To the actual subject matter in question. My thoughts seeing as I haven't expressed them:
Will Smith should have bit his tongue, said nothing and waited till he got up to accept his award (for which he was 1/5 odds on to win, so virtually nailed on). When he got up he could have given an impassioned 5 minute speech about his wife and her condition, explaining how hard it has been for the two of them and how much he loves her. He could have pointed out how cruel the joke was and how much it hurt and upset him. The entire room would likely have stood up and applauded and Chris Rock would have been made to look like a complete a*sehole.
Having said that there's obviously something not right about Mr Smith, I'd feel sorry for him if he wasn't a self entitled multi millionaire cry baby. For an eloquent man that's more than adept at rapping he could have made mincemeat out of Chris Rock without laying a finger on him. Instead he acted like a spoiled 6 year old, terrible optics all round.
I feel most sorry for Quest Love whose award came next but was ignored because everyone was talking about what had happened before.
As to the actual awards. I've seen West Side Story (stick to the 1960 original); Licorice Pizza (I love Paul Thomas Anderson work, but this was not his finest. That remains Magnolia); Belfast (a great screenplay, but it lacks something as a film); CODA (a worthy film, but as a film it is really not that good); and The Power of the Dog (the only film shortlisted which I thought was Best Film Oscar worthy).
So it seems like a weak year for films.
Lastly a joke:
Q: What did the police find when they dusted Chris Rock’s face?
A: The Flesh Prints from (a) Bell-end.

The Power Of The Dog is one I haven't yet seen. I haven't seen CODA either, but have seen all of those in raliverpool's list above. West Side Story was well choreographed, and was fun to watch.

US actor Will Smith has resigned from the Oscars Academy after slapping comedian Chris Rock on stage during last Sunday's ceremony.
"I am resigning from membership in the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences," he said in a statement.
Smith said he was "heartbroken" and would "accept any further consequences the Board deems appropriate".
"My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable," he said.
"The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home."
He went on: "I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived other nominees and winners of their opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken."
Smith slapped the comedian after he made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved head, a result of the hair-loss condition alopecia.
The actor said he wanted to "put the focus back on those who deserve attention for their achievements".
He concluded that "change takes time and I am committed to doing the work to ensure that I never again allow violence to overtake reason".

Right thing to do in the circumstances.
I can't agree with anyone saying he should have waited until his winner's speech though, as whatever the odds were, he couldn't have known he was going to win. His options were to either do nothing at all (and maybe hope to win) or heckle/call out Chris Rock there and then. The slapping could have only been more bizarre had he done it with a glove and them arranged to duel after the show.
