.5 11. Fairy Song 7.5 12. Don't Get the Deal 7.5 13. Tinkerbell Is Overrated (featuring PinkPantheress) 6.5 14. You're Here That's the Thing 8SummaryOk, I'm not counting track 1 as a song, maybe it is? I will count it as an intro though, I have always found Beabadoobee hit and miss but I thought her debut album and last couple of EP’s were decent enough to give this one a spin. Generic lyrics and a few tracks that weren't to my taste aside this is a solid indie pop record without being great, "The Perfect Pair", "Talk" and "10:36" will definitely make my songs from 2022 playlist but there are a few too many filler tracks for me to score big here 7.30/10

PANIC AT THE DISCO! - Viva Las Vengeance
Release Date: August 19, 2022Viva Las Vengeance is the seventh and final studio album by American pop rock solo project Panic! at the Disco. It is Brendon Urie's first studio album in 4 years since their 2018 album "Pray for the Wicked", and the last album prior to the project's disbandment. With Urie as the sole constant member of the band, it is unclear what the distinction between Panic and his future projects will be, but apparently he felt the name is no longer representative and, at the age of 35, decided it’s time to move on from it. 1. Viva Las Vengeance 8.5 2. Middle of a Breakup 8 3. Don't Let the Light Go Out 8.5 4. Local God 7 5. Star Spangled Banger 7.5 6. God Killed Rock and Roll 7.5 7. Say It Louder 8 8. Sugar Soaker 8 9. Something About Maggie 7.5 10. Sad Clown 8 11. All by Yourself 6.5 12. Do It to Death 8SummaryWe come to the end of a fun ride with a album that is a throwback to the '70s and '80s, I knew going into this a few of the songs were noted for their similarities to Queen which is never a bad thing and "Star Spangled Banger" couldn't be anymore Thin Lizzy. Not their best album sure, it lacks any hits for me but there is enough here to peak my interest, singles "Viva Las Vengeance", "Middle of a Breakup" and "Don't Let the Light Go Out" were a solid start to the album but that is the high point, some very nice album tracks though which isn't usually synonymous with PATD albums but we have a very good middle section and a fitting album closer in "Do It to Death" 7.75/10

DEAF HAVANA - The Present Is A Foreign Land
Release Date: July 15, 2022"The Present Is A Foreign Land" the sixth studio album from rock outfit Deaf Havana, very nearly didn’t happen, the band released a statement that they intended to break up in early 2020, instead brothers James and Matthew will continue on as a duo, with Lee Wilson and Tom Ogden leaving the band and thankfully they did 1. Pocari Sweat N/A 2. 19Dreams 7.5 3. I Put You Through Hell 8 4. Nevermind 9 5. On The Wire 9 6. Trying / Falling 7.5 7. Someone / Somewhere 7 8. Help 7.5 9. The Present Is A Foreign Land 8 10. Kids 7.5 11. Going Clear 9 12. Remember Me 7SummaryJust a quick one today so I can get through my final few albums of 2022, this is the sixth album from the Norfolk based band and the first as a duo but imo they haven't lost their sound, in fact they sound better than ever on the Ed Sheeran sounding "Nevermind" and singles "On The Wire", "Going Clear", the rest is pretty standard alt rock but on the good side 7.95/10

STARCRAWLER - She Said
Release Date: September 16, 2022Starcrawler is an American rock band from Los Angeles, formed in 2015. The band consists of lead singer Arrow de Wilde, guitarist Henri Cash, bassist Tim Franco and drummer Seth Carolina, pedal steel/guitar player Bill Cash. They have released three studio albums: Starcrawler (2018), Devour You (2019) and She Said (2022). In a performance review in The Guardian the band was described as "Blending the sludgy, doom-laden riffs of Black Sabbath with the urgent pop-punk of The Runaways, the young LA band Starcrawler are a group whose entire DNA seems linked to the 1970s." 1. Roadkill 7.5 2. She Said 7.5 3. Stranded 7.5 4. Thursday 8.5 5. Broken Angels 9 6. Jetblack 8 7. True 8 8. Midnight 7 9. Runaway 7.5 10. Better Place 7SummaryNostalgic, friendly and accessible, Starcrawler have really nailed their sound over their three album, Starcrawler (2018), Devour You (2019) and She Said (2022). There are for sure similarities to bands from the 90s like Garbage and Hole, you know the ones that merge pop with a dirtier more grungy sound. As an album I think it is their most consistent yet but in terms of stand out songs i think its hard to beat their debut album, in fact it is the album track "Thursday" that is one of my favourite tracks on this record along with single "Broken Angels". Taken as a whole, this is a perfectly enjoyable album but the trajectory they were on, I expected a bit more 7.75/10

