I'm not sure if this shocks you, that Dire Straits replaces Ultravox after just one week. Both of these songs represent for me the pinnacle of the careers of these two bands who will go on to greatness in the next few years but neither of them match for me the song they have out now, and neither will top my chart again although Dire Straits will get to #2. Of course neither had a UK #1 single either, with Ultravox reaching #2 with this song and Dire Straits a couple of times later on, but Dire Straits sold more albums and had the biggest selling album of the decade, and Midge Ure would get a solo #1 single (as well as co-writing the big hit I'm going to mention).
And as on this week we see the Boomtown Rats entering with Elephant's Graveyard (Guilty) which failed to reach the UK top 20 and sort-of marks the end for them - the post-punk era coming to an end whilst the new romantics are starting, but of course Bob Geldof and Midge Ure will work together to write that Band Aid song.
Nearing the end also for Blondie, until their comeback - Rapture was their last top 10 hit other than "Maria". Neil Diamond also pretty much finished, I was actually surprised to see this one didn't get into the UK top 40. But then of course a song he wrote will become a massive hit in a cover version in 1983. And 1983 will also bring a big hit for Slade - they're not done yet.
Of the new entries, Teardrop Explodes' classic enters just above Rainbow's biggest UK hit (and last top 10 hit). A memorable hit for the Passions, and Fred Wedlock singing about himself perhaps, a decade of releasing albums without any chart success, he's 38 at the time of this hit, the kind of age where you may still feel young - close to mid-life crisis. I know
TheThorne hates it though.
Rock N Roll revivalism isn't dead yet, (Do) The Hucklebuck reached NM #8 for Chubby Checker in 1960, the first rock n roll version, but it was based on a slow jazz tune by Paul Williams from 1949.
