I don't want to start a new thread or anything but does anyone fancy me setting up an Invitational Premier League Fantasy Football League for Haveners to participate in? A bit last minute (the deadline is in 2 hours!), but I've started a league here: fantasy.premierleague.com/leagues/auto-join/5kehceraliverpoolPandaHappily, if you've created a team, but join the league after the GW1 deadline, then you will still have your full score credited

Why are the referees so bad? Dereham ref yesterday was pathetic and Chelsea spurs ref missed an obvious foul

Because they are human, and if we didn't have refs, we wouldn't have football games to talk about, do you want var for every challenge? And at Dereham level, I know that refs have been assaulted and verbally abused, and if enough refs dont come through in the future, then there wont be football games. I've always wondered why more ex players dont give it a try, perfectly happy to dish it out on the pitch and in the studio to refs, but not prepared to go through the training and see if they can improve the situation?

Yes human but if I got my job so wrong I'd be sacked. The training needs to improve so standards are improved. Dereham was refereed almost to a racial standard as every time one of the 2 non white players got near the ball the ref gave a free kick the other way. 1 of them on the ground for 3 minutes and ref only stopped when the crowd, both benches and assistant ref shouted at him. I'm fully aware they can get awful scenarios but the good refs get applauded, even if the team lose. The respect of a good ref is there and unfortunately there seems to be little consequence for poor refereeing. They are paid at the end of the day. Even non league refs.

Oh and yes var could be brought in for more instances then it is. Rugby has it spot on. TV ref can bring it back for anything he feels needs looking at and it works well.

VAR for everything would ruin football. They cant even decide what is offside at the moment, so who decides what a "foul" is? Contact is not a foul, it's not netball! Yes non league refs are paid, £50 for all the abuse that comes with it. Good idea, if they make mistakes to sack them, then one weekend there just wont be any refs to ref the games, and then you'll still blame them for it. So you're saying this ref was racist as well? I remember a young lad reffing my son's U14 game, and our manager was berating him like he was an adult, these are the future refs and they're getting grief at junior level. What about Respect for refs as well that the FA brought in, how's that going in the higher leagues?

I never said this guy got abused on Saturday. And he shouldn't get sacked but a refresher course. The problem is there's no public perception that the refs will get spoken too if they've had a bad game. It's a shame they can't be rated like the players are. And constructive criticism added. If you get paid then do the job well. Take pride in your performance. Var doesn't need to stop play for everything. Like in rugby the TV ref looks at lots of things and only goes back to things he feels need looking at. Can do that in football. The yellow card for instance would just be delayed. I'd rather talk about the football then the refs at the end of a game. I take it you think hair pulling in the Chelsea spurs game is fine too.

Not seen it, but of course it isn't acceptable, where have I said that I think things are acceptable like that in football? If that happened then your magical VAR would spot it and tell the ref surely? Refs quite often have an assesser in the crowds at a higher level, no idea on the lower leagues, but you're telling me that managers dont feed back information about the refs to their FAs? Why does there need to be a public perception of refs being told off, why cant it happen behind closed doors? And to be fair, I expect they get ripped to shreds in the media in the top leagues, as you have "pundits" going over their every mistake on MOTD and suchlike. I never understand why players still surround refs contesting every decision, have they forgotten about VAR in their tiny brains, or is it just inate in some of them to be bullies?

Non-league referees get assessed too and those games tend to be worse to watch as the refs feel pressured to give everything by the letter of the law, rather than using their own judgement to let the game flow. I've seen some terrible refereeing performances over the years but then I've seen the same referee be excellent a few weeks later. As Andy says, without them, there's no game. They only get to see an incident once and from one angle so it's very easy for them to get things wrong.

I saw the incident that led to the first Spurs goal - a tackle where he may have got a touch on the ball but also got the player, and the ref deemed it not a foul, and there would have been no VAR except that from the break Spurs eventually scored - not immediately, there was quite a bit of play and some attempted clearances, but at the end of that attack.
In addition there was a player standing in an offside position that may have been in the view of the goalkeeper.
The second equaliser had a foul not in the corner itself but in the corner prior to it.
There's a limit as to how far they can take the game back, thus if a referee gives a corner that should have been a goal-kick or free kick to the defending team because of a foul, and the attacking team score from the corner, the goal still stands as the rules are now.

Yeah having watched both sunday games, to me VAR got it wrong in the London game and spot on in the Forest game, they let the ref look at some decisions and make his mind up. In the foul leading to the goal, and the hair pull, they decided to not let him have another look. The foul the linesman did nothing, but nowadays they dont unless told what to do by the ref, and the hairpull he may have missed as he was watching the flight of the ball. Anyway, it gave us two great games of football.

Marske United top of the Northern Premier League tonight after taking 7 points from their first 3 games at Step 3, including a 4-2 win at Radcliffe today. Highly unlikely they'll stay there but it's an incredible achievement to be competing at this level given the size of the club.

Spurs and Leeds have played against the same 3 teams and have the same record.

Thoroughly enjoyed Bristol City beating Cardiff, and Man United beating Liverpool last night! I wonder what the odds were on Leeds beating Chelsea, Man City not winning and Man U beating Liverpool as an accumulator.

Liverpool are not guaranteed a top 4 finish, which could be Arsenal, Man City, Spurs and Newcastle on what we've seen so far. Probably Man City will win the league, any of the other 3 could finish above Liverpool. I know Leeds are also on 7 points and they'll be totally safe this season but I can't see them breaking the top 4. (Nor Brighton)