EDITORS - EBM
Release Date: September 23, 2022Editors are an English rock band, formed in 2002 in Birmingham. Previously known as Pilot, The Pride and Snowfield, the band currently consists of Tom Smith (lead vocals, guitar, piano), Russell Leetch (bass guitar, synthesiser, backing vocals), Ed Lay (drums, percussion, backing vocals), Justin Lockey (lead guitar), Elliott Williams (keys, synthesizers, guitars, and backing vocals), and Benjamin John Power (composer and producer). Editors have so far released two platinum studio albums, and seven in total, with several million combined sales. Their debut album The Back Room was released in 2005. It contained the hits "Munich" and "Blood" and the following year received a Mercury Prize nomination. Their follow-up album An End Has a Start went to number 1 in the UK Album Chart in June 2007 and earned the band a Brit Awards nomination for best British Band. It also spawned another Top 10 hit single, "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors". The band's third album, In This Light and on This Evening, was released in October 2009 and went straight to number 1 in the UK Album Chart. The band released their fourth studio album, The Weight of Your Love, in July 2013, followed by self-produced In Dream in October 2015. In 2018, the band released their sixth album Violence. Their seventh album, EBM, was released in September 2022. Alongside their critical acclaim and strong success in the UK Singles Chart, they consistently enjoyed sold-out tours and numerous headlining festival slots. Their brand of dark indie rock is commonly compared to the sound of bands such as Echo & the Bunnymen, Joy Division, Interpol, The Chameleons and U2. 1. Heart Attack 8 2. Picturesque 8 3. Karma Climb 9 4. Kiss 7.5 5. Silence 7 6. Strawberry Lemonade 7.5 7. Vibe 9.5 8. Educate 8.5 9. Strange Intimacy 7.5Summary
From what I understand Electronic Body Movement (EBM) is a genre of electronic music in the early 90's in Germany, and Editors had already dabbled with synthpop, most noticeably on their third and fourth albums which produced two of my favourite Editors songs, "Papillon" and "A Ton of Love". No, they weren't joking with the EBM title, once again they chose a more synthpop direction but this time they're more adventurous and throw themselves into the sound entirely, this time I think they were aiming for a more old-school industrial sound from the late 80s or early 90s. The singles were a bit hit and miss "Karma Climb" and "Vibe" did great in my chart and remain my two highlights from this album 8.05/10

I'll be honest, I really struggled with the singles from Editors last year to the point I never got around to the album. Just couldn't get on with Tom's vocals

Yeah i can see why, i'm seeing them later this year with James, Maximo Park, Pigeon Detectives and a few other bands and I'm really looking forward to seeing Editors live but yeah i hope they don't go too electro and miss out their brilliant guitar based tracks from their earlier days

THE 1975 - Being Funny In A Foreign Language
Release Date: October 14, 2022Being Funny in a Foreign Language is the fifth studio album by English band The 1975. The album was recorded primarily at Real World Studios in Wiltshire. The band released the lead single "Part of the Band" on 7 July 2022, which was followed by the subsequent singles "Happiness", "I'm in Love with You" and "All I Need to Hear". Being Funny In A Foreign Language received acclaim from critics, with many reviewers naming it some of the band’s strongest work. The album debuted atop the UK Albums Chart as well as reaching number one in Scotland, Ireland and Australia. It also reached the top 5 on the US Billboard 200, as well as top 10 in New Zealand, Japan, Canada and the Netherlands. The album was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2023 Brit Awards. 1. The 1975 7 2. Happiness 9 3. Looking for Somebody (To Love) 8.5 4. Part of the Band 7 5. Oh Caroline 8 6. I'm in Love with You 9.5 7. All I Need to Hear 7 8. Wintering 8.5 9. Human Too 7 10. About You 8.5 11. When We Are Together 8SummaryMuch more consistent album from The 1975, at times "Being Funny In A Foreign Language" could be mistaken for a Vampire Weekend album, which isn't a bad thing, I think I much prefer the more jolly, jangly guitar 1975 with orchestral arrangements. I'm usually not a huge fan of 1975 album tracks but "Looking for Somebody (To Love)", "About You" and "Wintering" are definitely getting added to my playlist and "When We Are Together" is a very nice closing track along with a couple of very good singles so this one is a win for me 8.00/10
